Here is the Newgrounds Flash version of "A Bid for Freedom".

It is a story that I wrote and converted into a small fable with images provided by the talented Nacho Rodriguez (who created Mr. Coo and won the #1 slot in Cold Hard Flash's Best Animated) and lush watercolours by his girlfriend Cecilia Deshayes.
It is an illustrated storybook, narrated for your pleasure by the debonair Andy Dennis, with guest turns by Sasuya and Josh "Tomamoto" Tomar you HAVE to hear!
The Storybook route was pursued so it could enter ReNaeNae's excellent Storybook Collab; Talents in writing, art, voice, sound, code etc. should give it a look!

To turn the pages, hover your mouse pointer over the bottom corner of the page, then left-click and drag the page across with your mouse until it fully flips over.
Narration starts on each page as you view it, but you're free to read at your own pace (you can right-click and select "Zoom In", then drag around to see all the fine details).

This story is NOT an attempt at hair-pin-bend trigger-happy balls-to-the-wall FBF hentai-maniac game-parodying shenanigannary. NO REALLY, IT'S NOT!
The power here is in the words and the pictures.
There is COMEDY, ACTION, DRAMA and ROMANCE, all skewed at odd angles.
There's fantasy, exotic locations, body odour, and even a fast car if you stick with it!
Have patience, we've many things to offer you. Stick with us. We're a good group.

Please vote and review showing respect to the combined talent and hard work involved in this Flash. A lot of passion went into this just for you guys, so be fair.
Critique, constructive criticism, suggestions, these are things we graciously accept.
If you vote or review abusively, you let Newgrounds down. Don't.
If this is "not your sort of thing" or you're somehow disappointed by the lack of animation, this is not the fault of anyone involved; no-one's forcing you to watch!

With all this in mind, we hope you enjoy (with your drink or snack of choice) our hard work, vote and review responsibly... and may your day be brighter.

This section is for the creative people out there:

This has been a hot coal in my hands for quite some time, burning with collective passion, yet I've been reluctant to throw it into the fire.
Enough people are happy with the results as they stand for me to go forth and submit it.
Trust that this will blossom over time as we come back to better adorn this work.

My preliminary thanks are on this page:

I additionally thank DrNeroCF for saving us in the coding department and Deathcon for further help; Joey Young ( for providing sound effects at short notice and the Very Odd House (http://www.theveryoddhou for a small snippet of lush score; and to Josh Tomar, introduced late into the project yet he delivered an outstanding performance within minutes of me asking him.
Further thanks go to the Newgrounds Team for their support of this work, and to all Newgrounds users who do the same (including Mr GUS, who is highly underrated: be sure to see his latest and vote for it in this year's Treasure Hunt).
Any other great participants that come to light will be remembered here equally.

First off,I would like to commend Cecilia DesHayes on her wonderful watercolours. It is not everyday that we users see art like that on Newgrounds, mostly populated by hentai and stickman animations. The story is well written, although I was caught off guard thinking it was set in the past. The modern references do make the flash more humorous.I also almost thought it would be about vampires from the first few pages. The VO is superb.Andy Dennis did a fine job,his voice projected subtle nuances of the emotions the main character feels.Tomamoto also did a good job and although I do not know who is Sasuya,I will look out for her future works after watching this flash.Congrats too for I did not encounter any problems with the narration when I skipped pages back and forth quickly. There are a few improvements that neede to be made like clearer font and the option to go all the way back to the beginning after the end instead of flipping manually.Overall however, great job!

Sorry to reply so late to your review, I've had a bit of a backlog to attend to!

Thank you so much for your detailed critique; Nacho is a fantastic artist no question, but Cecilia definitely added something truly unique to this, her colourwork bringing out unspoken moods and sprinkling magic on every page. There was a time where it looked like she'd be doing all the artwork herself, but it was fantastically fortunate that Nacho was able to free up the time to work alongside her. They make a terrific team!

The VAs really brought the characters to life for me; Andy and Josh have had great track records but nevertheless came through with entirely different and equally enjoyable performances.
Sasuya was a magnificent find and the real breakout star here. We have such a famine of female voices on Newgrounds, and it is so difficult to find one who can convey all the emotions, with many falling back on simply being female as a way of getting hired. Sasuya debuted only recently, and she made an absolute splash with her role in this! She was a real star, honing her performance carefully and patiently perfecting lines. I couldn't be more proud of her; I hope she finds many more projects and that we'll also work together again soon!

The coding's pretty tight on this, thanks to Jon Bull, DrNeroCF and Deathcon!
I was worried the clips might run together and overlap, but they've been able to cleanly divide them.

The text issue has been fixed; enjoy!
So glad you like it enough to want to replay it straight away! It might be difficult to program, but if we can we'll definitely get a replay button in a future edition for you hardcore ABFF fans out there!

Cheers once again for the brilliant review!

Great work

The illustrations were wonderful, the voicework was brilliant, and the story, impeccable. Congratulations on making a success out of your storybook collab. Only thing to note is that the text is a little hard to read. This would have been a much bigger problem if the voices weren't as clear as they were.

I've seen your works in the Storybook Collab; you're very poetic and literate, so this kind of reception is truly wonderful. Thank you for checking this out and I'm thrilled you enjoyed it!

The text issue has been fixed; enjoy!

I very much look forward to seeing you deliver something for the Collab yourself; I hope to see you on here soon doing similiar business!

Cheers, and best of luck to you in your own ventures!

Nice game but you should warn people about that fridge that needs you to jump to avoid it..
All the players below me had this problem and they thought they died randomly..YOU NEED TO JUMP GUYS!

Having checked with you about it, it's now clear that you accidentally posted this review in this Flash as well as the game you're talking about. I'm looking to see what I can get done about this; if you liked this Flash I'd love to hear your opinion!

Great story

And very well narrated! Quite impressive my good sir! I loved the colors and the style, they flowed perfectly with the tale being told.

And might I say, smashing accent.

Well I verily thank you my fine acquaintance! I am thoroughly pleased it worked on all levels to entertain you! Andy's accent is jolly spiffing, I agree.
We'll see if we can deliver a sumptuous smorgasbord of Flash delights for your consumption.

/my terrible Terry-Thomas impersonation.

I love it! Again i agree the narration was a bit, odd, it just didnt suit what i thought the main character would be like. But hey, you can't please everyone. Every other part of the story rules!! Hahha i knew you'd keep the "chomp" in, what an awesome sample i have now of eating an apple.

AdamCook responds:

Haha, cheers man! Check your e-mails, I've copied you on a few things!

Yeah, that chomp was excellent! I'll have to see if I can get some more sounds in just to round it all out a bit more.

I think there's a split between what I make the guy say and what he actually looks like. If you were casting just based on the visuals then probably a rockabilly Elvis impersonator would be in order. As you say, each to their own; at least you enjoyed the story, that's the important thing!
