Here is its eulogy, a collection of the kind words written about it while still among the living. They shall live on forever in its place.

It occurred to me that while there are so many Flash tutorials on NG, there aren't many (if any) tutorials on music.

This first lesson focuses mainly on the theory aspect of music, as will the next few.
After that, I'll move into different software programs that are used for making music.

Thanks for taking the time to watch this (hopefully you did), ands please take the time to rate/review.

Finally, the piano sounds heard are by Garritan Personal Orchestra, and remain property of them, so now you can't sue me.

Interesting

This has most of the basics for learning music in one easy flash.
Interface was nice and really easy to understand. The interactions and demos such as listening was great to add.
Music is a really complicated and long study, and it is hard to teach it to someone who wants to master it, so you've got a long work ahead of you. However, this fit nicely for the first installment.
The only things I had to complain, were some things you should have added: one was that you didn't cover rests and their values. You could have also explained what majors are, or is that in the next one?

nicely done

this was great! this was VERY basic for me, but i highly recommend any beginners or newbs to music to take a look into this flash.

good music lesson

pretty much everything I learned in the first week of music theory. I agree with the guy a few reviews down about the note value names. While those names are older names that have been around for a long time, and to some people it would be easier than thinking in terms of number measurement, the standard is using whole, half, quarter, eighth, and so on, so it could be confusing to some people if they learn it as semebreive, minim, crochet, and quaver. Also, I prefer no echo with the piano notes, but that's more preference than anything else as I like clean tones rather than what you have which is pretty and can be used just as well, but using a pedal on the piano is definitely not a beginner lesson. Overall I liked it a lot, good lesson, I really knew all that stuff already, but I'm glad that maybe some people with little knowledge of music can see this and maybe learn a little more.

Good job!

I really like this, and am looking forward to more. I also agree with the previous statement that this series of tutorials needs a qwerty piano interface, and if you don't know how to do that and aren't willing to learn, PM me, and I'd be willing to code it in for you because I think it would be a great improvement for this series of tutorials. It would also be nice to have the sound bytes stop playing when the key/mousebutton is released, which I could also code in if you like.

I highly suggest learning actionscript or getting a programmer. Other things that are possible using actionscript are "games" where you guess intervals by ear, guess notes by ear or by written note, try to play out written notes, write notes out and have the computer play them, try to get the beats right, etc. etc. etc....
If you had time, you could even build an entire sequencer within flash, though that would be a huge project if there were many different instruments with all available octaves.

I'm hoping you'll continue these as far as possible. Again, let me know if you need any help.

Thanks, I might just take you up your offer. I too think that the Qwerty interface would be great, as would a release mechanism.

Thanks for the review, I'll PM you if I need any ActionScript.

Awesome

Nicely done. The layout was clear enough so nothing was cluttered. The piano sound was nice. Perhaps in the next tutorial, you can include time signatures and the bass clef. Dynamics could also be included. Great job.

<deleted> responds:

Thanks.

All the things you listed WILL be covered in the next tutorial, so nothing to worry about.
