My thesis project way back 2008 about Chinese-Filipino Interracial Relationships.
An animation something close to my heart.

This was just so perfectly done. I don't know what to say. The animation was fluid and the images complemented the songs in every way. The way it is all tied together gives a feeling of satisfaction at the end. The choice of how to make the storyline flowed as well, and I loved the choice of secondary song, it made me laugh. It's one of my favorite songs.
I would have rather watched a serialization of this than the Love and Marriage show. :P And the show is really good, so that's saying something.
The only thing I can think of to critique would be that the mouths while they're talking don't look realistic sometimes. They look a bit pasted on, but that's only a very small problem. There was a slight issue of connecting the lip movement with the song, but it was very slight, not big enough to notice very well.
Overall, a perfectly made animation. 10/10
It was a great combination of things that came together to tell a very good story. Animation was fluid, all of the technical stuff was really high quality. The only thing that sort of bothered me was that it was a little long, and it resolved itself too abruptly - I was really confused when the Mother had the dream about her daughter. My favorite part was when she sang I need a hero. THat was an awesome sequence.

wow this was extremely entertaining. everything looked amazing and the way you shifted the plot with the music was just awesome! great job.
The animation was a little limited to certan movments but you had enough to make it look good and you have enough to get your point across! I really liked it it's nice how you took such a song and made it a good one (most men I know laugh because of the fact that marrige isn't somthing most men like nor have a good veiw on!)

There was a great underlying theme in this flash. The music complemented the story very well. Your animation and graphics were top-notch. I really liked the style of animation. Overall, really great flash.

I was expecting a short music vid, not an Epic mini musical. Very well thought out and executed. Unique art style and superb story telling. Great Job.
In the beginning it was all bubbly and cute and then it Tuned out into somekind of melodrammatic opera what was totally unexpected. Still, The Storytelling was Great and the transitions from imgaginitive parts so actual happenings were so fluid, you really had to keep your eye to the Story all the time. And i liked how it came all together in the end. Very nice Animation! Keep it up!

WTF king kong ?
Ok here's the deal, this is the first time in a while that I've felt a little spark from a flash. It kept me entertained and the art was nice and kept changing styles (which I greatly enjoyed).
Alright time to give a reason I gave an 8. The overall quality was fine but during the whole "I need a hero sequence" I felt little heart put into the work that was done. The characters felt lifeless and uninspiring. Mainly because the lip-syncing didn't keep up with the song and the animation of the lips were just off they didn't stay constant and it just bothered me.
Also the other problem with that scene was that you only moved her arms and not her whole body. I mean she needed to sway move around a bit and move her legs.
That's about all the criticism I have for ya so keep up the good work!
The plot was a cliche, but I enjoyed it regardless, which is all that really matters. =3 I liked the use of songs to play out the story, although it did slightly irk me because some of the lip-synching was off, but that's also forgivable. I'd also like to point out I have mixed feelings about the flow of information, as it were. Im mainly referencing the fact that its no secret that at the end its a happy ending. I liked it because Im glad they were together and I got reassurance of the happy ending, but equally, it didn't allow me to indulge in the story as much as I would of liked too. I knew how it was going to end so I didn't really get worried or sad like you were probably trying to get out of me during some of the parts.
However, ultimately this was a great work and you accomplished the message you tried to get across. =3 I see this being a front pager.

ahaa, no they deserve it, stealing work as they do. I like the copyrght message at the end, very original, litterally. anyway, I loed the video and how the songs changed but it always stayed together nicely, good job. can't wait to see more.

I thought it was a strange choice of songs, but you managed to use them to create something really unique, with the right mood to each part of your animation.
And oh, nice use of background textures, facial expressions and color combinations/effects. I'm sure you had a lot of work with those, and man... you've succeed it! =)

This really moved me, mostly because i´m in a situation kind of like this myself right now... thanks for making this, I really liked it.
The lip syncing really bothered me. The mouth placements didn't really seem to go with the words at all times. Not a music vs. video issue... just the wrong mouths.
It's marvelous, though not without flaws. I don't get what is a monkey part about, and "Need A Hero" lip sync did not quite worked.
It was a bit lengthy than expected, but holy hell was it amazing. I liked it to say the least. May you continue what you do best.
Ha, this was great. It's good to know that Newgrounds members can still produce something wholesome like this without being gross out or cruedly funny. The Asian male depictions of classic White heroes was a good twist.

i fancy this flash....
OK, so at first I was simply enchanted by your use of the song Love and Marriage along with some very smooth animation techniques with a distinctly Asian flavour. When the 'tragic end' came I admit I almost thought you might either end it there or else add a swift conclusion but I really wasn't prepared for a zany take on Jennifer Saunders version of Holding Out For A Hero, which by the way was brilliant and won me over completely.
Some great imagination here, some funny moments the the 'X Factor/American Idol' style clip as well as some interesting artistic choices such as the girls Mother and (especially) Father imagining the young couples elope as the boy coming like a monster to 'steal' their precious daughter away.
I did love the end with how the singer of the flash movie's signature song was actually the boy in the flash and in the end everything turned out OK.
Some turbulent moments, and some quite grim (the Mother's dream about how their daughter would take the thought of marrying someone she didn't love and subsequently hanging herself), but it all works well to complete the story and make it believable.
I only hope that in years to come we could be making flashes of an equal nature about the ups and downs of same sex marriages. Here's hoping.

Story well told, awesome use of music, verrrrry good synchronisation and everything in a package that should appeal to pretty much everyone.
I could talk about the animation, sound, art, or style, but that was all flawlessly produced. What really puts this one over the top is the storytelling. It was understandable, intuitive, and didn't force the audience to forgive any lapses in quality.
just fuckin amazing
I liked that this is an interracial couple (more like inter-ethnic). You really don't actually hear too many first-generation (I'm assuming) Chinese and first-generation Filipinos hitting it off, even though they're out there. The woman's family is very family-oriented and fit the traditional customs of a Chinese person's background. There was even a rich Chinese man her family wanted to marry her off to.
Sadly, the only culturally ethnic subtleties given for the man are his dark skin (even though Filipinos can be light), slightly large eyes, the school having the Filipino flag (I zoomed in, and there were even the tree stars), and the tricycle, the one depicted in the flash being a pedal-powered one.
Onto the review:
I liked the choices in songs. I was ecstatic to here past the first few lines of "Love & Marriage", popularized thanks to Married with Children, but never fully played. I liked the transitions from one song to the next. They weren't so smooth that it seemed like one song, but that's on different technical issues; you really synched up the songs nicely, although there's one part where it sounded like you cut part of "I Need a Hero" out. The ending seemed out of synch with the song though.
The art style was cute. It had an Asian feel, which was the theme; interracial Asian marriages being seen as wrong. Some of it was in a more comic book fashion as well, and there's also that paroy of King Kong.
The storyline is the main point of this flash that I loved. If one thinks about it metaphorically, then one would assume the Chinese in general view Filipinos as nothing more than brutish barbarian apes who try and take their daughters from them. It really adds to the racial tension, but makes me wonder where the man's family is. I was also curious to know if the Chinese family were Christians of some kind, or if they just happen to have a more Christian wedding.
All in all, this was really great! Honestly, when I see more quality flashes like this with Asians, I always want to see more of the South East Asians. It's nice to know that there's some recognition, and even though the general idea of a Filipino is a darker Asian, that's not always the case. The same goes for the typically lighter-skinned Asians. Thanks for bringing up something that few people even realize exists.

I'm having a problem in my life almost identical to this. It really struck a chord with me, and it's very true. This might not happen to everyone, but it does happen. It sucks! Thanks for reminding me that I'm not the only one having to deal with this crap.

Im a european guy in love with an asian (not korean though) girl, whose whole sourroundings (friends family colleagues etc) try to seperate us and get her together with someone rich. She is a singer as well (see 'i need a hero'). I used to perform the musical footloose several times (as a musician) (where "i need a hero" comes from) and on top of that her friends mock me witch "hairy ape"...
this was just too good.

it was really good but it was down right random.
It started somewhat of a light hearted, jokey cartoon of about 2 lovers. It then suddenly turned into some crazy tragedy which then led on to some crazy ass, epic ballad.
It was actually really fun to watch.
The graphics were good but i think the lip syncing could be improved. The way the teeth kind of appear in the girl's mouth while she is singing doesn't seem real and the mouth movements themselves seem amateurish. Your use of perspective was good. And all poses made by characters seemed natural and well done. Your artwork was refreshing and quite new to me with a nice mix of traditional American pop-art style mixed in with some Japanese style which blended together very well.
The music choice was good as it told the story well and added lots of different moods to create an overall diverse atmosphere.
The story itself was sweet. There were some slight cliches in there but they can be easily overlooked in order to see the actual gem of an animation this is.
Well done sir, effort well paid off to create a lovely piece. 8/10. Excellent.

I suspected it was going to be something great from the beginning, but I was very happy to find out that was just the beginning! The transition of music themes was great, not to mention how well the animation was. It's always great to see Eastern animation here, especially when it has such high quality! I enjoyed every second of this, not just for the wonderful visuals and music, but for the great lesson this taught about true love and everything! I had no idea what was going on (I don't know what the King Kong thing was supposed to mean) but every part of it was wonderful!

I'm not sure if would have interpreted the first song the way you did, and there were some points of the story that I felt didn't match each other.
On the other hand, the animation was extremely well made, and it's obvious that you worked hard on it. I think the lipsync worked out pretty good as well :)

The style was nice but the animation lacked alot.
The style is very nice! I would say the animation needs a little polishing. Like the lipsyncing of the dad. Tip, if you move the head of a character while he's talking, it's much more believable that he's actually saying the words you hear. But anyway the style made up for all that. And a fun story too!
the only thing keeping this from a ten is lip sync, it looks fake when you use tweens. mmm and maybe everything else relied too much on tweens. Try some more frame by frame. STYLE WAS AWESOME, and your drawings too.
I didn't find this one bit enjoyable.
I laughed out loud at the brief American Idol scene. There are a lot of different styles here that you threw together remarkably well. Some of the lip synching seemed off, but I still loved it.
It was an interesting story and i like the animation, despite the lip syncing of in parts. The part where she starts singing is so random (but good).

There are so many things I can say here! I'll give you 3:
1. I was a huge fan of "Married With Children," how you started this flash with Ol' Blue Eyes and the happy couple, and her parents refusing to accept that she loves him, and not man THEY wanted to marry was funny. But then.....
2. It got serious with "I need a hero!" The fact that her parents would never accept the guy as her husband really angered me. I couldn't help but sympathize with the lovely lady. If you love someone, regardless of their class or status in life, who the HELL is to say that person should be denied that right to love that person?!!
3. The ending with the couple, (who stayed together after all) and having built their own family, was very nice.
As a brain game, number-crunching guy, sometimes it's nice to reminded of the foundation principles of life. Thank you for this flash, and do more if you can!

Very very very nice. Tbh, i wasn't expecting anything good when I read the title, but with one click, you have one handedly made me feel like a kid (tom and jerry/ warner bros. cartoon style opening), to an adult ( relationship/ marriage themes).
To be honest, most chinese parents ARE like that, but not all. I feel that sometimes, it's not JUST chinese people who hold such ideals. Indian, British and even Africans hold the idea of non inter-racial relationships and are even money/ power driven too!
Personally, I feel that in these times, love is colourless, but it is the flaw of most people nowathesedays, ESPECIALLY elders. Therefore it is up to the next generation of kids/ couples to change this way of thinking, however, it would possibly leave the generation of inter-racial kids a sense of not knowing where they stand in ie, a community. If you were half chinese half indian, where would your community be? where would your traditions lie?which religion would you choose??! It would be a very tough commitment to please BOTH communities, but it CAN DEF. be done. It is a sad fact in this life that we have racial barriers in this world, but if more people were as open minded as you, maybe these barriers will one day collapse...like the berlin wall...?
At the end of the day (and possibly the moral of the story), if 2 people love each other, race and religion should NEVER be a barrier, but a compromise with parents may be needed, especially if one side is overwhelmingly 'traditional' -depicted by the chinese parents, and if both sides are equally traditional, there may be alot of compromises needed.
I take it this cartoon was done in homage to a certain couple? Regardless, I loved it to the end, and the fact that it brought alot of philosophical questions in my head, with a couple of giggles as well, this is a perfect number.

Yet I don't see what you tried to pass through this nice(rough on the edges but it's ok), cartoonish animation.
It was done before, if you know what I mean.
What I mean is, that it failed to grip me as it brought, well, admittedly, nothing new to the type.
There are 2 types of flash animations- those that try to be cool(which is easier) and those that try to pass some message to the people.(which is significantly harder) It's double the difficulty, if you try to have both or in between. So, my advice - make a better plot, a better message. Or stick to the fun stuff, with which you can get along pretty nicely just as well. It's all about how you feel about it.

amazing one of the best i have seen in a while.
Each song section is better than the whole. It would have been a cool if they were apart, different styles and different tellings of one overarching story.
With a thesis like this, you must SURELY have passed with flying colors! Talk about a lot of WORK! Phew! Great job! :-)

Only complaint is the video going out of sync occasionally. The video went much deeper than anticipated, felt like a succinct Disney Film. (Of course that view could be affected by the Hercules reference)

Amazing. The skill brought here on the blending was simply brilliant. It was a classic story with a good original feel to it. For that, and because this is just simply more then any simple flash video. I give you a 10/10. Great stuff.

not bad made. The start of the vid was kinda slow and not really entertaining, but it still grew better and better. So 7/10 Poins, sorry not more, since it hasnt reached the quality and awesomeness in story and detail like other flashs, i want just to give u examples like Bitey of Brackenwood series or the There She is Series, thats a whole other dimension. But still its not bad. polish ur skills and put more work into it and it might get real good

I have to fully agree with baeduxai, it was really really cheesy, couldn't watch the whole thing, I think it was because the music was so literal to the animation, and those songs are sooooo corny. But I can tell a lot of hard work went into it, and the animation itself was good. There's nothing wrong with a good ol' fashion love story , but this was so corny!
.... 'Hero' just totally ruined it.
The animation was great, 'Love and Marriage' suited it very well. The flash in general was very cute and had a nice message behind it. Worth at the very least 9 stars.
But then 'Hero' comes along and distroys all credibility. I can think of half a dozen songs off the top of my head that would have suited it better, tens more if I thought about it.
Very nice try, but next time, please leave out popular culture.

why are the asian parents the only ones getting angry at the marriage?
It's an excellent piece that really does see how some families tend to be with their children in that they see and expect money to be a primary speaker for success and happy life. This carries in on from the Great Depression and the idea of money = happiness due to the huge lack of it.
I can't see this as a racist piece in the least and to be quite frank, anyone who says such a thing is either ignorant or uneducated.

Idk maybe recruit some animation help, or more practice, experience, etc. I LOVEDDD the idea and direction of it, it was AMAZING... it just didn't quite have the execution to, uk, LIVE UP to the premise. I could almost compare it to Twilight LOL. I heard great things about the book but thought the movie was really amateurishly done. shoot for Lord of the Rings!! lol. 5/5 9/10 TOTALLY faving.

I love the story you came up with for this song, you actually made a flash funny, romantic yet sad at some points and managed to make it great.
You have my full respect because it's hard to combine all of these elements and make it into something truly wonderful. Keep it up if you can.

@Shong1up: As stated before, I do understand where your coming from, but with certain families if the person isn't even of the same race their a little skeptical, if not over the top. They may have both been Asian, but it appeared the guy in the animation was Indian, and not of the Chinese culture. So the girl's parent's disapproved. It appeared that they wanted her to not only marry someone of their race, but someone rich, and the Indian guy didn't appear like he had much.
