When Stigg's class held a Health Fair, most of the kids brought healthy foods or exercise equipment. But not Stigg-- he brought free cake instead! Everyone knows cake isn't good for you, but it sure draws a crowd. Fortunately, Stigg has a secret weapon... the Veggie-Matic!

As you've probably guessed, this game is my entry to the Wiggi World contest! That means it's designed for kids aged 5-12. It needs to be clean, there needs to be a reasonably finite ammount of play-time, the first level needs to be do-able by tiny human-larve with developing reflexes, etc. etc. I tried to make the game as fun as I could, given these requirements.

I've written a lot of Flash reviews here at Newgrounds, but this is my first submission. Feel free to rip it apart-- I thrive on criticism. :)

Oh, also, I'd like to thank Erica Mendez and ShockDingo from the Voice Actors Alliance. I'm sorry I don't have a website for either of them but they can be reached at the VAA forum. Both of them came to my aid with auditions even though I posted with a ridiculously short deadline, and even better, they both managed to really nail the voices of characters I'd made up in my own head!

Nice

Not my sort of thing at all - but I can see a lot of effort went into this.
Protect definatley... Try something a little more mature next time perhaps? Especially if you plan on submitting to newgrounds.

Pretty good

First level was very slow, but sped up quite nicely. You might want to consider some sort of reload mechanism to stagger the firing, otherwise it's just button mashing.

Great simple game.

I did consider it, and I decided against it. I'm very sorry if button mashing's not your thing. Early on in the design stage, I decided that button-mashing would just go down smoother for most players. So rather than try to spice up the primary play mechanic with reloading or auto-fire or timing puzzles or something, I just tried to make the best damn button-masher I could.

I feel I succeeded. :)

Nice game!

The gameplay is, to sum it up, nice. It's good and it's friendly. Considering it's also in a competition for kids' games, it's also got a very good theme.
I like the variety of gameplay offered, and the inventive way of displaying the health.

There are three aspects I don't like, but as this game is targeted at kids, who are not sophisticated game players, they are probably not too important. However, you asked for criticism, so I'll lend it:
- After a few levels (level 7, I think) the gameplay becomes relatively monotonous, although up 'til here the variety is excellent. But I probably only got this far because I used my tablet pen, and its double-click button (I cheated :P)
- The corridors through which the enemies come through are narrow, such that I can just fire vegetables straight down their center (not aiming at enemies particularly) and enemies will get hit.
- I can spam-shoot to my heart's delight which makes the game very easy (although it's meant to be - kids are playing it). If a more sophisticated game were made based upon this basic gameplay (shoot stuff at enemies from a turret), I'd make the enemies give more points (5 or so) and in turn make stray fire (veggies that hit nothing) take away 1 point (the extra points are to make up for the likelihood of missing). However, I'm grateful you didn't consider a cooldown, because that would make the game damn near impossible later on when there's lots of enemies and they're all fast.

Sorry to hear it got boring after level 7. Yes, the wacoms can absolutely shred this game. XD I considered a bunch of different way of balancing the gameplay... power-ups, level-ups, enemies who strafe and dodge...Ultimately I was limited by some very simple procedural AI and a desire to keep the gameplay simple and pure. I actually really hate play mechanics that limit your manuverability, rate-of-fire, or force you to rush through a level. I find them a cheap and annoying handicap.

So yes, a few people with wacoms will be able to breeze through the game. But the alternative is to stifle the player with rate-of-fire rules that make the game more of a chore to play, while not neccessarily adding any true challenge or entertainment value to the player. That's my take on the rate-of-fire issue.

Great Game!

You did an excellent job on this game! It's fun, addictive and the concept is great! I like the way the player's "hits" are shown with the cake being eaten, and the voice acting is well done.

I do think that the learning curve from the first level to the second is a little high. Maybe make the levels after one a little bit easier so that the 5-12 year olds can be eased into the game a little more? A short break between waves would also be nice, to allow the player to "kill" the "enemies" from the current wave before having to deal with the next wave.

Otherwise, if I had 5-12 year old kids, I'd let them play this. I'd even play with them!

Glad to hear it. :) Hopefully this game will be the source of many warm fuzzy family moments.

Now, I don't have any kids of my own. So I had to calibrate this game's challenge level using a friend's cousins. I told my friend about the game, she had her cousins play it while she was babysitting them. Here's what I learned from the first session:

-The 4 year old had pretty bad hand-eye coordination, so stage 1 had to be slowed down.
-The ten year olds were getting bored cuz the whole game was too easy.
-The twelve year old just wanted to get back to his Wii. No doubt this kid could kick my ass at counter-strike and has Halo 3 on pre-order.

Heck, when I was 12, I was beating Mario and Megaman. Kids are not bad at video games.

It was starting to look like I'd lose half my audience no matter what I did, so I just made the first stage as easy as possible, then started upping the ante from there, never giving myself too much more than a light workout.

I know it doesn't seem like it scales very nicely. But it scales MUCH more nicely than it did. 5-12 is an amazingly diverse range. I can only hope is the little kids will have fun playing the first few levels, and gradually acquire the skills to master them. Otherwise, there'd be nothing for the bigger kids to do but trudge through 9 boring levels to get to the one level that actually speaks to them.

I agree that a pause between levels would have been nice. But it was way, way low on my list of priorities.
