Here is the Newgrounds Flash version of "A Bid for Freedom".

It is a story that I wrote and converted into a small fable with images provided by the talented Nacho Rodriguez (who created Mr. Coo and won the #1 slot in Cold Hard Flash's Best Animated) and lush watercolours by his girlfriend Cecilia Deshayes.
It is an illustrated storybook, narrated for your pleasure by the debonair Andy Dennis, with guest turns by Sasuya and Josh "Tomamoto" Tomar you HAVE to hear!
The Storybook route was pursued so it could enter ReNaeNae's excellent Storybook Collab; /bbs/topic/1003968 Talents in writing, art, voice, sound, code etc. should give it a look!

To turn the pages, hover your mouse pointer over the bottom corner of the page, then left-click and drag the page across with your mouse until it fully flips over.
Narration starts on each page as you view it, but you're free to read at your own pace (you can right-click and select "Zoom In", then drag around to see all the fine details).

This story is NOT an attempt at hair-pin-bend trigger-happy balls-to-the-wall FBF hentai-maniac game-parodying shenanigannary. NO REALLY, IT'S NOT!
The power here is in the words and the pictures.
There is COMEDY, ACTION, DRAMA and ROMANCE, all skewed at odd angles.
There's fantasy, exotic locations, body odour, and even a fast car if you stick with it!
Have patience, we've many things to offer you. Stick with us. We're a good group.

Please vote and review showing respect to the combined talent and hard work involved in this Flash. A lot of passion went into this just for you guys, so be fair.
Critique, constructive criticism, suggestions, these are things we graciously accept.
If you vote or review abusively, you let Newgrounds down. Don't.
If this is "not your sort of thing" or you're somehow disappointed by the lack of animation, this is not the fault of anyone involved; no-one's forcing you to watch!

With all this in mind, we hope you enjoy (with your drink or snack of choice) our hard work, vote and review responsibly... and may your day be brighter.

This section is for the creative people out there:

This has been a hot coal in my hands for quite some time, burning with collective passion, yet I've been reluctant to throw it into the fire.
Enough people are happy with the results as they stand for me to go forth and submit it.
Trust that this will blossom over time as we come back to better adorn this work.

My preliminary thanks are on this page: /bbs/topic/1049617/3

I additionally thank DrNeroCF for saving us in the coding department and Deathcon for further help; Joey Young (http://joeymofo.newgroun for providing sound effects at short notice and the Very Odd House (http://www.theveryoddhou for a small snippet of lush score; and to Josh Tomar, introduced late into the project yet he delivered an outstanding performance within minutes of me asking him.
Further thanks go to the Newgrounds Team for their support of this work, and to all Newgrounds users who do the same (including Mr GUS, who is highly underrated: be sure to see his latest /portal/view/483436 and vote for it in this year's Treasure Hunt).
Any other great participants that come to light will be remembered here equally.

... wonderful, just wonderful. I'm at awe at the creative and down right clever writing, as with the illustrations and the narration. Allow me to detail my analysis:

- First off, hats off for the exceptional writing. I really mean it. You've got an amazing talent for adjectives, inserting them at the exactly right place, providing us with a constant smile and making the world you create a rich and interesting place.

The sarcastic descriptions are fantastic (and very british-like), while the mix up of the normal with the abnormal into a coherent story, while at the same time making both sense and sounding an awful lot like one big allusion, was really clever.

But not only that, the dry wit, the great flow and build up, culminating with a climax both anticipated and unexpected, and a resolution utterly appropriate and funny, makes for some great stuff. In all honesty, reading this story is one of the most fun I've had with a flash. Just great, great stuff.

- And, of course, the illustrations are just down right breathtaking. Nacho Rodriguez, well, I've always known how talented you are, since the Mr Coo series remains a landmark in flash animation and the drawings in this flash are excellent, with great looking characters (I love the faces!) that fit the story really well (i.e., they look like how the book describes them) and atmospheric backgrounds.

However, it was Cecilia DesHayes' watercolours that were an immensely pleasurable surprise. Cecilia, you've taken your boyfriends backgrounds and helped them make them not only atmospheric, but down right haunting. On pages 9 to 13, this is a literal statement.

So, overall, the drawings were nothing short of eye candy of the finest order. You know, not just a mere Mars Bar, not even a refined mint chocolate you take after a cup of coffee, but a genuine, 'haute cuisine'-like profiterole with a serving of dark chocolate sauce.

- The narration is excellent. Sarcastic when necessary, providing us with a feeling that our main character is, above all, a somewhat cynical, but ok guy. I think that you managed to convey a lot into the movie thanks to you great voice acting. And, of course, Sasuya also provided some great voice work too.

So, in summary, this about as good as it gets. A wonderful, clever, amusing and witty story, with truly exceptional and haunting illustrations, with great voice work. You've just set the bar for the other storybook flashes very, very high.

I can honestly say that there's not one element of this flash that I would change in anyway, which explains why this is such a poor review, as I've failed to provide a single, valid criticism. In my defense, I can only say that you guys shouldn't have done such a perfect job in the first place.

Immense cheers and kudos to every one of you, you've deserved it!

Heres the thing.

The reason I loved this so much was not only becsue it was a funny and heartwarming story (despite the end). But it was tottally unique.
A story? in flash? Awesome!
Kudos to the narrator whos voice was as clear as a crystal and I could hear every word, and understand them perfectly.
A well deserved 10

P.S. Fantastic little tale.

Excellent, as I expected

I was a bit surprised to see this submission so soon, I didn't know it was already so advanced when I read it.
I don't need to tell you I loved the story, I think that is clear by now, so I might as well comment on the other elements. At first I felt the narration a bit awkward (it was great, I just had a different idea when I read it), but he is obviously talented and with every page I liked it a bit more, in such way that at the end I was very comfortable with it. Maybe it was because the tone was a bit different from the cartoony looks of the character, but the final result was great, adding to the contrasts in the story. Also al other sound effects and voices were very well done and fitted the atomsphere perfectly.
Nacho's illustrations are obviously great, for the most of it, they surpassed my expectations of what the illustration for the next page would be.. and in some peculiar cases, it was EXACTLY how I had imagined it. I want to thank you also for recommending me to watch MR.Coo, I loved it, even fav'ed it.

Finally ,you can imagine my surprise when I read your comments and saw my username there. It was a very pleasent surprise, thank you for that. It is very important to me that someone who can write like this liked my story.

Nice Job

this is so wonderful. I enjoyed it a lot. the illustrations are well done, and the colors, and style fit well and are good. The monologue... aww, I loved it! When I heard the voice of the narrator, and the way that he speaks, the first thing that popped in my head was the Legacy of Kain series, it's a video game, which has a brilliant story script by the way, It's just like it. the narrators voice is a mix of Kain and Raziel, with the way he speaks and choices of words, but like I said before Nice job! I loved it!
