**Original**
Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor recently announced a fanmade 'film festival', in which users could submit their own music videos for their album "Ghosts I -IV".
Inspired by the track '7 Ghosts I', I created this video, an exploration of a post-apocalyptic, war-scarred landscape. I used Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and Flash CS3 in the process.

This video may appear very dark and hard to see on some monitors. If you find this is the case, there's a handy little navigation bar to the upper right, the second of the two buttons will brighten the video which will hopefully make things a bit easier to see for you... Also included a play/pause button for your convenience!

Please let me know what you think! You can view a low-resolution, absolutely-brutalised-by-
compression version on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/wa tch?v=T2Jc9LTKS9E - feel free to leave me comments there as well. I hope you all enjoy it!

For those of you not aware, the album 'Ghosts I - IV' was released under a "Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike license", pretty much meaning this sort of fan video (as well as remixes etc) is totally legal, as long as due credit is given. Find out more about it all at http://ghosts.nin.com

**Update**
Hey everyone, thanks for all the feedback so far! I'm glad that a lot of you enjoyed it, and I really appreciate all the nice comments you're leaving me.

To address the main criticism: Yep, there's not much of a story, just a collection of scenery really. It was actually intentional, for a couple of reasons - I felt that trying to put a story to the music would feel forced, so I thought it would be better to go for just setting a mood/atmosphere just to provide a visual companion. It's all about the music, after all! Also, the basic idea is that this is a glimpse of a "post-apocalyptic" kind of setting, where mankind is gone, and nature is free to reclaim the land - so other than the occasional animal, there's not really much else that can happen.
I totally get the criticism though, I was afraid myself that it might be too boring for a lot of people's tastes, and I assure you my next submission to Newgrounds will be more interesting! Thanks for taking the time to watch it anyway, and for giving me feedback :)

I really liked it especially because i think this is one of the best ghosts songs after nr 8. I have to agree with others here though, there wasn't much going on in the picture and it makes you lose interest after a while since its just scenery going on, maybe if you added a character in there who went exploring that would pick up the pace, great artwork though.

You have a really good sense of direction.

I only have 2 critisms, first of all the backgrounds didnt appear to be optimised. Depending on whether you are using Flash 8 or up, or CS3 simply turn allow smoothing on in the library for each bitmap. If your using an older version of flash, stick the code

_quality = "best"

in the first frame of the movie and it will have the same effect, it was a shame to see flash pixelating the backgrounds as they tweened, either of these should clean that up.

My second gripe is with the timing, i just wish the subtle things like the dripping was timed to the beat of the music, it would have livened it up just that little bit more.

Overall tho very nicely done, i look forward to seeing more from you.

Author's Response:

Hey thanks for the reminder! I originally didn't think you could turn on smoothing with PSD imports, but then found the source bitmaps in the Assets folders.

Funny thing, that dripping originally was in sync but during the editing process the scene got moved and I never corrected it. Thanks for your comment!

"Amazing art"

You have a real talent when it comes to background painting, that's for sure. Was it a mixture of scans/photoshop and flash? Although nothing really happened, it was a good way of depicting a desolate place where nothing happens anymore. Is it an official job? I'd love to see something else by you with more of a story.

Author's Response:

None of this project was scanned, the only original hand-drawings I did were for storyboarding. I illustrated all the more detailed static background elements using Illustrator, then imported the outlines across into Photoshop, where I colored them. The clouds were done enitrely in photoshop, and the animated elements (the birds, rats etc) were drawn and animated frame-by-frame directly in Flash.

I've got a few more projects in mind which I'll submit to Newgrounds, all with actual stories! The only question is when I actually get them finished. Thanks for the feedback!
