Growing up in the run-down, dominantly African-American community of Watadump, Virginia, Deborah never had much of a real knack for the activities enjoyed by the other kids in her dangerous neighborhood. Gang violence, graffiti, and guns would constantly pollute the world around her, and all of the schoolkids teased her for her bookish, socially awkward tendencies.
Deborah began to have it even worse after the tragic scuffle in an alleyway that led to the death of both her parents on their way to buy some croissants from the local grocery. That cold, fateful Wednesday night left the newly-orphaned Deborah and her two siblings to fend for themselves, convincing the young girl to look towards an option that would break the door to her destiny wide open: Walking it out.
