UPDATE: MEDALS ARE NOW FIXED.
- Air Recovery altered slightly. It gives a short burst of invincibility and pushes you into the air a bit so you can avoid getting it again.
- Worked a bit on the medal reloading script. If you unlocked medals before but the Newgrounds site didn't register it, try reloading the game. It's not foolproof but it should work most of the time.
- Fixed a few minor bugs and glitches.

I'm still trying to address the issue of the game not loading for a small number of people. Please be patient, it's quite hard to fix a problem when you don't know exactly what is causing it.

Inspired by Upgrade Complete, This game is a tribute to anyone who has ever sat there playing a game doing the same repeatable set of actions in order to get a arbitrary number to go up. It's a game about exploration, amnesia and collecting. Every action is will give you experience; You can gain levels in just about everything you do, from Jumping to Taking Damage to standing still and doing nothing at all. The world is sandbox, you can go anywhere you like as long as you level up enough. There is a catch though. Every night a re-occurring nightmare will rob you of everything if you can't survive it.

I have this love affair with Platformers and RPG's and this was my shot and bringing them together in an exciting taste explosion, with a little design flair of my own, some excellent editing/writing from Kayn, spiffy cut scene art from Gigas and awesome music from Triplefox. I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I enjoyed making it.

I'm desperately trying to get fixes checked in for the various problems reported. I've located the cause in the game. It's just uploading to NG that is causing me problems now as I have to wait an indeterminate amount of time between upload an update and it going live. I'll post something in nice big caps once it's all good again.

Yes, you can beat nightmare. Yes it's supposed to be really hard, that what nightmares are like. I made quite a few concessions along the way to make it easier than I had planned. I'm going to upload some Youtube videos of it being done. It's not as hard as it first may seem. Getting the Heart breaker achievement is MUCH trickier, I've yet to capture it on cam to prove it's do-able. The racing one is tricky. Max all your levels and a few well timed DASHES should get you through.

Some people might not like the ending, it was never the real heart of the game. I'm a big believer in games being about what you play rather than what you don't. Without the narrative that was created for the ending the world wouldn't be nearly as interesting as it is. In fact the game over all would be a little more dull because of it. The sequel is in the works, I'm already well into making it (get 100% completion and you can get an idea of -how- well started I am), I subscribe to running open devlogs of stuff I'm working on because it's what the players think that is important. It should be appearing Spring next year.

The walkthrough, which is seriously a work in progress is here:

If you are having trouble with either filling the codex or getting all the giant gems, check in. Theres still a bit of work to be done. It's the first walkthrough I've written and I'm -not- a fast typist ( unless it's AS3 code ^_^)

Thanks for playing :)

Thanks everyone for all the positive reviews, rates, feedback, oh and being told my game could 'die in a fire' because the boss was so hard. You have to work hard to get that level of frustration out of someone. ^_^

Whoa whoa whoa...

Normally, the difficulty curve of a game resembles something like a gentle hill with a few minor battles to ease you into the controls, followed by some more difficult battles for the bulk of the content and ending with one or two tits-grindingly hard battles with Godzilla or something like that.

This game however hands you a pair of rollerskates than shoves you down hill on easy street for the first ten minutes only to pull away the elaborate painting of a tunnel at the bottom at the last second to reveal a brick wall from which there is no recovery. The first boss means business and if you show up expecting anything other than some Ninja Geidan style shit, than your ass will get be sliced into deli meat and served back to you on on a bun. You can't dick around at all. If you spend more than 3 seconds of the first day faffing about instead of leveling up and gatheing gems you are fucked. You need every advantage if your going to stand a chance taking him out and even then it's going to take a lot of practice to get down the timing, which is further hindered by slipperiness of the jumping and running. Christ after about 4 tries I managed to get level 5 healing, level 4 fortitude, 5 hearts total, regen, level 4 running and jumping, and air recovery in the first day, and I still got my ass kicked. And as if he wasn't hard enough, he gets stronger! Why? I mean I could see him getting stronger with each encounter (see the previously mentioned difficulty curve description), but making him level up as you're fighting him is just impossible, especially considering you have no attacks of your own guarenteeing that he'll level up quite a few times even if you hit him at every possibility. A lot of it isn't a level issue or skill issue for that matter. As he levels up his attacks get harder and harder to dodge and to be honest, the control you have over your character isn't fine enough for it. Jumping and running feels stiff and the afore mentioned sliding means stopping or turning precisely is impossible.

That boss is far, far to difficult for the first boss and there's far to steep a penalty for failing. It takes the fun out of the main gimmick of leveling up when it's near impossible to actually keep your levels. Better controls or an attack button might fix it but right now it's just too hard.

Great Game

I like the level system. It's really creative and I've never seen it in any other game I've played.

Amazing!!

This game is legendary!! so simple yet incredibly addictive and fun... Many people are saying it is annoying because you lose your levels but as ur learning goes up (and you dont lose that skill) your levels come back up much much faster and u keep all the mail posts so u can warp around the map and u keep all ur other skills (like dash and double jump...) so its rlly not so bad.
The game is the perfect length so as not to get boring and has good enough replayable content and the boss becomes easy once u are leveld up enough. I have gotten every medal and im still playing!! i love this game!!
If i had to say one thing as constructive criticism (though i rlly had to look for a flaw) it would be the end story wich wouldve been cool if done as pixels like the begining.
Congrats tich007uk probably my favourite game on NG

8-bit goodness

The 8 bit style graphics were perfect! It looked exactly like an old classic platformer game would look like.

The Heartbreaker medal IS attainable, as I have gotten it along with all the other medals.

The controls were a little dodgy, and take a bit getting used to, a minor annoyance at best. It's too easy to accidentally activate the DASH when you don't want to use it, and that was the most annoying feature about the controls.

And a little humor is always appreciated. Good job, and the sequel looks promising.
