IMPORTANT: This is a rather different version of Chapter 1!
The original was released in 2007, but this version was uploaded in 2010. It's basically a 'remake' in many ways, though the plot and events are generally the same.

Unfortunately, your saves from the old version won't work due to the drastic differences behind the scenes, but there are enough differences, I hope, to make replaying worthwhile. Any saves you make in this version can carry over to later chapters properly.

EDIT (21st of August 2010): Sorry, there'd been bugs with this version for a long time! It's because I fixed the bugs on Kongregate and updated the version there, but didn't do so here... Now I have though, so hopefully all problems will be fixed.

Oh, but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make sure you have an appropriate Flash Player version! There's a screen at the start that warns you if your version is outdated. If this screen appears *at all*, then you may (probably will) experience some bizarre saving problems. Updating your Flash Player prevents them.

Best ever Newgrounds RPG

Now, it's a good game, but instead of pointing out the positive, I'm going to point out what I think should be changed. These are just suggestions and glitches.

1. I had a problem with the saving, when I did save, somehow all the skills I had "mastered" had been changed to the point when I last saved. The problem could be because I had two save files. I think fixing this problem should be a priority.

2. When Deugan rejoins the party, he appears right on top of the playing character, directly in bed with him.

3. In the party screen of the menu clicking on the open parts (the area where future party members could be) two other characters appear named Ted and Laurence, both of which are of the class expendable solder.

4. I wanted to be able to close the menu with the enter button from any point in the menu.

5. X seems like a bad button to press for actions, the A button would do wonders as outside combat actions.

6. The poison attack rate of the rats is either too high, or the antidote drop rate is too low.

7. The lead pipe drop rate seems a little too high.

8. The dragon should have two different difficulties easy for those noobs who don't like to think strategy, and hard for us RPG fanatics.

9. Another one or two woodland monsters would be nice.

10. AP seems to be gained very rapidly for the early skills, but they are early, kinda junky skills, so as long as you don't keep the later skills at 5 ap.

11. The money drop rate seemed a little low based on the cost of potions and antidotes

Pseudolonewolf responds:

Odd... I've never encountered that saving error before... Perhaps it's got something to do with you not allowing Flash to store as much data as it needs to?

What's wrong with Deugan crawling into bed with Mardek? Do you think that's WRONG, huh?!?! o_O

Those invisible Expendable Soldiers are a weird but amusing bug that I didn't notice until just recently! Though I've fixed them in the newest version.

I might add support for closing menus with the enter key...
But I'm keeping X as the action button merely because it's too annoying to change!
And perhaps I'll change those drop rates or poison rates...

The Dragon doesn't need to be hard as well as easy; it's better easy, actually, because that shows how powerful Mardek and Deugan are as Heroes...

I think there are enough monsters in the Soothwood; monsters aren't easy to make!

And all the later skills take much, much more AP to learn!

Also, you're not supposed to get much money for buying things in this chapter... It's not especially necessary anyway. You get more money from battles in later chapters though!

And thank you for all the suggestions!

The Bearded Man WINS!

Hah, this is a very funny (and also very good) game. Keep up the good work, I can't wait to see more.

Oh, also the dragon is incredibly easy. To anyone who can't beat him: you suck.

Highly enjoyable

I found this to be highly enjoyable. I look forward to Chapter 2. This is certainly one of the best flash RPGs I've ever played.
