i appreciate how accurate GhostOfABullet (2 posts below) described the genre, and i myself listen to some "math metal" but one thing i'd like to point out.

good attempt

In a way this cartoon addresses the joke and misses the point at the same time.

Math Metal(aka mathcore for you hardcore kids) is characterized by the use of Dissonance which in music refers to broken key signatures, loudness, and combing awkward notes in uncommon time signature rhythms, like an A with a D#. Most people don't like it because the notes in that pattern often sound gross and musically obnoxious, but it takes a strong taste to appreciate the technical skill to pull it off. It sounds easy and irrational, but it takes much talent to make awkward notes sounds right if it's given the right rhythm, sometimes constant. Otherwise it would be a bunch of random notes.

Anyway, i thought it was funny when the devil was referred to, not because of it being metal, but because dissonance irritating sound was once considered the Original Devil's music pretty much before the 20th century.
