Score: 7
"Pretty funny."
date: July 15, 2006
The idea you came up with was pretty funny, I never thought of the idea of an ice cream truck killing some one since “South Park”. It was pretty well done, ice cream truck music one second, and then heavy metal the other. It did make me laugh. The visual part is well done; the animation looks alright, the truck better than the kid though. The 3D of the truck was cool, during the bumps, nice way to stick with details. It was sort of a parody if you ask me, since ice cream trucks don’t usually kill people, on purpose. The music was great. The old nice ice cream truck tune at the beginning, and then “Bang bang” heavy metal music. That also made me laugh. But adding some faded sound effects could help. Like the sound of tires, maybe have the kid say a few lines. Not a must but more of a recommendation. No visible violence or gore but it’s pretty obvious the truck driver wasn’t about to give the kid any ice cream… It only had a play button, well designed but still only that. Try adding a pause button, quality controls, and a scene select. While it may seem a bit pointless, it can help a lot to a movie’s score. In the terms of humor, I really liked this, it actually made me laugh. The surprising way the truck seems at first to evade the kid, then chase him, and finally, wait for him. All of those were well done and were funny. This idea for itself was really original; I have never seen something of this kind personally. The whole idea of a killer ice cream truck driver is not only funny, but also brand new. It was short but diverse. It didn’t get boring or anything, only better and better with each time. Also, a considerable amount of effort put into it. All of the 3D design of the truck and stuff. But the kid needs to be drawn a bit better. Just practice at that. And generally, a great flash I’d love to put in my own favorites, congratulations on the well done second flash on newgronds with a decent score.
Now for my usual detailed report of all the statistics from the reviewing categories and some more (taken from the audio review categories…):
Graphics: 7, Well drawn and animated, pretty much 3D was mostly used with the truck. The kid needs work, make sure the outlines are still made when you have him move his arm or bend the elbow. Because in the movie it seemed to sort of lose the outline when he did. Maybe also if you didn’t him look like a skinny freak of nature it would help. He doesn’t have to be that skinny.
Style: 7, a funny movie, comedy I suppose. I liked the comedy integrated in it.
Sound: 8, Pretty funny as well, first the truck’s tune then the heavy metal as it chases the kid, it swapped very well.
Violence: 7, A good amount of violent behavior. But no actual blood. Funny and possible for some one virtually any age to watch, good work.
Interactivity: 5, Well it had only the play button and I wish it had more but the play button was well designed on the ice cream truck. I kind of laughed when I saw it. Funny again. But really, consider adding more buttons to the movie, such as quality controls and scene select. But still awesome work.
Humor: 9, Very funny film, an ice cream truck tried very hard and seems to run over an innocent kid. A great idea for a movie in my opinion.
Originality: 9, Extremely original idea. Not to mention funny as well. I don’t know about any one else but this is an idea I have never seen before and yet despite being so new is truly funny, congratulations on the good job.
Diversity: 8, For starters, it was pretty short. That I must admit, but even though it was short it wasn’t boring for one bit. First the truck is driving around calm, then strikes, love that idea. Also when the kid runs away and the truck stalks him… Awesome.
Effort: 7, Looks great. You could even strike my remark on outlines, it turns out to indeed be a hard thing to do. Must have taken quite a while to make, and we like every minute of it, now if you could just add a couple more buttons maybe.
Overall: 7, Pretty good movie, not the best, but far from the worst. Keep up the good work in movies my friend.
Author's Response:
Wow. Thanks for the detailed and informative review. I am currently working on a new style for my upcoming flashes that will make it easier to do intense action, animation, and potentially violent.
Due to the success of "The Ice Cream Truck," I am planning either a part 2, or a remake of the origonal.
