Graphics Techniques for The Noobs - Volume 1 - Scanlines

This tutorial is aimed at Photoshop users

its short as scanlines are fairly simple to make but id like some feedback.

ill be making more, perhaps bigger tutorials soon. If anybody would like to work with me just PM me and I'll be sure to reply,

Thank you to Lebastic for helping me out with AS problems.

(Id put some music in if i knew how to stop the song overlapping itself when you press the replay button, so some help there would be appreciated. ideas for future tutorials would be welcome too)

"Good detail"

A simple and effective little tutorial, which could ahve used a background tune - something ambient, just to take away from the glut of emptiness that's just begging to be filled with some sound of some description.

The detail seems simple enough that most people can deal with it - there aren't too many steps, where the user can easily get lost in and it looks like users will be able to make scan lines quite easily once they've used this tutorial.

Too bad I don't have photoshop, so I can't say if your tutorial is helpful or not.

But what I can say is, that your tutorial looks nice and simple. You didn't use any long explanations, but got straight to the point. You also used pictures along the text to show what you are talking about.

I think you should have added a few more examples to show what effects scanlines can have on pictures.

"Nice and simple."

But it was really missing some things.

Animation was fairly good. Nothing was that eye catching, just some screenshots on a blank background. Animation = 7

The idea was great. Especially for a tutorial. It allows some info to newbs at photoshop who don't know how they could do this. Hence 'tutorial.' Idea = 9

The execution was mild. Just a some little frames thrown together with each other. But, this is expected of tutorials. Execution = 8

You could have added:
A short song for people who are doing this on photoshop step by step.
A 'back' button incase someone didn't get something and had to restart.
A 'skip intro' button for people who are impatient and not needing of an intro.
The 'replay' not go back to the VERY start, just when the tutorial starts.

But it was good quality and helpful. Good job!

"good tutorial"

Visuals: simple and elegant, very good graphics for such a short flash, the pictures were easy to relate to the instructions, and the text was easily understandable very helpful for beginners, i myself having no experience whatsoever with PS could use scanlines now

Audio: none to evaluate, hope you figure that problem out soon

Overall: Content-wise i can't verify anything to be false or true, you seemed to know what you were talking about and had no problem writing it in such a way as to allow the viewer to glean information from it easily, add some music and a mute button when you do and it'll be even better

Animation/Graphics - Very simple, but you did have some actual animation in your tutorial when the text was kind of typed out in the very beginning. There wasn't any more animation after that though. The colors were good not only because they went well together, but also because the combination of colors made it very easy to read the text. Other then that there isn't anything else to comment on.

Story - The information was very good, but I still probably couldn't and won't use it myself, so it wasn't personally helpful. I'm assuming for people who use photoshop received some good information and hopefully it helped them. The text was organized well and the size was great to read. The pictures in your examples were of good quality and helped people who needed to see it be done visually.

Audio - Well, I see in your author comments that you were having trouble with the audio. I can't help you personally with that, but I'm sure if you have any flash questions then they would be able to answer it in the flash portal. This may be an audio problem, but I think it's more of a flash related problem. Things that could of been done if you weren't having problems could of been stuff like a simple background song, or maybe a selection of songs to use. You could go into even more detail like adding sound effects to when you click on the next or back button. I think that it would of been pretty cool if there was a typing sound effect, like a typewriter in the beginning when the text appeared across the screen.

Overall - A good tutorial, which I wouldn't be able to use myself, but hopefully others can. I hope you fix your audio problems and good luck on any future submissions.
