Bongo Boom Battlegrounds is a strategy game inspired by Patapon for the Sony PSP. Customise your army, choose a mission, then lead them into battle using a drum-based control scheme to give commands. Along the way you will encounter an 18 chapter storyline, a variety of enemy soldiers and several large bosses to defeat!

One of the reasons I created this was because it was really HARD looking for a Patapon-type game for the PC, so I made my own: the general style and control scheme may be borrowed from Patapon, but the story, artwork, and other game mechanics are entirely my own. I hope you will enjoy it, and have fun! Feedback is most welcome...

Instructions to play can be found in the game, everything is controlled by the arrow keys and spacebar.

Additional note: Thanks for all the comments, everyone! I hope you all had fun with the game. I've taken note of the more constructive suggestions and criticisms, and am currently working on the sequel... as for those who still feel it's too much of a patapon ripoff, then i sincerely apologize! it was never meant to be a 100% ripoff, i just really liked the idea of using drumbeats to control an army... so i made my own version of it. :)

Not bad at all

There's actually a tiny little straight-up Patapon game you can find here on NG, but it's dismally short. I've been looking for something like it too, so this hit the spot, more or less. I never had any problem with the beat - since it IS going fairly fast, it's possible to recover from any errors that much faster. Sure it was pretty much lifted from Patapon, but that was obviously intentional and there's nothing else like it online as far as I can tell.

It really needs a menu, where you can customize your army whenever you want (rather than just before starting levels) and see the command list (because if you missed it the first time, you're screwed). The basic spearmen seemed buggy in that they moved backwards when they attacked, so that sometimes they would end up behind the flagbearer, accomplishing nothing.

Also: does the enemy level up at exactly the same rate you do? It seemed that whenever I got a new kind of unit, the enemy would gain it the same level, so that the difficulty remained the same.

A nice little game that I'll probably be replaying occasionally.

Not the real thing but pretty close

Like the artist value in this, and is very much like the game. However, the drums sound off beat and doesn't seem to match with the tempo of the game. Also, the kill mode should probably be more dramatic, didnt find it that exciting. Good work though! But alot of improvements need to be done.

Timing is an issue.

I absolutely LOVED the patapon games, and this is a great game to reminisce on that. It's just the timing that frustrates me. If you could fix that, I could sit and play this game for hours without wondering why the timing is off. 7 for now. :)

Not bad

It's not bad, but just bluntly speaking, it IS a rip-off of Patapon, not exactly inspired. If inspired, the gaming experience would be different from Patapon, WHICH is not at all. Same goes for gaming mechanics, same gaming feel compared to Patapon, so it can't be your own creation. If you want something more original in terms of game mechanics, you could create an option where we get to set up our own beats. Instead of something linear, people can be original creating their own rhythms.

The beat is a little too fast.

Now the good part.
Drawings are amazing, I give you credit for your effort to recreate a Patapon-like game for PC. It's really hard to completely copy a game that is not of the same console, so I give you two-thumbs up for that. Music's cool too. Storyline... I won't comment on that part because to be honest, I didn't have time for that, I only played a little :P.

A suggestion for your next work: See if you can make this game multiplayer.
