Big thanks to Brian Holmes for the amazing custom soundtrack. Huge thanks and love to my 5 yr. old daughter Bella for her uber-cute voice acting.

Speed run scoreboards only work for play-throughs done in one shot, ie: don't close the browser and come back later, you won't get into the scoreboards!

I started this project in June 2008, and have slowly whittled away at it for almost 2 years. It started as "what if the gameplay of Castle Crashing the Beard had more of a story." It also stands as a tribute to my favorite RPG Zelda II (see if you can find all the Zelda II references).

Cute game! Short and simple too, but I have 2 major complaints and 2 minor complaints.

The way the level up system works, it assumes that when you skip a level, you are skipping the highest skill you can afford, rather than the lowest skill you can afford. So if say, I skipped Magic and I got enough for both Attack & Armor, but I forgot to upgrade armor, I'd have to farm up all the way until I have enough for Attack before I can upgrade armor again. This proved to be really annoying before I figured out this out, and this whole thing wouldn't be an issue if you could simply open up the level up menu manually.

Magic is useless. It takes a tonne of mana to use any of the spells, and then after that you have to grind monsters for potions and risk either tiring your attack finger or dying too quickly because you didn't invest as much in the other 2 upgrades. The more useful ones are only accessible late into the already short game. Last but not least, you can only get that 1 Speed Runner medal if you played through the game without using spells or meeting any of the NPCs... bad for completionists, and as short as this game is, it isn't worth replaying multiple times and half of the playtime is easily devoted to grinding.

Minor complaint for the 3 guardians, mostly the Red Knight: the first time I fought him, I kept accidentally leaving the screen while trying to lure the knight. Furthermore, the instant you fight the Red Knight, he throws his hammer at you; you'd definitely take the unfair hit if you weren't holding the direction key to move right because you were thinking the game would give you a bit of time to adjust to the change in scene.

Another minor complaint is the enemies in the final dungeon. The first time I played, I never realized that enemies would spawn behind me, and I especially tend to forget that when in the final dungeon. Woe to me; if I left without clearing everyone, I'd have wasted a LOT of XP because the final dungeon enemies will never respawn. I even suspect that the enemies will just disappear if you didn't fight. That's pretty silly to be honest, the only reason it is a minor complaint is because I realized you could farm the final boss to get the Grinder achievement quickly.

Tips for players:
* Do NOT visit any of the NPCs until you've beaten the game once. This is stop you from accidentally getting locked out of the Speed Runner medal.
* Level up only Attack & Armor evenly. If you want to level up armor instead of attack, remember to spend the XP on armor first BEFORE you click "wait for next level".
* Level 4 attack is a breakpoint where you can easily kill off the forest small fry in 1 hit.
* To get the Grinder achievement, just keep killing the final boss for fast & easy XP. The credits screens are long and unskippable, but the game saves your XP before going to that screen, so you can just close and re-open the game at the credits.
I'll leave it to you to find out how to beat the 3 guardians and how to get all the NPCs.

I see this game has a sequel, I might check it out. I hope the criticisms I have for this game do not carry over to it!

How do you get Slash and burn?

BoMToons responds:
