nice one

that was a very nice game. i really liked the graphics and the concept behind this one.. they were very nice. the gameplay was also pretty good too, nice selections from the audio portal, a good plot to it, an effective time killer and your efforts were nice.

best flash game i've ever played. =0D

My only problem with this is that it lags once I get to the hospital, but that's not your fault. The level of detail blows me away, you clearly did your homework before putting this together. Took me a while to get used to the inventory and I was wasting a lot of bullets, but that's my fault. I must confess that I am only in the hospital and I quit due to the lag times, will try again later since I have a password now. anyway, just wanted to heap the praise upon you. ^_^

Glad to see the final version

At least now I can compare to mine and make sure it's not the same, and by the looks of it, mine is MUCH different :D same style tho, I really like how this game was designed except for the walking, it was a bit glitchy but I'm sure what you did had a point to it like not walking in diagonals.

It was very solid, I think that you could have made each walking section a bit bigger, mine follows the guy for a bit and then switches to reduce lag!

Nice weapon stuff, that was well made, easy but effective script in that section, much enjoyed here!

Smart how you made a mix of Birds eye and Side scrolling view, so it's not quite either, I enjoyed that as well, added a nice 3D-ish style!

Music was alright, the intro kinda turned me off because it was soo good to begin with, the "screech" completely made my eyes open wide cuz it didn't fit,,, if you had turned the volume on the music down on that section as the guy started talking, might have looked a bit better.

Overall, the only things I had a problem with were the walking style and the intro sounds. Other than that this is a very solid game and I hope to see it on front page!

Hey, good to hear from you again Paragon'! I initially intended the game to be playable in the PSP browser (which it is, until it runs out of RAM), which is why I used static screens instead of a scrolling environment.

I appreciate you taking the time to leave feedback, and look forward to playing your game when it's done.

Surprised no one has commented on this,

but this is basically 'flash Silent Hill...' only, without any actual atmosphere or anything remotely comparable to the 'personality' of that series. I don't mean to seem biased, I'm simply stating as I see it.

It's a flash horror/adventure game, score! Not nearly enough of them out there, IMO.

Graphics are decent, the style is... interesting, not necessarily 'good' or 'bad,' just... interesting.

It's a very, very formulaic survival horror game. 'Protagonist is alone, lost in dark/foggy/dangerous environment, has little ammo/weapon selection and is surrounded by monsters.' That's the recipe for survival horror; other examples (The Suffering, or Fatal Frame) add more to the mix, while this seems to be an almost 'following the recipe' endeavor.

The game engine itself needs a little tweaking on several issues:
Just walking around can be a pain in the ass, there's little smoothness to the character animation, and running at a diagonal - a very useful dodge technique, if one is supposed to choose flight before fight - is near impossible. Perhaps a 'toggle-run' instead of 'hold shift' would be helpful?

'Hit detection is hard so it's more difficult' is not a viable argument. If you want to increase difficulty, some examples would be; increasing monster strength/damage, giving a 'dodge' chance to more nimble creatures, increasing monster health, increasing amount of monsters, etc. Trying to cover for your patchy engine by claiming 'it's meant to be difficult' is a rather irksome ploy.

As for game content itself, other than 'very by the book,' I have no complaints - even that, really, isn't a -complaint- so much as a statement. It's very by the book, can't really give high marks for style, but it shows that you know the genre and can probably make it truly kick next time around.

You've come this far, and I'm confident you can do much better with the next. Go back to check your inspirations again, and maybe consider what elements you can add to make it 'yours' instead of just following the 'one cup blood, a half cup of jump scares, 2 tbsp deformed monsters, mix well' formula.

kennsj responds:

Well, considering it says "a Silent Hill tribute game" under the heading on pretty much every main menu screen, I guess people didn't mention it because it'd be stating the obvious.

While the gameplay might be kind of "by-the-numbers", see the storyline for originality. This is my first finished game, so cut me a little slack in the "formula" department.

As to me "making excuses" for my "patchy engine", I'm serious. Work your way further into the game, and you'll gain access to more effective, easier-to-use weapons.

And anyway, do you see another game on NG like this one? I didn't set out to revolutionize the games industry in making my little Flash game, but I've certainly done something original in terms of the Flash community.

So thanks for the feedback, but I guess I don't take condescension very well.
