L'Amour de Rasputin

This cartoon was made for a surrealism class as my final. In other words, if you don't get this, it's probably doing it's job. I made a lot of effort to make it look and feel as much like a surrealist film from the 1920's, right down to the art deco-esque fonts, grainy film, awkward cuts and authentic music.

The biggest influences on this were Salvador Dali's "Un Chien Andalou" and my own previous attempt at this style, "The Death of Mini Rasputin". This serves as a spiritual successor to my previous Rasputin flash that nobody saw. All in all, this is a parody, but serves well enough as an honest jab at the surrealism game. In case you were wondering, yes, the music was heard in "The People's Mario". That's where I heard it and figured it would fit perfectly with my surrealist vision.

I wrote this during a surrealism class and animated it over the course of a few hours. As a result, it's rather short, like a lot of the flashes I've been making lately. I promise I'll get back to the big epic length ones before too long. It's just more relaxing to make short films.

Anyway, tell me what you think. I respond to all reviews!

I liked it

~~REVIEW~~
Hmm well that was differant, it was very short but the {GRAPHICS} were very good even in Black and white, allthough you should add some {COLOR} maybe just abit here and there just a few focus points, of color, this film had a whole german feel to it though, i do like your characters and the music was very german sounding guess that was the idea, but really it was ok, so how can you improve on this one? well for one you can make this longer, more of a story, and more differant scenes then what you had, but again for what it was it was notbad, anyways good luck on anything new you got going on.

~~THINGS TO IMPROVE ON~~
Could be longer and more other scenes and such more of a story to it

~~OVERALL~~
It was entertaining could be longer

~X~

I don't quite understand your {FORMATTING}, you can just use plain ol' English dude.

It was fully intentional for this to be black and white, and I didn't really want to have the rasterbated/Sin City sort of "black and white with one color" that's become so passe. The music was Russian, and the writing was French; I was going for a surrealist film idea. I'll admit there's really not much of a story here, it's just sort of strange for the sake of it. Glad you found it entertaining anyway.

Eh, I've seen better

This was interesting for a really short cartoon but there was not much else to recommend. I liked how you put it in the style of an old black and white thing. I think that was what movies were the time that Rasputin was alive himself. I could not quite understand the joke with the shaved beard. This seemed to be something Russian, but the words appeared to be done in French. Still, it was a bit unique.

I find it odd you would want this to be in the "Noir" section. Apart from the black and white usage, I didn't see how it was much of a noir. In fact, I don't even think there were many noirs that were also silent films. It was interesting how even the advertising in this was black and white! The animation was good, it just needed more action.

Battosai810 responds:

This was a surrealist piece, which is why it was in (Googled) French. The beard thing was just weird for the sake of weird; it was a long time ago so I don't know if there was any other reason.

I actually don't think most of Newgrounds' "sections" have been updated in years. I don't know if it's just something that got left by the wayside or what.

Sorry you didn't enjoy this cartoon too much; try watching some of my other, more conventional work. I'm better at making funny cartoons than surrealist ones!

Well done *applauds*

That's probably the best written piece of yours that I've seen - the way that the beards are shown at different lengths and Jethro getting given a new beard from what appears to be a cut-throat razor, dripping with blood.

Of course, these things are never meant to last and in return for supplying him with what he wants the most, the peasant Jethro embraces communism (the sickle). This then leads to the symbolic downfall of the workers, as USSR communism was as flawed a concept as an ice cube dispenser in hell (How would they get the power to the damned thing?!)

But alas, the lure proves too much for Rasputin (Please tell me that was he) and so communism claims yet another scalp and the USSR fell, derailing the communism that was seeded there by Stalin and Lenin.

A simple animation that really hits hard.

Battosai810 responds:

That's pretty much the best summary/interpretation of this cartoon that I've seen, actually. I really wish more people saw this cartoon and enjoyed it, but most people just get scared off by anything resembling a foreign language. Glad you liked the toon!

Bwahahahahahahaha!

That was awesome, it definitely had the WTF of those surrealist films.

Battosai810 responds:

Glad you liked it :)

either that was absoltue garbage

or my brain melted at some point so I didn't quite get it

Battosai810 responds:

It's probably both. It's surrealism - you're not supposed to get it.
