This submission was BLAMMED by our users.
Here is its eulogy, a collection of the kind words written about it while still among the living. They shall live on forever in its place.
08/13/08 – 08/26/08
--- Thanks all for the great reviews, with many excellent suggestions on improvements and bugs! I'm just back from a weeks hols and delighted you've enjoyed the game. I hope to make some fixes, and improvements as soon as I can. Thanks again. ---
****Important notice****
Newgrounds has NOT updated my latest version yet. They have to approve all uploads of files that are popular, so the version currently there is still the old one. You'll know the new one as it will have a MENU button in the battle screen during the game (top left).
Lastest changes
- added a Menu button in the main screen to return to the menu (no prompt, clicking it will instantly bring you back to the menu)
In an attempt to correct some more immediate issues, I've made the following changes:
1) changed Schizophrenia: now its +3 or -3 randomly to Arcane, Elder, and Taint individually.
2) changed Megalomania - now +3 Taint and Arcane each turn.
3) physical attacks (tommy gun, shotgun, raid) are no longer stopped by Invulnerability.
4) can now discard a card instead of playing it. The sanity cost of a discarded card is now added to your sanity.
5) Added rollover pop ups for the stats arcane, taint, and elder defense.
6) sanity can now go into minus (-10 max) (this is in preperation for a change in the sanity effects, which I have not yet finished programming)
7) Taint cards now increase taint by the taint number
8) Save game is now autosaved every level
9) Animations are sped up
*** SAVE GAMES - Because newgrounds encodes every upload with a new filename, save games will not be compatible with previous versions.
** I would love to make it multiplayer, but currently I don't have enough experiance to make it happen.
This game was a good game , it's a pretty good and cool cardgame. I came to lvl 3 and i don't have time to play more. But i liked it! Great work.
I love this game. It's just sooo entertaining!
This is actually good
I new cardgame to enjoy thats pretty impressive =)
its ok to play but after a while i just lost interest coz it dint seem to be going anywhere
Cool, a TCG based on the Mythos playable without other people.
Nice work.
1. Make a multiplayer version. This isn't a big deal, but some people want it. Keep the singleplayer version as well.
2. Make it where you can create your own deck, perhaps after beating the last enemy if need be.
3. Make the tutorial easier to use, perhaps it runs you threw a quick and easy game already in progress.
Other then that, very good game. Kudos.
Honestly, I expected I would just play a single round of this game then move on to something else. But instead I wound up playing for a few hours. You've done well to keep the rules simple while keeping it interesting. All aspects of the game surpassed my expectations, with the lack of a steady ambiance being my only distraction. I'd like to see if you can develop an improved version of this card game.
This is the best card game i've played in a long time. Kudos. Im just wondering if this is close to the actual game?
Excellent work, but as said, needs a multiplayer option.
but it was still pretty good
this is a really fun card game, its easy to get and its fun to play
the only thing to improve really is the sound, both ambient and that sound at the end where you defeat your opponent could be a little more convincing, and a little louder.
I don't think there's anything quite like this on NG. Good job this is fun.
A great game, I think there are some miner bugs here and there, like with the math with healing and damage. I also got to go one round with 0 life.
Otherwise, the best flash card game yet
Really love the Cthulhu Mythos myself.
One thing though:
Why does the Elder Sign One-Attack Invulnerability apply to Physical Attacks (Raids, Shotguns, etc.) as well as stuff that it obviously protects from?
i recognized the title of the game right away. i love the premise of the game, and for a card game it's surprisingly engaging and well thought-out. excellent homage to lovecraft's vision in making this game. love the creature summoning. just wondering though, are you the artist of the images on the cards, or are those from somewhere else? either way they were awesome renderings (the elder things still give me nightmares).
All in all, a great CCG game but the insanity attributes were ridiculous.
EG. I get Megalomania which is a death knell, I won with luck when I was down to 2 hp and had a 20 taint penalty just waiting for my turn to end...but the computer always seems to get Schizophrenia, which more often than not heals them rather than hurts them, and tends to erase all the work I do to get them to 0 hp while the comp sits back and hurls damage cards at me until I'm finished.
i kinda like it
I had a fun time playing the game. Don't know if this is a bug or the way it is meant to be. I lost all my sanity and got agoraphobia(the one that only lets you use two cards) and I used the doppelganger card. My sanity was now no longer zero, but I still could only use one card. I also somehow survived with 0 hp. The next hit killed me, but I had no HP for a little bit. I am not sure how it happened, I am pretty sure that somehow my taint put it below 1.
Good game overall. Never did I think the phrase "my taint is killing me" would pass my lips.
Very entertaining card game, I don't like these kinds of card games, but this game really got me going. Quite well done, and especially well planned out. I love this game. Thank you for such a masterpiece.
It could of used a few more cards though, but it was real fun, I would definitely like to see this expanded.
Great work, a superb card game ! I love the art work and the tactical options re good, I like the way spells cost sanity, true to the HPL atmosphere.
Cool but just not a HUGE fan of card games.
I didn't have sound, so I can't comment on that, but for someone who doesn't even generally like card games, I found this one to be pretty fun. That's sayin' something.
Good job!
Yes, it's fun and engaging. However, when I win my expectations of a game where the abilities you can use at a time are randomly determined, are that I meet stronger opponents when I have achieved the same level of strength. This irritates me due to the fact that I win, yet my opponents are stronger and I am not. If how you use random cards in one battle has a chance of determining the outcome of the next, it's a flaw when you include a system where a hard battle seems to give you less growth.
Im personally a fan of these online card games and this one was great.
I like the rank advancment system you got going, adds another level of fun to the game. Also, the gameplay is simple enough to pick up quickly, yet addictive.
Only addition would mayb b a little music for setting the mood and some online play, but otherwise, great game.
lost track of time on it. multiplayer would make this crack on ice.
great time killer. exelent concept.
wow, very adictiv lol.... alot to take in but i think i finally get it... i got to level 3 and was jus bout 2 kik the comps ass, but he had like 20 of those red lion things, duno wer he gt em frm, lol, and he hit me with a 7 damage n i lost :( wahhhhh lol.......very addictiv tho, need mor games like this, this is the frst kind of this game ive seen on newgrounds.... i thought there was alot of cards until i playd it 4 a bit, now i need more :P lol, need mor damage cards, theres only a few to start off with, dnt no hw mny u ern?
This is the best necronomicon game ever *kisses feet* please make more dude xD but a special for necromancers xD
This game is perfect except...
Loading doesn't work right. Both players start off with no health at all (not even 0) so you can beat your opponent only once they have healed (giving them a life total) then removing it by any sorta damage.
Multiplayer and more cards would make this better as well.
Can't enjoy it for 3 prominent reasons:
- Too many glitches.
- Unfair game play.
- You don't get to pick your deck.
Look at Monster Master and you'll see a good card game.
0/10
0/5
Good game but can you give me a list of the insaneitys? TY
The game has a brilliant atmosphere about it and balances things fairly well. One thing I noticed that one could consider unfair though was the insanity "Megalomania". The 5 taint *which remains 5 as it does not accumulate* does not balance well. I would gladly take 5 damage every turn if I could deal my opponent 15+15 damage 3 turns later.
very nice, as others have set youve done a great job, although pickin a deck or atleast some type of cards would help imo or at least a shuffle most of the time i dont get attack cards n get my ass whooped while ive been tainted...sorry ppl who havent played yet.....
But does it ever end? how many ranks are there? I'm currently at rank 20
I'd like a multiplayer option even though that requires extensive coding, but to improve the single player mode I'd suggest that you add auto save after every level, possible story line, and cutscenes to go along with that story line. Oh and more cards and customizable deck
Anyone who would take the time to script all those variables and still do a great job with the artwork deserves a perfect 10. I love the concept, it's kinda like Zombies meets Magic. Great job!
I just bought the Necronomicon 5 days ago and have been loving it! This game is a great homage to the legend that is Lovecraft :D
First and foremost, I'm a sucker for card games. Additionally, I'm a sucker for the Cthulhu Mythos, so you can imagine my excitment when I saw this submission.
Gameplay is good. There's a bit of strategy involved, but I couldn' help but feel that it was mostly luck. This is mainly due to the "draw one, play one" structure of the game, but that cannot be helped without complicating the gameplay further. It would be nice if the structure and mechanics of the game were fleshed out a bit. Also, going on with the "random" compliant, the insanity effects turned out to be either harmful or helpful depending on circumstances. This unreadable mechanic made the player's stockpile of insanity almost unnecessary to monitor since one didn't know if it would help or hurt when it ran out. The only reason I found myself gauging my sanity was when I had the game in the bag and found it unnecessary to take the chance of insanity.
The card set is balanced, for the most part. I like that you introduced new cards every so often, it kept me playing till the end. Some cards though were overpowered, or really annoying. Most of these cards are the unlocked kind. Doppelganger primarily was very frustrating. One more turn to the win then my opponent replenishes his health and gets my stat boosts. great.
The AI isn't too bright either. There were times where it would summon a 3 attack creature when it already had 6 attack out. Or it would sit on a dispel all game when I was building a mountain of arcane enhancement. It's almost as if the AI is nothing more than a random number generator, randomly choosing a card to play.
Some ideas to implement:
- I think sanity should replenish automatically 2 points per turn unless affected by a card. Sanity ran out quick in the later matches when I was dealing with life totals above 100, and depending on a card or two to stabilize sanity was frustrating.
- Perhaps different levels of insanity depending on how much of one's sanity is depleted. For example when 50% to 70% of one's sanity is gone they receive one random insanity effect from the "minor" insanity list. 70% to 90% gone replaces the minor effect with a moderate insanity effect. And 90% to 100% grants one with one of the extreme insanity effects.
- On that note, more insanity effects.
- And more cards =)
With some tweaking and a few creative ideas this game could be huge.
Also, the end game table seemed bugged. Only the final score on the bottom appeared. The values for everything else were "undef".
I hope this helps, and I most definitely will be looking forward to more of your stuff.
a couple of things, make an online version, add music, and make it so you can command monsters to attack
Nicely and simply done, got me going for about 2 hours, but i did notice 1 thing, there were times when i seem to get cards that were totally useless for the situation, eg. computer was at 1 hp and i couldnt get a single attack card for 8 turns, which lead to my failure. of course this depends on the luck factor, but a certain amount of control would be nice, eg. ability to choose cards to put in your deck, limited by maybe experience points or gold available, that would give added strategy to the game =)
i loved the game but saw some things i would like in the next one.
1. insanity drops to fast there meeds to be a reliable replenish system.
2. It would be nice to have some way to customize what cards you get in every game, so that you dont end up with 2 cards your not going to ever use cause u have a more powerfull one ( such as having 2 banish cards and a Sacraficial lamb).
3. there needs to be more of a veriety of cards there wernt enough monsteres and the computer always had a banish of sacraficial lamb to play so i never had anything protecting my life.
It still was an amazing game so 10/10 but just wanted to give some sugestions for the next one.
its kinda of bland i mean theres not much meat to the game you should have made it like the Magic the Gathering card game im giving you a 10\10 5\5 rateing mostly because Lovecraft is a big Pimp and i read the Necronomion not to long ago also im starting to read Alhazred the "Author" of the Necro. hes the one they talk about in the Necro. love the Book and like the game Great job
It was a bit simple, but that's how card games should be. Nice work.
This game is pure win in my opinion. I kept me entertained for a very long while and I foresee that I shall play it again when I have more time to kill. I love the whole Cthulhu Mythos theme especially. The only thing that I would have enjoyed more would be a nicer ending. Perhaps a nice ending graphic of some sort for finishing the game would spice things up.
Hopefully we shall be graced with more Lovecraft - themed material from you in the near future. Good work. :)
i really enjoy hentai ,gore, killing, war, and anything that has stradegy u had most so really liked it!
Very good but is it just me or the computer seems to pull the right cards out of its arse on later stages instead of a random draw. Also whats up with scizhophrenia it is supposed to be a burden for running out of sanity but it can randomly boost your stats. I dont know anyone with a mental illness who gains strength from it. Sorry for those critisims its a very good game and a tribute to HP Lovecraft.
Was very fun and addictive card game. Don't exactly know how to improve it, but I definitely tell it can be. Fun though, especially since I've never heard of this card game and it was cool learning something new (Love the books though)
I'm not crazy about card games, however this one did keep me occupied for at least 30 mins. I am also a big Lovecraft fan so that was a plus
It's cool but could be a bit better.. If u could add more % of a chance to get a good card.. instead of the enemy... Because it sucks than.. Anyway Great game :).. ADDICTING >:P.
i wish this was a real card game, it was really fun, cept i suck at it
i havent really read any of lovecraft's books but i love evil dead and the necronomicon is there, maybe im going to read something i dont know
good fairly complex but needs a discard or something like it because many times i would get worthless cards that i wanted to discard for better ones otherwise fun and well done with cool graphics
This game is really nice.
The gameplay is excellent.
The Card effect are not abusive or too weak
The Sound effect are cool.
welcomechallenge: It is a real game card
An amazing game. I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys strategy card games AND the terrifying lore of H.P. Lovecraft. I remain stunned by the quality of this game.
Perhaps a multi-player function. Or a deck builder with packs. Something that could give you that one last point. Congratulations! This is an amazing game.
I love Lovecraft :D
And now somebody have made a sweet card game :D
Hell yeah !
Just some additions that would be nice, A life counter showing your Current/Max life instead of just current. A display of points needed to gain a level. And of course new cards always add to a game but that's what a Sequel is for. Other then that Great job.
I tend to get obsessed over decent card games, and I have been playing this one for quite a while now (and I do not intend to stop any time soon, lol).
The presentation is crisp, the cards are realistic, the modifiers are simple to understand yet have a strong impact on the gameplay, and the theme is unified and interesting. I see no problems in this epic card game.
I'd also love for you to make it multiplayer, but I'd rather have no multiplayer at all than a multiplayer that's buggy and utterly baffling. Take your time. ^_^
In all seriousness, I don't really care that you can't pick your cards. I'd mess up my deck anyways. Hah. Go me.
I've already recommended this game to two people and sent it to one. If this was a free game download, I would get it in a heartbeat. It's pretty and has more than enough cards to make me happy.
And the "score bad and you can fall behind"? Yeeeeeah. Behind. 4 levels behind. Again, hah. Go me. But I still play, and that's all that matters.
~Piewithpancakes
That was truly a great game, add some multiplayer, or even keep it single player and just add a Deck buildier, with a bunch of different cards. That was just a awsome game!
I would say I liked it in general but it had a few problems, one the A.I. was painfully stupid, I played games where I saw, using stakeout, that it could have won, but decided not to. Also going insane wasn't really all that bad, you could summon anything with impunity and some effects were almost a boon. Schizophrenia could be helpful sometimes, and megalomania could end a game really quick if you got a "attack" card. Also, I feel that this would have been better as a monster centered card game. you killed your oponent through the damage spell cards, not monsters. Shoggoth was really next to useless and xenophobia really didn't hurt at all. Though I certainly did enjoy playing it I would apreciate if the enemy got a bit better and it felt more skill based than luck based.
I have been playing this all day and it's a lot of fun. Good stylish graphics, game play is addicting, and it isn't super easy. Thanks for the good work.
i agree with cbass on all his points but id also like to add more of a storyline element as well as some form of deck editing instead of just automatically having cards "added" to your deck. (even though you have no idea which cards you have and they just suddenly appear). i feel that if you had a deck editing system as well as a way to pick and choose cards you received also a way to buy or otherwise earn cards it would improve the game play a lot. a storyline would be a plus but not as necessary so long as you can see and choose your opponents that you fight.
overall
storyline
deck editing
card earning
lving up should have an affect of some kind
are ways to improve it.
aside from that i loved the game, interesting cards with net effects, reasons to avoid insanity, the leveling system (although it didnt really affect anything). yea but overall really good game
nice.. but i get a very strong feel that the CPU have a clear advantage in card selection. Too many times i have seen the BEST cards thrown my way, whit me having a lot of nothing.
so it was fun early, until i was fed up with getting mashed by uber cards over and over and over again.
play aggressively. Very aggresively. Defenses are weak; dispel destroys it all at low cost. Attack at all and any opportunity. Sanity is unimportant, waste it.
Summons are just.. not usefull. They can be used as some sort of defense, and sometime they counter attacks.. but meh. More of a liability than anything else.
advantages are rarely kept for long, sometimes advantages can be turned against you. use it as fast as you can, and expect to lose it the next turn. Turtling wont win you that game.
Keep anti-taint card ready, wou will get it often, the ennemy will too, but not for long usually.
Losing all sanity have little disadvantage. Really. Sanity is overrated. So far, whatever debuff it gave, it wasnt even close to be as anoying as the uber cards thrown our way.
Nice flavor with cthullu, i dont know much about it except that people get crazy and we get to gun down cultists. kill the guys with book first.. apparently.
nice, simple system. I wish we could read our card without having to click on them.
I would have to agree with the points that Super Monkey and cbass have made. In all honesty I would love to see this game made into a game for the nintendo ds because its very interesting and has a lot of potiental to be great. Very nice job, I do hope you make the changes that they suggested and release it again or version 2.
it wasnt explained well in the "how to play" section or w.e. its called
so i kinda learned on the fly.
i found the creatures to be silly and pointless they seemed to attack whenever they wanted?
and sometimes taint confused me
deck editing would be cool :D
It reminds me of the card game Magic or the online game UrbanRivals. It is really cool, and I enjoyed it. Could use some sound besides the attacks though, just something subtle. It does get too quiet
sweet game. cards are awesome.
YAY Lovercraft mythos game HOORAH!!!!!!
fun game liked all the extra stuff that plays parts in the battle ie the elder sign taint arcane and sanity. Try to add the ability to build ur own deck out of the cards u have cause that would add some personality to ur deck and make ppl feel the wins and loses more if that makes ne since. Besides the addition of that not much else u could add...nice game.
Awesome! We need more cool Mythos Flash games! :D I think it maybe could use some work, with balancing the cards and stuff...and it would probably be better if you were able to use art you had the rights to...but all in all I enjoy it.
I loved this game. I can't think of anything to criticize.
The game itself reminds of 13 Warriors (but without the cheesy pseudo fighting movements, thank god). I think an interesting idea, once you get more experience, would be to have a store where you can spend points, as well as a high score board, so people can choose between exploring all of the cards and going for #1 on the board. Also, a customizable deck would be really really cool.
The rank system didn't seem to affect me all that much. Of course it affects what cards you get, but in terms of difficulty, not that big a deal. There was one match where I was two levels below the computer, beat him, and then gained two levels. I hit level twenty as I was going into match 18. I like card games in general, but the amount of work you put into this shows, and it's one of the best games I've seen on front page in a long time. Thank you for making this game.
My three favorite cards were:
Mad Experiment
Yog-Sothoth
and City of R'lyeh
I remember one match I opened up with Yog-Sothoth, dealt 35 damage, then went megalomaniac(my favorite of all the insanity conditions) and started to tear him up. Here were my final stats:
Highest Arcane: 35
Highest Elder Sign: 19
Highest Taint: 35
Best Attack: 45
Total High Score: 1802
I can't congratulate you enough on such an awesome debut here on Newgrounds; I think you'll get daily feature for sure. If this is your first submission, I can't wait to see your next!
(P.S. Is this a real card game? If it is, I'm gonna have to go out and spend more money. Sigh.....)
Mixed feelings from me. It's not perfect, but I haven't played many games like this, so I don't have much to compare it to. I feel like I can't say I'm overwhelmingly impressed with how it plays, but it's fun. It DID keep me up an hour later than I wanted to stay up. And you picked an awesome theme.
with tremendous room for a sequel.
I would love to see some better card variety, at times it seemed like i had the same hand as my opponent.
If you are at a lower level than your opponent, you should receive more points if you beat them. This way it makes it easier for the player to catch up, instead of always being one level lower for what seems like an eternity
Cards should be awarded more frequently. Also it would be a cool idea to show a few cards face down and allow the player to pick one at random to add to his or her deck.
A deck building feature would also be cool. At the bare minimum allow the player to view the cards in his or her deck. This way the player can create strategies and combos based on their cards, as well as offer a more intimate feel instead of just having a deck and not knowing what the hell is in it.
Follow these tips and some of the others that reviewers have posted, and you will have yourself a sequel that will easily surpass the original.
Great game over all but i think the cards should be balanced a little bit better. The card that did damage and then wiped made you go insane....actually did it literally. Some of those effects slowed down the game soooo much it was giving me a headache. Other than that great game, you should add more cards too very fun.
super awsome best game ever please make more
After a while when i kept winning the health wouldn't display, it was too easy and i didn't get any more new cards and opponents didn't get harder all i'm saying is maybe
look into it
Liked the Fantasy Flight artwork, reminded me of playing Arkham Horror, nicely used
beautiful game would it be possible to download it so i can play it offline too?
and hopefully one day well be able to play multi player.
without being to make your own deck this game is completely random. and half stupid.
this was a lot of fun, though i died at level six. oh well, i still had fun. ^_^
Had some good runs on the game, though I would have liked some kind of arena mode instead of a tounament mode. A mode that unlocks all cards from the begining.
Nice and fun game, graphics and sounds are all well done, but the inability to make your own deck makes the game too random. You lose, or fall behind in ranks simply because you have a ton of shotguns in your deck and the opponent buffs himself to 15 arcane and you don't draw a dispel or anything that could help.
Make it possible to modify your deck and it's awesome.
A nicely done game except a few errors,
"Raid" card is not working properly sometimes, its not giving any damage and being absorbed by enemy's shield despite its writing "IGNORES invulnerability" on it, also the "Betrayed" Card is not working, its not giving any +Arcane damage.
It was a nice and thrilling piece of card game.
Good work !
I really enjoyed this game, though it has some flaws
Most notably, there's a real shortage of cards. you start to see the same ones over and over again, pretty quickly. I'd suggest doing a sequel with a lot more cards
My other problems, may not be your fault. I'm not sure how much of this is just direct translation of the card game into flash, but personally, I feel the hand size of 5 is too small. I think it'd be better as 7.
Secondly, the sanity effects don't seem negative enough. Schizophrenia, especially, seems to help more than it hinders, and avoiding insanity doesn't really feel worth the effort.
But make a sequel with more cards, please. I enjoyed this nevertheless.
its basically maganic wars with a few things missing and a much darker style
but its still great
to elothran:
raid doesnt ignore invulnerability it ignore the green star (shield) whatever its called. NOTHING IGNORES INVULNERABILITY, otherwise it wouldnt be invulnerability
the betrayed card works fine, but when you calculate damage you have to factor in your arcane as well as your opponents shield/green star, whatever its called
Man a good fair game good way to kill some time im up to level 13 and ill try and get to level 20 with a bit more work u could make a good game great like inline play make your own decks maby change the saves to each 2 games then 3 then it sould be a great game keep it up man your doing well
Nice game!
I second the request for an arena mode. Possibly with the option to pick your and the computer's rank freely, and a score modifier based on the difference in ranks.
PvP would be cool too, of course!
Unlike some of the previous reviewers, I think deck construction should NOT be a part of this game. If it were, some cards would never be taken at all (e.g. Shotgun).
Also, I noticed that Taints from multiple cards do not stack, but the Taints from Megalomania do. Is it supposed to be like that?
Anything else..?
A Card Galery would be nice. Possibly even a full set of cards and rules as a PDF download?
Great game, but I encountered a little bug...
When you lose a game just before autosaving, it still saves the game - and you can start playing the next level by loading that game, even tough you lost the level before (with, of course, falling behind a level).
I agree as well that variety in cards should be greater from the beginning, either by adding a "quickplay"-"arena" mode or by simply having more cards...
Other than that, great game (even if i've never liked the cthulhu theme before)
Awesome game. Played probably 7-8 times. Got to level 9 twice. Last play, I had him below 10, 3 different times and kept getting screwed on cards and he finally killed me. I've probably been playing it for 3 hours. So to say the least it was great. Very aggravating at times, lol. An awesome game though.
This was a great idea and an awesome execution. I had a whole lot of fun playing it! Good work!
great game u have done good this is one of the best games ive eva played
i just love games like this!!!
As d34d-3y3 said, the inability to create your own deck makes the game too random. Deck building allows one to create powerful synergies, which you can only get with pure luck here. Sometimes you completely blow your opponent away while hardly loosing any life. Sometimes he ends up with 1 hit point and you're stuck for ages waiting for a direct damage card. Sometimes you get megalomania (i think that's what the insanity which gives you 5 AP and taint per round is called) but you don't get any damage cards and can't do anything but look at how your hit points decay at an ever increasing rate (and the opponent finishes you off).
Other than that, it seems that if you lose a level after which an auto save is supposed to occur, you can load the game and play the next level as if nothing had happened.
Great game, but you need to fix it up a bit.
1) The game works as having an equal enemy each level. But if you leave the game and load it at a later time, you get an enemy that is 1 level stronger then you. For example: I play until lvl 3, beat it so I am a lvl 4 and I leave the game. I come back later and I start fighting a Lvl 4 but I am a lvl 3.....
2) I would fix the losing insanity part. Megalomania is a huge advantage. If you have a 14 damage + extra card and megalomania gives you 10 extra after 2 turns, your doing 24 damage, it's insane.
Other then that good game.
i love this. i just wish it were more like a TCG and less like rock paper scissors kind thing where its one card and one card
it seems like "remove taint" should be an offensive card played on opponent that makes it difficult to sit down.
very cool, played it until the end. wished the animations were a little faster.
It is a good variation of the known Maganic Wars, but due to the lack of deck editing options and poor AI (seriously, by using hand reveal we could easily see some moves were completely random and very bad), it's hard to consider any good tactic when playing the game. It was basically random luck moves with completely unfair cards every once in a while.
One good thing is that the game has a fairly easy learning curve, but the lack of any strategy further then knowing what to play when the time is right (which is something you learn after 5 minutes), makes the game extremelly repetitive and 100% luck based.
The entire game -could- be just a fun way to learn the rules. From that point on the game could easily become a wonderful online TCG. Unfortunately since its nothing more then the 20 levels (sorry I did not count how many it took to beat the game) and an unrewarding statistic screen, this game only gets a 6 out of 10.
Too easy but am a cthulhu's fan.
The precedent comment was true.
Honestly, the entire game is on how lucky you get. Also, it's really stupid that the AI opponent can pull w/e card it wants out of its ass, rather than having a real hand. Every single time I tried to do a sanity drain, it pulled Arkham after Arkham, every time I tried to taint, he'd pull the "your taints gone, opponent takes two taint" card. And discreet doctor after discreet doctor, any time I pulled out a good monster the computer would do sacrificial lamb. Totally took the fun out of the game.
I liked this game. The only problems i had with it is the speed it plays at, its very slow and kinda drags. I also found this odd glitch where i refreshed the game so it went back to the main menu, i hit load game and for some reason i was suddenly level 20 with 135 health and all my opponants had like 6 health. maybe you want to look into that. So maybe add a speed control and a return to main menu button
Like penalties for casting when you don't have the requisite sanity or arcane points to lose, and saving after each level. I can't count the number of times i lost before i could even save at all.
on one part it won't show my opponents health or my health
and every time i win a battle the new card thats always added to my deck is Blackmail! Fix it please!
Chaoese
i found it to be quite interesting compared to most NG card games.
i liked it
A very cool concept with some pretty decent gameplay however there are a couple glitches, i found that when my opponent went insane it would often help them more than it would hurt them and a few others, but in general this was quite a bit of fun to play and i hope that you can someday make another.
Good game for those who enjoy these types.
I don't see a purpose in leveling up however, when no matter WHAT... the opponent is always equal to you, and always seems to get JUST the cards they need to destroy you. Played through to Elder Deep One, lost 8 times, got tired of it. But I can;t attribute my personal likes to your styling. 5/5 for your crativity and the style of the game. Im sure people who like Card Battle games will enjoy it.
Good effort, but card / yu gi oh kind of games are not my cup of tea. This just wasn't fun.
I find this game was made up of the following events:
1. Contained no immagination whatsoever
2. A horrible idea from the start
3. Even the ORIGINAL author had no immagination for this, and this guy just made it worse
I'd have to say this should be blammed. Sorry man, but this was total shit.
i loved it. But uhm, the two users commenting below me dont make sense.
-thewhitenuckle-
he blammed the game and said it sucked and rated it an 8.. explain plx :3
-matthew1222222222 wtf too many 2s-
damnit if u dont like these types of games dont rate them.
'its not my cup of tea. I dont like these types so ill blam it into the ground'
dumbasses Dx
anyways I liked it :)
This was great. I'd love to see something like this as a real TCG, expanding through different horror series. The only real thing I'd like added to this game would be the ability to make decks.
Great job, this had the perfect mix of challenging and entertaining. I'm a huge Lovecraft fan already, so this one already has a special place in the place where my heart would be if I'd never read Lovecraft. Excellent work.
Iam a huge Chtulhu mythos and Lovecraft fan. Cool designed game
A few tings about the gameplay:
Monstercards are not powerful enough, because the are affected by elder signs.
Why use shogoth, rarly i had the chance to make Damage with them.
You could make the monstercards do damage everytime, and not only if attacked. No real or minor reason to play monster at the moment(with the expetion of the one removing your taint/and the Woodthing you get later). Make more Monster cards or give the Monstercards additional abillitys.
Insanity is at start a pain. In the end, in the endgame i just went insane to get the benefits(R`ley/Yog-Shogoth). Megalomania is too powerfull. Having the right cards and you instantly can win (Hastur/Old One) to remove the taint. And a few Arcane Spells to blast the enemy. "Curse of Cuthulhu" the "shotgun blast" "Machine gun" "Raid" are a totall waste in the end , boost them somehow (Insanity is not a bad thing at the moment).
Megalomania: Too powerful in the end. I really win the game if i have it early.
Xenophobia: Doesnt affect the game, because monsters are to weak at the moment. if i have 90 Hp, why should i care if a moster takes 1 Hp or makes additional 1-2 damage. You get the point.
Agoraphobia: Bad! the only thing i dont want to get
Schizophrenie: Doesnt affect my gameplay. Loosing 5 points every turn would be better.
It is about time someone made a game based off of H.P Lovecraft's stories
first off, i've gotta say i've always loved the cthulhu mythos. good, genuinely terrifying stuff. and having read a lot of h.p. lovecraft and played the call of cthulhu game series, this is a pretty damn good first shot at a TCG.
note that i said a pretty damn good first shot. it was a good rough draft. there are a few issues to be addressed, but they mainly stem around the overly simplistic nature of the game.
by making it really simple, it's easy to pick up and play, i know. but it also leaves far too much up to the whims of fate. i can make it to level 10 on one game, and not beat the first battle the next. the (at least seemingly) random nature of the cards only allows for limited strategy. i found my strategy usually started with buffing with whatever i had, and ended with praying that i got the type of card i needed (healing, direct attack, etc.). only controlling one creature that only attacks when you suffer a direct attack seems useless, and the limited creatures doesn't really do the mythos justice.
i know that making the system more complicated somewhat defeats the purpose of a flash game, but infuriating the players by ripping all control away from them isn't that great either.
7/10. good first try, and i'll be looking forward to another one, hopefully with some of these issues resolved. but hey, what do i know? i don't program flash.
...this is a type of game that most shy away from making because of the myriad amount of detail that entails such a project,....that said,...this is frikkin awesome and the efoort shows but you need to improve it some if ya came this far,...a save or password save style system is a must,...and more history on the cards and why the heck the player wants to duel aside from being bored. Tks for your time.
i like the game but it had a flaw or two, everytime i played a card the pc either counte that turn or had a better version of it and used it. i didnt win once and i played 10 times
I disliked it. Couldn't really get into it. Everything is so random, and there's little to know strategy used whatsoever. Well, there IS, but that's based on what cards you get. I've played table top card games and online card games, and I know you can't do much with flash in this area, but man. It's terrible. You can't build any decks, you're just GIVEN whatever amount of cards. And your opponent shares them too. Great.
Your strategy is solely to use whatever you got to the best of your advantage. Well, that's what ALL card games do. Not to mention the random factor. Except, well, it's far too random. And opponents get some of the most damaging, healing, and Über cards one after another. Hell, I've only played it twice and still got to experience a dry game where I got virtually nothing, and lost. Then I quit.
Sorry, but it really doesn't captivate me. The leveling thing I didn't like, the incredibly random system in favor of the opponent, ungh. Maybe next time on another game. Hope to see better, cuz this just isn't for me.
It would be greater if you could make your own deck. if you make a sequal, then make that feature.
You've succeeded in keeping the mood, and I didn't notice any bugs, so good game. The insanities were well made. Randomness is probably an issue to some people. On one hand, it's possible to lose multiple times in a row without doing anything wrong, but on the other hand, it's part of the genre. I suggest that if you make another one give some options to reduce randomness, like removing some cards that instantly make both players go insane.
Great card game and it's based on the mighty Cthulhu myth. I simply have to give this a 10!
lol I've noticed people don't really enjoy this, because of how they can't get past the first few levels, but I found the major thing in this game is to kill the opponent as fast as possible to gain the most levels, and I completely understand why computers always get the best stuff, it's like that in all video games, computers should always be given the upper hand or else the game is too easy, i.e in pokemon the opponent has more health even if it's a worse pokemon at a lower level, has no limit on any of the PP (pokemon power, it's kind of the attacks vitality) and somehow the person who controls him always has the greatest healing items... WTF that makes no sense... oh but it does, computers as a rule are no match for the human mentality, given the human isn't retarded, so I completely understand why you did that and I congratulate you on a jorb well done
it is really ausome. i liked how you start out as a regular "bad guy" and then eventually become some kind of demonic overlord.
Kudos on incorporating Cthulhu into a game. It's good to see a game that has a basis in some real literature.
the whole sanity idea was great, because i wouldnt have beaten it with out megalomania, and over all its a great game. could have used a cthulhu summon card if you beat the game or somethig. but the load game is still messed up, badly, it makes an endless game of no rank, no health, no extra card like the "hound"card. but as i said awesome game."Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn"
love card games but you could have made it easyer to under stand and alittle bit easyer oo well still awsome man good job
Eh... too much like the whole pokemon thing but i mean its good for what it is thoe... i you like things like this but for me just not too interesting :(
Though a bit slow, the game itself is good. Although my opponent was always better than me in respects to rank and variety of cards, a good bit of luck allowed me to win most of my matches.
great job with this game it kicks ass
graphics could have been a bit better, and also, it would be realy cool to have a tutorial thing, instead of a instruction page. sanity was a cool idea :D.
...but it's also boring because it's a card game...
game plays simple
its addictive and there are many interesting cards from dark rituals to raids
keep up the good work
You need to be able to save after every level that is completed. Cannot imagine why you did it every three, but otherwise a great game.
It's a good game, but its soooo obvious that the computer player sees AND decides to place their card AFTER seeing yours.
I've had numerous occasions where I had placed a pure damage card only to be retorted by a healing card. I place a monster, it's banished the same turn. I taint the opponent, the same turn the opponent cures the taint. I buff up my defense and arcane (0 and 0), and once its placed it is removed that same turn.
Beyond the fact that the opponent cheats, it's a bit ridiculous to make it so you HAVE to get a good score in order to survive later rounds.
I think it is a new direction in card games, when you don't have to make your desks, but have to play with "what you have". Personnaly I liked it =)
But animation is really slow, which makes game too boring to play... (
Althought I want suggest you leveling system not only in life points, but also with starting arcane power\elder signs.
After playing your game I've been wanting to read Necromicon ;)
It was a nice game although it did start to get boring after a few matches. I liked the concept of using up your sanity since its very original but overall it didn't seem challenging enough. I was always a rank higher then my opponent and after about 10 matches before I quit I won every one, even at a disadvantage, so it got boring a little fast.
Usually i dont play card games on the computer at all, but this seemed to be an exception. I think you did a nice job with this, love the theme of the mythos and lovecraftian stuff...i agree with other reviews saying that itd be great if you could build your own deck and such. in any ways i enjoyed playing the game, and i like how you included a lot of different aspects like the taint, eldar signs, going insane and all that fun stuff.
if you do ever make it so players can make their own decks definatly limit certain things, like base it on a point system so people dont just put all the best cards into their deck. i digress: fine game, i enjoyed it, id like to see more from you.
Best card game I played on newgrounds. Pay no heed to reviews like luridShadow, if card games bore you, why the hell do you play one?
Did magic the gathering come up with the card "Dark Ritual" first? Anyways, this is pretty good for a flash card game and you don't have to pay for digital cards unlike some other flash game on here *cough**Ederon**cough*
The fact that I am a lovecraft reader and a card collector makes this game a flame mignon of computer gaming!
I only gave you a nine because of a few minor things (remember, Metal Gear Solid 4 got a nine out of ten too!). First, the tutorial wasn't very clear on how to initiate a move. Second, the A.I. sometimes seemed like it was giving up the game.
Improve the A.I., make a more detailed tutorial, and add some multiplayer mayhem, and your spot on Flash portal is secured.
simple and great
I was a little worried when I saw a Cthulu game. I'm usually very disappointed in them. You did the genre proud though. I like the music, the art (even if its not yours), and the game play in general. Lots of fun and good job. I look forward to playing more of your games.
You have created a fun game that any HP Lovecraft fan - or anyone else - can enjoy, all while also teaching the nuances of the Call of Cthulhu card game without making me spend money. I, therefore, award you the Shining Trapezohedron Award for incredible insanity. And here is your million dollars.
*Hits screen with hand a couple times*
Ow. Okay, ummm... I'll give you a million dollars once I perfect the E-Fist and get back to you later. Thanks for making this game!
it was a great game! acctually the funniest card game i ever played but there was some glitches that made the opponents life dissapear and that u like beginn with 135 hp i dun no if ur supposed to begin with 135 hp but ANYWAAAAY... it Was The best cardgame i ever played
Overall an outstanding game, though the system of leveling up was a little shaky. Seemed like I was always 2 or 3 levels behind my opponent as it went on. Also, the game auto saves and you get to go to the next level, win or lose.
I loved it! It reminded me magic cards. You should make a sequel with more cards.
I enjoyed playing this game and in fact, was obsessively trying to win for several hours. I do have one question though: How many ranks are there possible to earn? I know I played against 20 levels, so are there also 20 ranks, or are there more?
Srsly? This has phrases like "Shub-Niggurath" and "Remove your taint"? Does anyone want to give this guy a tour of the english language? ...lul
Anyway... "taint" effects should stack. Also, try making the opponents harder rather than upping the life each level. It just makes the game longer and sometimes it gets boring...
All-in-all it was enjoyable and a fun card game. Lots of different strategies to win. Player vs player would've been better than Player vs CPU though.
I noticed you used a few sound effects from Nethergate (unless it's public domain).
The game concept was fun and relatively balanced but I don't like the insanity system. Most of it involves random stats changes which is more blessing than curse. (Hell, some of them even increase your life) At higher levels, I won by spamming those cards that take huge chunks off your sanity to get the insanity "bonus" stats change. Insanity should be a sure handicap, not help in my opinion.
This game makes me seriously miss Magic. I wanna play that shit bad now! Damn you! haha
Nice fun flash card game, kinda like MTG, but just a few flaws:
- There should be some way you can either discard a card or pass your turn. Many times during the game, I was forced to play a card that basically didn't do anything because all my cards I either wanted to save until later or weren't useful at all.
- Deck Building. If you could put this into the game, it would make it a lot more strategic and add a whole new dimension of gameplay.
- Different insanity effects. The ones that were offered sometimes helped me in besting my opponent so if you could make them 100% harmful, it would add to the challenge.
- Once you run out of a certain attribute (sanity, arcane, defense, etc.) you shouldn't be able to use cards that cost X amount of said attribute. It makes the game less challenging and it cheapens the importance of the attributes.
- Player vs. Player combat. This is really a off-shoot of the deck building, but if the players could fight against each other, it would really be cool.
- More card selection. At this point, this is just a nitpick, but the adding new cards system was pretty cool, if you could add a new card every level that would be an improvement.
Sorry if this is a long read, but i really like this game and i'm just throwing some advice out there that may help make it better. Overall, it was a good start and i hope that you keep at it and keep up the good work!
Hands down the best card game I've ever played on Newgrounds. One sugestion (a request actually): a discard option that gives you a point or two of sanity? And if (I hope) you do do a sequal let's see some extra insanity conditions! Going insane was fun! Once again great game!
i had been playing for a while got to lvl 18 and died so i click load game and suddenly me and the ai are both back to rank one but with all the cards that had been unlocked .
Hey, you made a really great game here. I just have a few suggestions, if you don't mind hearing them.
A) I noticed that once you beat a three level mark and the game autosaves, if you die during that fight, and load the file, the opponent is a level higherthan the original "autosaved" file. I don't know if you intended this as a challenge (which it was to me) and while it did add a certain level of challenge, near the end of the game (if it happened too many times) it just made a gulf of levels between me an the opponent, like as in a 4 level difference, which made the game incredibly tricky.
B) I'll have to agree with some of the other comments. While I think that multiplayer would be nice, I think a deckbuilding option with more cards available would be a higher priority on the list of additions, perhaps to a sequel?
Overall, I'll say you made a great game, it was a nice surprise when compared to the other games you find on NG. Keep up the great work! :D
blank
This game make me wanna play it all the time :) I really miss the deck building option but it's quite ok anyway. Gameplay is good and the game is addictive. That's two most important things in batlle card game ;) If I may I suggest that it would be nice to have more than one monster at one time. IMO monsters are really not important in this game and this should be changed. (Maybe except the Elder one which actually remove Your taint and builds up Your defense stat ^^). Monster attack/defend phase would be nice too but it is not MTG after all. One last thing. Raids, shotguns and tommy guns spoils the feeling of the game. I wuld change them for knife throws or some sacrificial daggers pushes ;) I would also add some dark and ambient music to improve atmosphere in the game. I give it 9/10 and waiting impatiently for Necronomicon 2 ;) Good work.
Anywas my final score was:
highest arcane: 35
highest elder sign: 28
highest taint: 20
highest attack: 47
number of times insane: 19
final total score: 2384
final rank: 20 - Yithian Scholar
If the computer wasn't such a cheating c*nt. Improvements? make the computer get less healing cards, especially when it is on the verge of crippling defeat.
I really really liked the game!! One thing that might be nice is when you can reveal the opponent's cards, you can see the cards bigger.
Kick ass. Much needed change of pace.
cool game not the best one the genre my fave one ever is maganic wars. but yeh only thing that annoyed me was u have to click on the card to see what it does it should be more clear so that u can choose it straight away.
My wifedoesn'tusually go for these types of games her's the zanga and teteriskind, but after she played a bit she's hooked. Great job!!!
Amazing job on the game kept me entertained for hours. A few small things that need to be worked on though. Like sometimes when the AI casts things to get out of insanity the effects from the insanity still stick for an extra turn or two. Otherwise really awesome job cant wait for more
As a fan of Lovecraft's stories, I really enjoyed this game alot. It's a great game that could be played forever. Once again, it's an excellent game.
Prety good for a combat card type game, just has the one problem I have with all of them, Loseing to the cmputer when it was 1 HP for 7 turns because I don't get a single attack card.
I expected a game based off Evil Dead.
I'm disappointed.
but could use less suck.
okay
This game was very much inspired, if not copied, from a game called "Maganic War"... Good but still almost stolen. At least give credit for the inspiration.
love the game i beat it hahaha
lol good game. i found a bug. if you load before you save then win the first fightyoul go to level 20 lol
try to fix that
I liked it! Goin' into faves, this is.
i love the game y not go online
The "steakout" card that lets you see your opponent's hand doesn't seem to have any strategic worth in the game, for now. I only got to level 9 and I'm sure there are other cards to earn, but since none of the preceding ones actually affect the opponents hand/ let you manipulate it, wasting a turn to see their cards becomes pointless.
The "blackmail" card could have been the cure to this minor detail, but since the opponent chooses the card to discard, this is not the case.
Other than that, the fact remains that I did enjoy the game for 9 levels worth, until I got killed. Great job at making it entertaining.
While I was playing, I brought the computer down to 0 sanity, and it was still pulling out cards that cost 4. This annoyed me a bit, since it made all cards that reduced the opponent's sanity.. well.. useless.
Great game though. Had a lot of fun.
general idea -marvelous
game balance - SUXXXX terribly,
healing cards are too numerous and are drawn too often,
spell attack cards are to few, cost little to nothing and can cut down health in one blow - such cards should cost 4 and more sanity, come very rare, or their effectivness should be greatly reduced (cards like Dark ritual, Hound of tintalos)
loosing sanity should disable casting high level cards, 0 sanity = no demanding spells.
Each turn a player should regain 1 sanity point, player should have possibility to skip turn and regain additional sanity point.
Why there are only 2 defence cards? there should be more.
shotgun, tommy gun and raid are IMBA- deal nice dmg for... nothing? they should come at the cost of loosing defence or arcane.
Sacrifice lamb is bullshit- regain 8 life, remove enemy creature at such pitiful cost? and should be, Sacrifice YOUR creature and regain life.
and finally give more "taint" cards, and some cards that would allow stealing enemy creatures and enemy arcane/defence points, more cards negating spell effects
the game was good but the computer always got the cards that did 14 damage
and i always got the 3 damage ,so ya
Very well thought out. Game play is awsome. Everything I like to see when it comes to a strategy card game.
Now I just cant wait for the mutiplayer!
this game is frikin awesome
I play magics now and then and I liked this game in principle, works pretty good expect for some annoying bugs..
I cant see the life counter of the enemy (i reloaded a few times but I just cant see it when it get below 10 I can see it.
I have alot of life. i start with like 135 life points, I dont know what the enemy has but without healing I can easily win with 100+ life left, this makes it less fun because I dont have to pay attention to spells and stuff, I dont care if I lose life.
i played like 10-15 pots and I only received the arcane +5 card every time
I did not grow in status I remained scholar
my own life counter disappeared now and then
after a match in the scoreboard often the won card won show, also what does NaN mean? also my life left wont show always.
sometimes the enemy dies at first attack.
and last; I understand how sanity is the price of cards but when comp hits zero or if I hit zero I can still play out costly cards. I read the part were is says that when youre insane random things will happen, but I didnt see him. a few times I reached zero but I ddint have the feeling it affected my game..
anyways pretty fun game, but it still needs some work
Most addicting! I don't know if there's a real card game like that but this was awesome. The only thing I can complain about is the varity of cards there really need to be some more. Oh yeah and this definitely needs a multiplaye, I hope you'll be able to do one :-)
The only REAL issue I had with this game was the fact that Taint cannot kill your opponent. I was put into various situations where I would go many turns without pulling a single direct damage card, so I couldn't kill my opponent at all. After a few turns, I was brought down to the same health as them, and either killed or gained a health card and got back in the game.
Also, health and direct damage cards are to extreme. Damage/Healing should be lowered, much below the teens. It makes Summons almost useless. Well, actually, they are useless if you have ANY amount of defense up. The Elder card is the only one I found useful.
I loved the concept, though. It just needs tweaking.
Pretty nice job none the less :]
Great game, but I'd like to be able to customize my deck. I didn't have any of the glitches that other people seemed to have. I think it'd be awesome if you did like a storymode or something, other then just "rank up, fight that guy".
havent seen any glitches. i too would like a deck-builder.
also, is there a list of cards anywhere? i jumped 3 levels from 17 to 20 and the game ended, so i dont know if i got to see all the cards
I found this game to be very wicked and fun to a degree. I actually didn't read the rules so I just assumed loosing your insanity was a bad thing at first so it was great fun finding out insanity is that bad.
Betrayal doesn't work if your opponent doesn't have a summon. The card, however, says it does summon's attack PLUS arcane. 0 + x is not 0. Either the description needs changing or the coding needs changing. I lost a game because of it.
7/10 because it's well-done and fun but I hate lovecraft so goddamn much.
Great game. Simple yet addictive with a good visual scheme and sounds.
Biggest problem is the computer is too "lucky". I'm still stuck on level 15 thanks to sheer luck of the draw. The computer has drawn a 10+ damage card on 6 turns in a row while I draw 4 creature cards in a row while being xenophobic. If the computer gets megalomania, it always has cards to remove taint and I've never seen schizophrenia do damage to the computer, but it never heals me. The computer can't get agrophobia apparently, while I get it more than any other insanity and it makes me lose. Lastly, anytime I get defense or arcane above 5, the computer immediately plays a dispel card, but I've seen the computer get into the mid-teens for both and never get a dispel card of my own.
Anyway, I like the game and I'm going to keep trying to finish it, but some fixes for the computer might be nice to make the game more strategic and less about complete luck.
There are some shit cards - stakeout. Why do i care about what cards he has? its not like i have an indepth strategy.
You cant make a deck. there is no real strategy. (which i can appreciate is damn hard to code) and the health scales up like mad.
105 health and my strongest card deals 15 damage.... what?
Arcane cards dont come up nearly often enough.
Arcane and defence should be the focal points of the game but i have... 4 cards to boost it up. and not by much either. Not to mention how easy it is for the computer to erase all the hard work by using a dispel card.
Its too based on luck.. there is no build up to the kill and its not particularly balanced.
But all that aside. I enjoyed it enough to play for about an hour.
IF you figure out how to code it, Advanced strategies, multiplayer, customisable decks are ALL fantastic ideas. I liked the game. liked the style but the annoyances got amplified the longer the game lasted
Sending this to your inbox too. Cos i think you need the feedback from a person who has spent FAR too much time playing these kind of games.
This game is freakin' COOL!
I love the card games but this is the best one.
It needs some mysterious background music but this is the best card game we ever played!
Not as scary as I would have liked it to be but, it was slightly true to the Call of chtullu CCG.
However, the mechanics could use a little balancing, because as the game stands it comes down to who draws the most burn. Which is a shame since there are several underdeveloped areas already in game that could make it much more strategic.
Taint is too weak
- can't kill an opponent
- effects don't stack rendering some cards blank during play (most notably curse of cthulhu)
Possible Fixs: let taint effects stack, change taint wiping effects to taint lowering effects, change taint damage to an additional cost for playing cards that cost sanity instead of damage that happens every turn
Creatures are too weak
- 5 creatures, 2 banish cards, one creature based damage card, and a madness that effects only creatures (Not counting Mad experiment, which can summon, and New Dawn (name?) which can banish). That's alot of design space for a mechanic that can be rendered irrelavent by defense, and only does damage in reaction to direct damage spells.
-3 of the 5 creatures have no additional effect, making them all but identical during gameplay
Possible fixs: add effects to all creatures (lower opponent's Def, Arc, up your stats like elder thing etc), have creatures attack every turn, defence lowers creature damage only if opponent controls a creature
Too many redundant card effects, that need to be balanced and differenciated
- zero sanity def ignoring damage spells need additional cost (loss of def or arcane in responce to more damage) or effects (lesser damage ups sanity slightly)
- plus health cards need to be balanced, just look at the cost vrs effect of descret doctor vrs Mi-Go Surgeon
- plus arcane effects could probably be removed as individual cards and added to other cards (creature cards perhaps)
- a few cards that are good ideas, but don't serve much purpose in the game (I'd rather have a better chance at pulling burn, then have stakeout in the rotation)
Game lacks dynamic interaction with stats
- an all but complete lack of cards or effects that lower def and arcane (dispel is godly some games and blank others, New dawn is useful but kills your stuff as well, and i guess Mi-Go Surgeon counts, but that's an additional cost, not a way to effect your opponents arcane)
- very little interaction with sanity, which can really sting if you get stuck with a bad madness
Anyway, my two cents. Feel free to ignore them. Enjoyed your game, and overall i applaud your good work. If you're not done with this bad boy, then feel free to take these suggestion and observations under advisement.
Loved the game! I got to level 20 before I beat them all :P
Would love if you can make it multiplayer and such.
And consider the fixes the others are posting below me, they have good ideas :D
Overall 10/10
One of the best card based games that i've played on Newgrounds.
Not to say that it was perfect.
It took to long to get the damage cards needed for the higher level bots. I get that the cards had to be made so that when you start you don't easily wipe the opponent but getting a son of a bitch with 75 health down just using things like the head explody card was fuckin annoying.
Another thing that bothered me was how the taint didn't stack and how hard it was to mass arcane (red rune) points with only 1 or 2 cards that actually increased it but how easy it was to get the points erased by dispel.
I loved the idea of a cthulhu game and this one was solid, good job
Very good, though I (aling with everyone else here) would like to create my deck in the sequel, and I would have liked to know where the quotes on the cards come from, just curious. Besides that, the game is solid with a very innovative sanity meter and great art.
this game is fucking addicting like Yu Gi Oh! i played it and started swearing and hitting my desk when i lost (just like Yu Gi Oh!) Very cool! Favorite!
You did an amazing job with this. I actually liked playing this more than Magic, my (now previous) favorite card game. I found it to be well-balanced, and the random insanity effects gave you that significant chance (Please, oh elder gods, let me not be struck with agoraphobia once more!) between salvation and demise to really give it the Cthulhu feel.
The only card that really struck me as a pain in and of itself was doppelganger, just because the computer always seemed to manage to pull it out right before the last stage of my master plan. Once again, though, it kept me on edge and sucked into the game, so I wouldn't have it any other way.
I especially loved how often my strategies changed depending on circumstances. Do I want to drive my opponent insane? Do I want to drive -myself- insane? Do I beef up my Arcane once more to finish my opponent off and risk him dispelling me again? I changed general strategies as I progressed and I still had to plan on the fly every round.
So, for not only making one of the most enjoyable games I've ever played, but also making it fit seamlessly into the Cthulhu mythos in the process, I can only give this game a 10 out of 10. I'm definitely hoping to see more from you, so keep up the great work.
And since you mentioned wanting a highscore board, let's see if we can get some scores out in the open to see how people did.
Highest Arcane: 40
Highest Elder Sign: 12
Highest Taint: 25
Highest Attack:53
Number of Times Insane:10
Final High Score: 2135
I usually hate card games, but this one got me hooked.
Deck building and multiplayer would make it perfect, btw.
I cant lie when i was in high school i was into the whole yugioh/magic thing and i grew out of it. But this game brought back some memories lol im making this a fave
The only thing I would add to this game would be a deck editer. Other then that it's great.
awesome game!
Man, it's been quite a while since I've played any card games, and this brought back some memories. It really is a good game and I would love to see a sequal in the future with more cards, features, etc. Keep it simple though, one great thing about this game was the rules were easy to pick up and play.
fun.
sweetest thing on the web! I play alot of card games but this is amazing!
It was good, but I kept running into a problem. I summoned a shoggoth (sp) and even when my opponents defense was down the stupid thing would not hurt him. Also my taint would go over 2, but no matter what I tried I couldn't get my opponents taint over 2.
Other then that I enjoyed the game style, paying for cards with sanity then getting a random mental condition when you ran out.
I always like it when people make some battle cards flash games. Thanks!
But why does it end after Lv 20 ?
And, I too, think one should be able to make one's own deck.
It was fun, needed a self save and let you build your own deck, and skill was in some cases a nonfactor (for example, I got tainted and only drew monster cards while my opponent got healing cards. I didn't hurt him, he ended with full health). But I love card games.
There is a bug that when your monster retaliates it has to do more damage than your opponents armor and your armor combined. You need to fix this, I don't think their monsters have that problem.
Your game is pretty good. In general I don't play card games, but this one got me hooked for a pretty long time. You should consider adding an option to make customised deck. It would be nice to gain money and have the option to buy or sell cards. You could also make a map or something like this to show the progression between the level. Something that show you your opponents.
I hope you make a sequel to this game!
i love the game the only problems i had was eventually my monster stopped doing damage eventually regardless of armor, and after megalomania left arcane doesnt return to what it was but rather it returns to zero. if these were intended it's fine i guess but just thought i should mention them
Final score: 1879
You know your not having a good day when the recap at the end of a fight shows that you did 328 damage to you opponent because of the sheer amount of health they gained from schizophrenia... I agree with previous sentiments that taint should be able to stack, by about the fifth level the Curse of Cthulu card was useless.
not my kinda game, but it was well done.
Kudos to you dude! This is by far the best Cthulhu mythos game I've played. Awesome use of sanity; I was skeptical at first, but after going insane a couple of times i realized how much of an affect it has on the game.
is ther a down load version i can have! never played battle card games but i like that one. Dude you rocked that one
Lol - Cthulhu Mythos? You mean Cthol Murgos LOL?!
"Cthol Murgos" is a fictional country in the fantasy book series The Belgariad and The Malloreon by David Eddings.
Lol - but I like your spinoff anyway.
Pretty decent game, I like it - PLAY IT FTW!
I see what you mean, Xun lol!
The game also seems to spin off from the demon battling that was done by Polgara, Chabat, Belgarath, and Belgarion.
never expected to see this game, gotta show it to my friend!
Little info
~The Necronomicon is a fictional book appearing in the stories by horror novelist H. P. Lovecraft.
~The Cthulhu Mythos is a shared universe created in the 1920s by American horror writer H. P. Lovecraft.
~Cthulhu is an enormous fictional creature, one of the Great Old Ones in H. P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos.
It was really fun and well made game. The rules, different monsters, and powers made for a very well rounded card game that didn't get boring! It's nice to see such a creative and strategic game that works so well. I also loved the Lovecraftian theme, rare you see much when it comes to that, let alone something so well made. Kudos for such a fun game.
I played ofr like an hour it is so good ... it re minded me of this game i have from italy called " The Arcane Redemption" (that would be translated) but really it is cool you should consider haveing it made into a real card game i am sure it would sale very well
awsome game! I have a love-hate relationship with lovecraft- it scares me to death but I can't stop reading it!!! and this game is no different. it's 2 am and I have to work in 5 hours, and I've been up playing this game. well, the game doesn't scare me to death, its just too fun! one of the best call of cthulhu games I've seen.
yay! lol for the exploding heads!
but could you create an option to make the game go faster?
the way the cards appear at the start of every round, and the pauses between each action should be dealt with.
This is an overwhelmingly intense game, and as this quickly bacame apparent to me as I played I began to notice that dark chill creep forth.
With only a few minor tech mishaps, such as speed of gameplay and lack of multiplayer, this is a gem among the indie rough. The sound in this project was certainly impressive, but the use of sanity-incorporated gameplay is implemented so well here its astonishing that other Cthulhu games haven't found such an intuitive (and disturbing!!) route.
A few more sanity effects would be nice, and possibly mutiplayer as soon as possible could be just what is needed to propell this game exponetially forward.
Excellent work!
I've also interested of the H.P. Lovecraft's world in the last couple of years and the game is really entertaining with multiple ways to advance and fulfills it's purpose nicely.
The only thing I didn't like were the way insanity worked because the limitation on using 2 cards or a summon were quite nice penalties while schitzophrenia can easily give some more health and elder signs for protection and some arcane to give more firepower. Also the first time I bumped into megalomania the opponent got it, raised his arcane up to 30 while constantly managing to drop the taint - finally blowing me dead with one hit of 44 damage :S
Otherwise the game seemed to work really well and I'm now going back to smack those cultists :P
Good Different ^_^
Great game
Dispel card should be partial as well as building up arcane points.
instead of a card that removes everything to the opponent, there should be various cards that remove 3, 5, 50% of arcane or elder signes.
dispel is a card way too much powerful, a real kick in the balls at any point of the game.
There are some major flaws and glitches. I tried to load my game but my oppent had infinite health and then I lost. Also what is up with the you can only save every 3 levels?
The mechanics and general gameplay are just fine, and the notion is very interesting, but frequently the AI for this is exceptionally unfair and predictive.
Yes, understandably, this is a game that's somewhat based on luck, as all CCG's are, but the aspect of HAVING to jump ranks over the AI in order to stand a chance is perhaps the worst part about it. I gave this game several runs on the first couple of levels to see how 'easy' it would be to jump a rank, and not once (even in one instance where by chance I was dealt the best cards from the word 'go') did I seem to make the criteria to jump rank.
Now, that's all fair and well, you don't want it being ridiculously easy, but the fact that the computer often climbs two or three ranks for every one if you don't get a good deal makes it virtually pointless to try and compete after a while.
Oddly, as a few people seem to be remarking on, the speed of the game felt fine to me. Can't see why that's being a bit of a gripe, but whatever.
Anyway, I'm reviewing based on more than just gameplay, so let's see;
Visuals - Simple, tidy, puts everything out in an easy interface. I didn't even look at the tutorial and could grasp what everything did within a few moves.
Audio - A little basic, but for a game based off a CCG, what would you really hope for besides some background music?
Gameplay - Probably the main let-down after a while, but it's definitely addictive enough that I'll be giving it another bash after writing this.
Originality - Well, for something taken off an existing CCG, can't really call many points here, but all things considered I don't think there's any other games based off it.
Have 7/10 and 4/5. A good little game, could have a few bits ironed out, but fun enough.
This is an awesome game. The sound effects and gameplay are spot on. I really liked the board texture too. The insanities are a great fit with the game and while useful are sometimes too dangerous to rely on. (NOTE: Cthulu games may develop a personal affinity for insanity) You could easily do a larger build with this.
Could you include a deck builder or discard option? That would definitely up the replay value. If you were looking for any kind of writing/research/art help, I'd love to get involved. This is the first decent Cthulu game I've seen anywhere in a while - plus I haven't heard anyone evoke any of the card games since my game store went out of business.
Sometimes the monsters dont attack... it lost me a game against the cult initiate.
It was a little confusing, just jumping in not knowing anything. But after playing it for a while it has a rhythm. Good Job.
very interesting concept for a game. this is a very intrucate game which requires alot of thinking as well.
the "every three levels" idea is a pretty good one...it'll attract more, and more attention into wanting to play.
great game for those who are ready for a challenge
Before today, I used to hate these kinds of card games
because I didn't understand how to play them.
I like this game a lot.
You did a good job on this one keep it up
This is a quality game that keeps you wanting to play more but it could be made even better..
Some cards are maybe repeated a bit much and some of the specifics are a bit extreme in some cases and not heavy enough in others.
Megalomania for example can finish the game too quickly because of the +5 Taint every turn wiping you out after a few multiplications..
Plus the summoned monsters are also usually too weak to be of much use and there could no doubt be more than just 5 different summons to play with from the Cthulhu Mythos :)
I love the H.P. Lovecraft genre and have played CoC for many many years and toyed with the CoC card game a bit when it first came out and I really like this game. There are only a few issues that detract from top marks.
1) The ability to save after three consecutive wins is a bit harsh. Most of the game is luck so sometimes winning two in a row is dificult enough. I think your progress should be saved after each game.
and
2) There seems to be no limit to the number of copies of each card are in the deck. This makes it very difficult to form a strategy.
Other than these, the interface is easy to navigate and the rules are quite easy to understand. Great Game!
current level mi-go General!!!!i can tell which card games you have been in fluenced by which is fine as yours has nice twists.love the different ways you can go insane.very very nice.great sound effects.just add more visual effects like blood dripping down the screen when i hit my opponent.cant wait untill you figure out multiplayer!!outstanding.warning.very addictive!!
this kind of games suffer from a feeling that on high levels, cards distribution is not so random, or ecen predetermined....
Will i see one day a card game well done and really challenging not only by artificious means?
Great game nevertheless...
Oh yes, why i ended at highl lvl and when lost i restarted from lvl 4???
this was actually pretty awesome. I'm not usually one for card games
(actually, I'm never one for card games)
But this one has got me hooked!
great job
but it looks similar to old flash card game... don't remember it's name now.
Nevermind. Good work. It's hard but nice and graphics are really climatic. :)
Keep it up!
Great idea, good execution, but I feel that the opponent sometimes has all the advantages. I've played quite a few times now, and every time I get so far and then I get wiped out by the computer, which seems to get all the high damage cards and all the defense and dispel cards. All in all, I like this game, but find myself uninterested after losing time and time again. To be fair, this game truly is one of a kind (I've never seen another like it), and a true gem for a Mythos fan. An A+ effort, and a good result, and don't let my misgivings overshadow that.
I'm a competitive Magic the Gathering player and I was a bit skeptical when I saw this game on the front page. I gave it a try anyway, and now I'm hooked. I want to review every card I've seen but I don't have enough room, so here's a summary.
Although the instruction page was a little meshed together (a multiple page system explaining each part of the screen might have been easier for new-comers), the gaming system is simple enough. Although many reviewers are talking about Deck Construction, this game isn't like MtG or YuGiOh; it's more like Munchkin, where players draw from the same deck. There seems to be two copies of each card in the deck, and the deck grows as the game continues.
The gaming system is simple, yet effective. Players have sanity as a resource and life as a way of deciding when they win the game. Creatures can be summoned to assist and counterattack whenever their master is struck by a spell or weapon. Players can be put on a clock by the "taint" system, increase their defence with magical wards or research the arcane for more power, normally at the cost of sanity. The gameplay is excellent, but I do have a couple of worries.
Firstly, there are a couple of logic errors in the game. The two I noticed were that "Treachery" says "deals damage equal to your opponent's creature's power + your arcane score". Logically, if I have 4 Arcane, it should do 4, but it doesn't. Treachery is literally a dead card if your opponent has no creatures and it just takes up room if your opponent is Xenophobic. There are two possiblities: either rename the card, fix the way it works and keep the wording, or reword the card to make it clearer it needs a creature to work.
Also, the "armor" system in this game is in the form of elder wards, but these can stop the attacks of the 2-power Elder Thing. That's a bit weird. I haven't read much Lovecraft but it seems to be a logical error, though it makes perfect sense gameplay (and simplicity) wise. By the way, I LOVE the fact that the 2 power guy is awesome even over Shoggoth because of his "comes into play" effect. I think you could possibly extend that to the 3-power creature, since he doesn't do much against Shoggoth and Dimension Walker.
Oh, and the new cards aren't always displayed between rounds. "Opponent takes his sanity as damage and you both go insane" didn't show up and I almost crapped myself reading the card. Very powerful (if risky).
Other than logical errors, my main concern is that some aspects of the game skew it a little too much. I've had games where my opponent had an arcane score in the low teens (without insanity effects) and I had diddly. Dispell is one of the most powerful cards in your card set (third only to Dawn Of A New Day and Doppelganger from the ones I've seen. DoaND is INSANELY powerful, giving you massive tempo leads) and it was the only way I could possibly win that game, but I didn't draw one. Bad beats, it happens, but an engorged arcane force normally flat out wins the game due to the power-ups it gives. Maybe even out the methods by which arcana can be gained?
Last thing. The insanity system needs a touch up. I understand your randomisation runs 1-4 choices (see: Mad Experiment); I don't think that's enough for insanity, purely because the difference in them is so intense. Megalomania can win the game effortlessly and schizophrenia can stablise you from out of nowhere, whilst Xenophobia does little (and can clump up your hand, see above) and Agoraphobia...Agoraphobia is just GAME. OVER. -3 card disadvantage instantly and the solutions could be in card slots 3-5. And the computer CANNOT get it. I think you could stand to randomise 1-6, allowing for real-life play on a D6, tone down Agoraphobia from two slots to three, and introduce two new insanity effects.
Despite all I've said above, this game is EXCELLENT. The cards are well balanced, the resource systems work perfectly well and, above all, it generates a feeling of excitement whilst playing. I feel you may have a future in design. Good luck in everything you do!
I love the game. My one big prob;em is that the computer summons a disproportionate amount of creatures. It never summons.
i generally enjoyed this game it was challenging but why does the ai never seem to summon creatures. cudos to the fact that you made a ccg that i actually enjoyed
(evil grin) i like this game a lot there was only one card games i have ever liked and this is now the second one, this is a very fun game dose this game really exist? i really like it it has a evil essence to it that i like. but enough of reviewing this back to playing
when i got to mobster boss.....
i drained his insanity and he became xenophobic.....
he then kept getting that +14 hp but -5 insanity (or something like that)
which was pointless because he had no insanity left...so just a bunch of free heals
he ended up winning...
i did 126 dmg to him and he did 54 to me......gay?....VERY
its an ok game but it does get a little bit repeatative
I enjoy this game and it tends to be very aditing (SP)
First off, good game. Now onto the business portion of this, it seems that mad experiment doesn't work properly, the opponent played it and it didn't make him insane or do 15 dam+arcane, i played it and it didn't make me go insane do damage or summon shogoth.
no i dont want to play another yu gi oh spin off please!
First allow me to say that I actually do enjoy this game. I didn't think I was going to... infact I avoided it on the frontpage for a while just as I had avoided collectable card games in real life... but I do enjoy it. Sure it isn't the most original thing out there, and even the cards are (from what I understand) almost exact duplicates of a card game that already exits, but it is fun, well programed and succeds at being exactly what it sent out to be.
That said, there are a few things that either I don't understand or may be a glitch to look into for further iterations of the game...
1. A lot of the time I am unable to raise my opponents taint above two, I will use cards that should raise the taint and it ultimately results in my wasting of a turn.
2. I have noticed that if I have invulnerability up for a while my opponents attacking creature can sometimes ignore my supposedly impervious shield.
3. My biggest problem of all was that after I had played the sixth round and lost my game still saved at the recap screen. This kinda screwed me in a number of ways because I was knocked back a level yet when I loaded the game I was allowed to play the next level of opponent, therein rendering me eternally two levels behind every opponent I was to face unless I completely rocked an opponent and shot up two levels in one round, something that remained unlikely being they had two levels advanced stats on me... and thus ends my ranting foray into nerdery.
All things said, it is a great game. You have a great system worked out here and if you iron out the kinks I would love to see a more original iteration of the game. I know this site alone has hundreds of artists who would love to donate a drawing or two to a completely original version of this game. Hell, I know I would.
Anyways, good game, keep it up.
Berzerkman91 please learn your TCG's before you waste words seeing as this isn't a Yu-Gi-Oh Spin off its more like magic the gathering.
This is a well made game, nice grounds to expand on, I suggest giving players the ability to customise the decks, add alot more cards in and add in like a point system so you can buy new cards, players love customization. A playing field + being able to run a few cards at once would be cool as well offering more stratergy.
The game is good just expand on it now.
awesome...4ever...explosion
Ive been playing this game like two days and ive finally passed it..............but was hard............very addictive......
I didn't think I'd enjoy this game very much but I war wrong. This is a very addictive game and has some very good ideas like insanity and the ranking system was very fun too. I really think that you should make a sequel to this game adding more ranks and more cards to use.
I have got to start reading Lovecraft
it was ok like i said but after the 4th match it got repetitive and then thier were somethomes when i was playing where the oppenent would gbet uber buffs in like the firts 5 turns youse a card that ran on that red stuff and kill me in one turn
dont get how to play
i felt the nostalgia of Magic the Gathering :P except i didint REALLY get the how to play o_O so i just went in...but either than that good stuff man.
I love the HPL stories and the card game is awesome thanks for putting it online and to those that don't know how to play, this is probably one of the more simple card battle games
YES
this is awesome
great job
keep working on some more games of cthulhu
I dont get it so im giving 10/10 for no good reason :P
It reminds me of Urban-rivals. A MMO card game im playing atm plz note i am NOT promoting fore mentioned game
only one thing, deck editor
yupp i like this
I enjoyed it very much. Add more cards, and see what you can do about deck editing. That would truly make this game even better. Gameplay is nice and straightforward, and the card images were fantastic and well suited. It just had a very nice touch about it. I could see this becoming a real, physical trading card game.
Good Game,
I found it very addicting!:) It needs more levels, but other that good game.
Sofar, this is the only Lovecraft/Cthulhu Flash Game I've been able to find, hope you fill the Void (pun kinda intended).:)
Loved the game, not enough cards at the start though
A multiplayer mode is the only thing missing right now I guess. I would love to see this game develope further in the future. More cards, slightly better graphics and multiplayer support. Man... Great Game!
Played it trough, easy to understand gamplay. btw you have to get to lvl 20 to finish. Only thing is not many cards in the game but what the hack it was fun.
Highest arcane - 59
highest tint - 30
times insane - 11
highest attack - 59
final score - 1593
final rank - 18
Kept me up for hours! had to beat it now i can sleep
however... I noticed that whenever the computer got schizophrenia it never suffered losing 5 life, it would only gain the life.
This was a fun game. Well made! Graphics were AWESOME! I loved the Demon servants.
Sound effects were good/funny! I guess I could recommend more interaction of the cards against each other as well as pulling in from other classic horror stories.
Great first game! Keep it up!
didnt really like it but good graphics
i like playing games like this but if u make another include more cards but other than that great graphics and gameplay
I have always loved Lovecraft work, especially the Cthulhu Mythos
great done game
is there another game about this?
Nice game.
It's like Yu Gi Oh!
My little brother still playing
10/10
P.D. You should put better cards and money to buy something like cards and that tuff. :)
very good graphically and gameplaywise but it could be improved if you had a multiplayer feture. but still a great game =D
Unspeakable
I hated the Pokemon card games.
It took me ages to learn how to play them, and at the end if the day, I was the only person in School whom learnt how to play card games, no matter what the card games were (Pokemon was my first)
This is amazing.
All amyone needs to know is the symbols underneath the cards and what the mean, that;s it.
I love this game.
I Wish there were more like it.
In memory of classic computer card games such as Arcomage and Magic: The gathering planeswalker I salute you! I think you should also expand make more cards, maybe different effects, and make a downloadable version that can be played on LAN (for a price of course) It could be very popular with people who dont have or dont want to spend the money on physical card games.
i got to buggerd to play it after i lost (which was stuped of me cuz i took a huge risk =p) because it only autosaves after every 3 lvls. and i dident want to have to work back up to where i was! (one level ahead rofl) could you make it so it saves after every level? (of coarse you wont, bacause im only one minor person and the majotry of people dont care about the issue im bringing up 0.0 )
anyway... i think you should be able to buy new cards and edit your deck. its alot easyer to play a game if you know what cards are in your deck, and you seem to never let a player see all the cards in his/her deck without playing the game and slowly learning them all. so yeah...if you cant make a feature where you can buy cards, could you atlest make a feature which lets you see all your cards? ( i think im not the only one who would like these new feature(s) )
please respond! (not because i dont beleve that you actually read revues, i just like it when people respond =] )
Loved the Lovecraft feel to it. The cards were awesome (and their references. The game reminded me of magic: the gathering. Creatures to me felt a bit useless (I would only use them if they give me a bonus). Sanity should be a bit more buffed up in my opinion having zero sanity could screw with you but it really didn't do much other then the messing with you. Anyways an addicting game loved it. It can only get better!
This is an awsome game! I know only a little about the Cthulhu and HP Lovecraft series, but one doesn't need to know a lot to enjoy this. I actually learned more of the mythos from this game. In my opinion, this game is a hell of a lot better than Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Magic, or anything I've ever seen.
Lol, I'm an Eternal Darkness fan myself. It's a game inspired by (but not based on) H.P. Lovecraft style. I mastered Eternal Darkness, and I've mastered your game in a single day. (Not that it wasn't hard) I even thought of every single substitution for turning your game into Eternal Darkness. I don't want to though.... you'll see what I mean in a minuet.
You have a great game. But Eternal Darkness Mythos actually plays into a card game style a lot better than Cthulhu Mythos could is all. I guess you gotta know the game. Try it... it's on Gamecube, but playable on Wii. I know what your thinking... Nintendo=Kiddie, but Eternal Darkness is FAR from kiddie.
What software did you use to make this game? I had an awsome idea while playing your game. Perhaps we could work together to create a spinoff. Eternal Darkness vs. Necronomicon. I would love to work with you. Obviously, improving this game is first on your list, but maybe sometime we could do it. Let me Know.
This is one of the best games I've tried on NG! It's strategic, and you have to use your brain a lot to win. this game kept me entertained for many hours, and I won the game at last. Please make more games like this!
High points simply because of the content it is based upon. I am absolutely a huge fan of Lovecraft, and the Cthulu Mythos. A fairly well done treatise. However, I could not rate it a fully as I cared too, despite my somewhat biased opinion. The game certainly could use pop-up help, such as mouse roll-over, things of that nature. What a game it would be if it could perchance be multiplayer, as well. Overall, the game didn't quite flow as well as expected, and a few quirky bugs need to be ironed out. However, despite these flaws, it has the potential to be huge! I can already see an actual CCG emerging out of this!
Good is all I have to say.
It need few things ... more balanced deck and fixed bugs with Taints. I think ...
Although making an excellent job of a good card game.. it was not immediately obvious on what to do
I love hp lovecraft's books and I think this is a very good game at first I was like. Awww man it's a card game but I played anyway and now im hooked. Oh and theres a bug with the taint though it goes to 2 and you can't get it to go any higher with cards. But otherwise it's a great game. Make more please!!!!!
This game happens to be one of my favorites. I like the game play. And I love the fact that you can turn a game around even if you are at 1 life. H.P Lovecraft would be proud.
This game is AWESOME the way it is! Not having taint be cumulative is really good, as it lets you have tougher decisions as to whether you should use a taint card to "waste" a card slot or not. Although, I agree there should be some cards that do give taint accumulation. You should add that into the next version of this game!
This is super addictive, I WANT MORE!!!!!!!!
i you are going to make another one please please please add in a deck editor that is what this game is really missing
Neeeeeeds a card editor so your decks can reflect a general strategy. Megalomaniac is absolutely the craziest effect ever. I got fried for 31 by the mob boss. Schizophrenia is total balls, you never get hp from it it seems, and I never had an ability past 3 before it was dispeled or I got a sanity issue (agoraphobia) that disabled the real pain makers. Probability abandons me again.
Good little quotes for every ability. My friend is a ktulu fiend so he might like it, but if I want to play a card game, for now I'll stick with PSO Ep 3 or Lost Kingdoms.
Good effort, it was challenging and fun.
8 head explodeys out of 10.
5/5 and 10 perfect. I love this game. If you were selling, I would be buying. Nice work!
I used to play this game on funny-games~base for a long time, but I'm glad to see it on New grounds.
I think Mystery123 is thinkin about Maganic Wars which is on Funny- games. Tho the game play is similar This FAR surpasses Maganic Wars In Both Dificulty and Style I only wish that the display was Larger on here so I could see the cards Better! Keep up the great work!
But I found somethings about the game...annoying. You and the opponent should have different decks. It's kinda boring seeing the same cards over and over again. With Schizophrenia my opponent every turn will gain 5 life never lose any life from it. I will only lose my health. And, one last thing, when people go insane there should not be any benefits. Like having more arcane or whatever its called and getting tainted. Taint won't kill them, but them having 40 arcane can easily kill me.
It was ok I think it should have a realy good seuqal and the battles must be shorter
the game was great, but i dont like the fact that theres a very select few monsters and there needs to be more attack cards.
Maybe add some more cards if possible. Too bad it didint win anything :(
Great effects, great sounds, great interface, but its deffinently lacking gameplay. I mean, Your opponent has a whole different deck 10x stronger then yours. I mean, goddamn he has cards that do 15 damage to life and have him gain 2, and some have him gain 20 sanity/life, and your deck is FULL of "Does 2 damage" 'Gain 1 sanity" Its bullcrap, Crap game, needs work.
great game but maybe if you could pick your cards it will be better
great work but needs to be a little improved
you had a better chance of making a game of Texas Hold Em' and releasin this game atleast texas hold em is a game that makes some sense this game is like yugioh if we wanted a game like yugioh than tehy wouldnt have canceled the show 4 years ago :P.
I enjoy Cthulhu stuff so props to using that as your theme.
Its a good MTG-type card game, with only a few flaws.
One being that you dont get any deck customization, but this can be overlooked.
A lot of minor bugs having to do with damage or attacks...
I didnt write them down but I do recall the Betrayed card doesnt work if your opponant has no creature... even though that should be 0+Magic and not null.
its a good game but it needs a option of saveing after every game plus more minoin cards also you need to make it were you can more then one monster and use them to attack not soley defence. youalso need to make more ongoing abilitys and effects instead of just taint, defence and arcane. plus getting cards should be easier like after every game, you should get points to buy new cards and xp to lv up and after a few lvs you get a card and you should be able to play more then one cards on your turn and have instant cards so you can save your ass from attacks, finaly the enemys decks should be randomand unique becuse i dosent make sence when your lv5 and your fighting a lv 10 and they have the same crappy cards you do
It's like a fake yugioh. Really good graphics though, and it looks like it took a lot of effort so 5 stars....
It's also just not my kind of game...
The Cthulu universe was a great base for this game, and you obviously put a lot of work into the artwork for each card. Visually, the game was a winner, but the gameplay became simplistic before the game ended. Granted, does not reach the 'stick massacre' or 'blow shit up in space' level of repetition that many of the games on Newgrounds exhibit, but gameplay decisions were second-nature by the time the gamer reached level 10 or so. This could be solved by adding more nuanced cards to the game as the gamer progresses from one level to the next. On the whole a great play that could be improved with some creative card-inclusion.
Slimshadywil dont know what hes talking about this game is great its not like yugiho its WAY better great i played 4 lika three\four hours
This is one of the few Flash Card Games I have enjoyed, the style and art is fantastic and feel perfect for the genre that this game presents to the player. It looks like a lot of work has been put into this and I would not be amazed if something like this becomes a Purchasable PC Game (extended of course) or even something like a TCG itself.
The only thing I feel is a bit weak is the speed, some cards feel like it takes forever for them to activate or even act, even though it gives you enough time to enjoy the card's art the speed could have been a bit more, well more...
Oh and by the way, NOT every TCG is based off nor can be compared to Yu-Gi-Oh. That Card game is just a Manga game come real, its a Fandom thing, if you wanna look at a good TCG look at Magic The Gathering. Stop whining...
I'm glad you used the artwork from the Mythos card game as opposed to the newer Cthulhu card game. I don't like the art direction in the new TCG. As for the game, it feels like it plays with both players sharing the same deck so it feels more like Munchkin than a Yu-gi-oh or a M:TG. This could make the concept easier to sell to a card distribution company for profit.
My biggest problem with the game is with how sanity is dealt with. I don't see why the sanity has to be randomized at the beginning of each round. It gives one side a small advantage that isn't necessary. I can see how different people would have different sanity thresholds, but unless you plan on adding player cards similar to the Heroes in the WoW TCG its just a wasteful gimmick.
Aside from that problem I plan on playing it more because it is a genuinely fun game that I can't play anywhere else
Is it just me, or is this game almost entirely luck? As far as I can tell the computer doesn't really think, and the plays that you should make are basically obvious. This means that it just comes down to if you or the comp draws the good cards more frequently. Hm...
The only mechanic I found strange was the blackmail card, which makes the opponent discard a card but that discarded card is immediately refilled which sort of defeats the purpose of the card. Perhaps in a new version blackmail would be used on yourself so you can get two new cards and another turn?
this game is fun and addicting but its a little creepy
i like it
sorry but it sucks! dude but still im so very sorry!
This is a fun game! You may have to improove somethings but its great!
Great game for its genre, but I found the whole insanity mechanic to be a little weak. There are conditions that are way more dentrimental than others, so it ends up being a little too unbalanced. For example, xenophobia doesn't do much if you don't summon, but agoraphobia totally locks out more than half your hand; especially annoying when you have a +sanity card in that locked-down part.
Still, core gameplay is nice, and with a bit of polishing on the mechanics (Maybe let the user choose which 2 slots they're locked to when they get agoraphobia?), this would be great. 9/10, 5/5.
yea its not exactly luck. but it is pretty fun obviously u wont pick the wronge card but its a good game and i give it 2 thumbs up.
I liked it, but it got boring after a while...a big improvement would be you making it multiplayer, but, yeah, like you said...
Anyways, nice game! I'd like to see a seccond one with more and improved features!
i dont like it that much its not because it a bad game its just im not the card playing person im more of a good graphics lover lmao good game tho
Too tedious though...
fun game.
it could use a deck building section.
There's definitely some room for improvement. I liked how each card was different and easily distinguishable by their pictures. I also liked those little quotes at the bottoms of cards, and they remind me of Magic: the Gathering. The sounds got a little repetitive after a while, so I'd suggest adding more sounds and randomizing them a little. I don't know if it was a glitch or anything, but I couldn't get past the second level because the computer kept getting Dark Young Charge and using it on me at the worst possible times, finishing me off and ensuring a last minute win for the computer. The last time I played, the computer literally had 1 Life and 1 Sanity left. The animations could be even faster, and I felt like the game was moving really slowly at times. Overall, though, I really liked the style of it. Looking forward to updates/sequels.
It's not as accessible a game as some, but I really like the content, especially the interplay of all the factors, and how insanity becomes an increasing factor as life totals go up, which makes so much sense.
Although the changes do make for quicker, cleaner gameplay, things don't seem quite so nicely balanced as before, and... is cthulhu really quick or clean? That said, I'm damned excited to see the new (in)sanity effects.
it was cool
For a card game omfg this rocks...no real flaws
;O,, im still insain from no sanity in the game
it was pretty boring because al the other player does is heal himself
I'm not much of a fan of Trading Card flashes, but I thought this was a pretty cool game. The concept was creative, and I liked how the sanity system worked. The only problem I had was that there weren't many cards. If you would update to put in more cards and a little more gaming, I would be very thankful. Keep up the good work.
