Escape the Lab (48 Hour)

Author Comments

This game is one entry for the first SIGMA 48 hour game competition, held in Christchurch, New Zealand July 2008. The other entry is called "Gulo".

The theme of the competition was "Sustainability". Oddly, both groups came up with concepts based on Blobs, though the game play is quite different. In this game "Escape the Lab", you play a bacteria which you must help to grow and escape its Petri dish. In the next level you must survive the gauntlet of lab equipment to grow large enough to escape the lab.

Both groups started with 6 people, who came and went during the 48 hours.

The aim of the weekend was for the various local professional game studios, educational facilities and enthusiasts to collaborate of creating games. The first competition included people from Stickmen Studios, Def-Logic, Zodal, University of Canterbury, Christchurch Polytechnic Institution of Technology and Unlimited Paenga Tawhiti (a local high school that also hosted the event).

One of the criteria for judging the games will be number of plays through New Grounds. Another is the ranking from Newgrounds users. Enjoy...

Ps. Your feedback will contribute to the continued development of these games beyond the 48 hour competition.

Instructions:

Level 1: Arrow Keys to move your bacteria. Eat the sludge to grow. When you get bigger than the enemies you will be able to eat them too. You win when you get large enough to escape the Petri dish!

Level 2: Arrow Keys to move + Space to jump, and if you look closely the more you walk the more slime you loose and the smaller you get. Navigate the gauntlet of traps and obstacles and ultimately grow large enough to escape the lab!

Taylor ur an idiot

Taylor glub is far beter our one was fairly avto much truble with difficalty and time it toke to make the levels so we couldnt make enough

Average. At Best.

Enjoyed the first level, was fun.
My real problem was with the second level. I felt it had a number of problems.
Firstly the having to move your character backwards and forwards for two minutes just to be able to go under the passage was completely stupid and really removed the re playability aspect of this game. Secondly I could not figure out to bypass the heat thing (Although I had limited experiences attempting this due to the fact I had to shrink my character every time).
I would of given a lower rating, but the first level was such fun.

Not bad for 48hrs, but a little more testing would of gone a long way in making this game allot better.

welldone :)

Not too sure I am allow to participate in rating. I did it anyway. I never get the bacteria big enough to do anything, the enemies always got me. :(

okay..

I like this game, but when theres the small tunnely bit before the flame, you have to make yourself small enough to fit through there, then you turn off the flame, but then you can't jump high enough to turn off the heat lamps at the end. Please fix this and the game would be perfect.

lordlinton responds:

Yes, you can jump high enough, but you need to recharge your health in the small petri dish first :)

Nice

If you honestly did this in 48 hours well done to you this is a cracking game with alot going for it if you wanted to spend some time on it that is :)
