Skull in Connemara

*edit* Frontpage! Thanks Tom, you're a doll! A sexy sexy doll! :3

Brace yourselves good folk of Newgrounds, this is not the sort silly weird cartoon you're used to seeing from me, and it's not the sort of stuff I'm used to creating. It kind of freaked me out having to be serious for the past week.

A few months ago a close friend of mine Justin Stephens told me he was directing the play A Skull in Connemara and asked if I would create an animated introduction for it. I said yes.

This animation was created to be twin projected onto the back wall of theatre before the beginning of the first Act of the play A Skull in Connemara, with the audience looking through the set and a layer of mist to see it. The result was very atmospheric, and I should be able to upload a recording of it in action soon so you can get a better idea of the final result. I've embeded a video of it in the newspost on my userpage so you can get a better idea.

The style was dictated by both the play, the music, and a story outline for this introduction which Justin created and gave me, which is quite a dark black comedy set in rural Ireland, about a man who has the job of digging up the old bones in the local cemetery to make room for the newly dead.

It's about a 60 / 40 split between rotoscoping (drawing over footage of actor Paul Kennedy) and my imagined animation, all created on a wacom cintiq drawing in white then "scratching back" with the eraser to create a scraper board or wood cut sort of look.

I hope you like it, and please leave me a review letting me know what you thought of it.

Son of a bitch, how many awards did you get for this masterpiece? It's outstanding! The sketch-work is extraordinary. The woodcut vibe is perfection, and the black and white just appeals to the eye like a glorious soft kiss of death from Christopher Lee.

Epic!

That was great! One thing I really love about this is how you drew just a few white scribbles to portray a person walking, It's just brilliant! The whole thing looks really good.

TheBoogley responds:

Your whole thing looks really good! :3

still good!

Even 2 years later its still great to watch. very nice job!

TheBoogley responds:

cheers! :D

I like the art work on the Skull, it was cool looking. Here's a question though, how long did this animation took? I really wanna know how long it took, so please respond to that question! And I want you to respond because I've want to see someone respond to me once again even though I already got 13 responses, but please, reply!

Bye!

Characters remaining: (Don't ask, just like to do this just for fun :D) 2,937

TheBoogley responds:

This took a week to animate, but I was working crazy hard on it, 14 hour days, and the storyboard and some footage of the actors had already been shot, we planned the piece out gradually over months.
Thanks for the review, you're a funny guy! :D

Haunting

The disembodied images floating forward to confront the viewer effectively convey the haunted, pensive mood of the content of the images and of the music. Obviously of course the drawing itself is fantastic--I'm glad your friend MasterAardvark did his lovely birthday short or else I never would've seen this. By the way, happy birthday--Friday the 13th!--and thanks. 5/5

TheBoogley responds:

I'm glad you liked it, it's very different from anything else I've ever done :)
