"Needs polishing."
date: August 5, 2009
At first I was very intrigued by this game. Kingdom of Machines is pretty much like a Zelda-action RPG, it could work, but it needs some polishing.
This game has some nice pixel art graphics, it works well with the whole game technically and aesthetically. There is a variety of enemies, and because every area is generated randomly with code, it's never quite the same game twice.
Sadly, Kingdom of Machines suffers from some substantial problems. First, there is no save game or load game feature. This is obviously a huge problem for an RPG of any kind. It leaves no re-playability whatsoever. Most average games don't usually finish an RPG in one sitting. It would be a great and also drastic improvement if a save and load feature was implemented. The controls feel slippery and wonky, but in all fairness, they still work.
The AI was poor, as there behaviour seems to consist of (walk back, walk forward over and over again) -- I have no problem with patrolling units, but that's all they do without keeping attention of their surroundings.
Even the games most innovative feature (the randomly generated levels) still left lots to be desired, and unfortunatly, there were bugs, at one point it generated a dead end, and I had to start a new game, which was a shame.
I'm sorry if I'm being a negative-nancy because overall, this game has alot of potential, but general laziness and other unfortunates made this game questionable.
If you're a Zelda fan, give it a try, you may look pass the bugs and truly enjoy this game for what it is.
