Thanks everyone for the many kind reviews! We're hard at work on part 2...

After a long time in development, the adventure begins. This was a labor of love. Hand painted backgrounds and characters all scanned and worked up with Flash. Everything should be working alright, but if you notice any major issues please let us know and we will fix them right away. Thank you Tom for the sponsorship! It lets us keep making games like this. Special thanks also to Mike Rudolph for making such excellent music. This is part one of a three part game so stay tuned for more Gretel and Hansel!

I loved this game!

This was a beautifully done little game. I was particularly impressed by the water color effect it was all in. Very nice. I loved the graphic nature of the game as it added a sort of "adult" fairtale" aspect. The only things I didnt like were how annoying the slingshot was to use sometimes, and that Its not just one big game but a bunch of peices I guess. That being said, I can't wait to see what comes next.

A grim tale narrated through an excellent game

What really caught my eye wasn't the wonderful art style but the way the characters and scenery moved and interacted, and together with the well chosen art style it strongly reminded me of a toy theater but with interactive digital paper puppets instead, and I suppose that was also the basic idea of the game's visual style and core mechanics, and the end-result from the overall game composition certainly conveyed that idea with success.

The game's music is just fantastic and simply an excellent choice regarding the game's theme, and it certainly sets an interesting mood for the game when playing, although I keep getting reminded of a completely different game when I hear that moody music. Sound effects; an important aspect of the composition of a game (or movie) and the sound effects in the game are well placed in general but the more notable part of the game's sound theme is the interesting choice of using an indistinct speech for the characters that certainly further adds to the feeling of playing a game with digital paper puppets in a Grimm-based story. While the little protagonist's voice is really cute and stamps her as a good character, the mother's harsh and angry voice befit her really well and along with her face it sure tags her as heartless and egoistical, and is easily identified by the player as the game's antagonist; well done. On a side note: sometimes Gretel's voice is too cute to hear when she gets killed, and the game plucks the strings of morality through choices; do I really want her to stand directly underneath that creepily huge spider just so I can get myself another pointless achievement? In this case I did it... thrice, just so I could get everything medal-wise (sigh). Interesting concept regarding the deaths in the game and the idea sure connects well to the violence found in many of the Grimm tales, and I like the (albeit rather gory) pun on a certain popular scene from "The Shining". I actually saw the movie a few hours ago as this years choice of a halloween movie.

Despite a really good game design and a generally well put together game I must however criticize the many bugs that got shipped with the submission; it should really have been extensively tested by several people before the initial release, so any hidden bugs or graphical mishaps would've been spotted and corrected prior the release. Many games are more or less bound to have some bugs yet here are too many issues to be found for it to be acceptable in a small flash-game with high potential.

Bugs found: The character Hansel have several bugs related to him 1) in the house when getting killed: can slow down the game's pace and almost freeze; 2) during the last part of the game when picked up by the crow he sometimes float down from the top of the screen and survives, instead of plunging down to his death (probably occurred from hitting the bird). Graphical issues are found everywhere in the game; instead of correctly standing behind a certain backdrop Gretel instead stands in front of the backdrop, distorting the visual style for a moment. Using the slingshot extensively seems to sometimes slow down and almost freeze the game.
All these glitches sadly retracts review points even though the game clearly deserves a full rating. Yet I played the game for three times not only for the medals but it is actually a fun game that has a high replay value!

I might try out one more time just to experience the game with the easter egg activated (what fairy tale may the masks refer to, if any?). Both the sequel and the threequel will be impatiently anticipated by this reviewer, but don't forget to playtest them extensively first.

A highly recommended game!

Entertaining

Not a particularly long game, but for the time you are playing, it is fun. Kinda makes me think of the American McGee's Grimm games.
