I wanted to do something involving my webcam. so i whipped out an old chalkboard I had.

Doing this near a window was a bad choice. there are times when the lighting drastically changes. Please try to ignore that.

I also hate chalk now. One day i might do another one of these, but right now I just hate chalk. I broke like 10 pieces, and it gets everywhere. What is chalk made out of? Pudding!?!

I'd appreciate some reviews. thanks

"Not enough real animation!"

The little men waving then jumping at the start were great! Lovely to watch. Surprisingly smooth animation, considering you wouldn't have been able to see the previous pic.

After that, it went downhill - no real animation (apart from the breaking stick, which was good but not as smooth as the starting bits) - just shots of a pic being drawn or erased. Really that sort of 'animation' is fair enough to use in small sections, but after the incredible beginning, I was disappointed.

Good stuff nevertheless. Soothing tune.

i never thought of it like that. i see your point though. maybe if i make another chalk movie, i'll keep that in mind.

also, my trick for knowing what the last frame was, was that i just kinda dabbed at it with the eraser. then it would be so faded, that i could make it out, but the camera was too weak to notice anything. so then i'd just draw my next frame around that.

tricky, no?

Its original. I can see that this took alot of time, but i think this was too short and the drawing were too random. Oh well, its nice and soothing.

Author's Response:

soothing seems like a fair representation.

it honestly didnt take as much time as people think. it took its fair share, but overall not to bad.
maybe if i make another chalk movie, thinks will be more conisistent. maybe with a plot. haha

It's refreshing to see such a different media used. I'm not entirely sure how to review this. If I watched this same animation done directly with Flash I wouldn't be impressed, and yet watching it here I am. Am I being too hard on kids who try to do their work in Flash? A mouse is much harder to draw with than chalk in the first place, so I should be easier on them, but the time it takes to do the web shots is so much longer...Anyways, I'm rambling, good job.

Author's Response:

dont worry about rambling. it's good to hear opinions.

although i am the opposite. if i would have done that same thing with flash, it would have taken about 5 minutes. but with chalk it took about 2 hours. chalk is very awkwardly shaped, and not very smooth going.

"you suck"

date: September 9, 2007

nah im just playing with ya dude. it was actually one of the best flashes i've seen in a while. very creative and i do think you should do a movie like this it could turn out to be pretty sweet. so how exactly did you do this thought?

September 9, 2007

Author's Response:

thanks man. maybe i will make a movie out of chalk.

i just set up my webcam facing my chalkboard. then i'd draw, snap picture, add a little more, and snap the next picture. it took a fair amount of time. then once you have all your pictures, i import it into a program called "Monkey Jam"

after i give certain things a few extra frames, i export the movie, then imprt the movie into flash, were i add the preloader and such.
