Impressive for the 1970s
I have to admit this game is a guilty pleasure to me. I'm not sure why; maybe it's the simplicity of a genre which has widely come to be much more complicated than it should be, or maybe it's because I'm a sucker for old-fashioned 2.5D graphics.
To be honest with you, I'm not really sure why I like this game. There is no challenge whatsoever except to complete for best times in the high scores. As soon as you get ahead of the A.I., and you will, the only gameplay mechanic is not being an idiot and slamming into rocks.
I guess I should give credit where credit is due. The game's visual style is, as I said, an interesting curiosity in 2.5D graphics which probably made for as lightly hardcore job of programming. The game's simplicity makes it a joy to play at 1 in the morning when you have nothing else better to do, and I have to admit that it's nice being able to mock the A.I. as it continues to lag behind you.
Some physics, like having the cars slide around when making sharp turns or implementing a handbrake feature, would be nice. A larger selection of cars with more features would also be a nice feature, as only two makes even a roster of four contestants per match look all the same. I can't say I have a problem with the soundtrack, but more than one song repeated endlessly would make me one happy panda.
The level design is top-notch for a game of this simplicity, with levels like "desert," "snow," and "city at night" which while simple at least match the style of the game. However, this is one game where invisible walls around the map would have been a good idea, as my experience with the game is largely characterized by a single incident quite some time ago when I managed to get past the rocks keeping me inside the night city map and wound up driving around an endless void of repeating ground paintings trying to find the track again.
As a guilty pleasure, the game isn't bad at all. As a more hardcore game, it could use some work, but at the same time I'm giving it 5/10 for at least not trying to be more than it is.
