read before playing:

this V3 is ONLY to see what yo think of the game in general. i will be sorting out the script soon, for a V3.5, which will (touchwood) have no bugs. I have worked myself into a corner here, as i have done quite a complex script, and whenever i change it, it seems to break :S.
If you are a good scripter and have some free time, and want to help with the bugs, email me at sharpblade1@gmail.com

thanks

"Try Michael Swain's version instead..."

date: March 11, 2008

I'd gotten back into Mastermind because of Michael Swain's The Mastermind Game on NG, so when I tried a search for it again, I came up with this and decided to try it out as well. I was a bit disappointed, maybe because I'd played Swain's version first. Let's see, the graphics are...well I guess they're better than a text version of the game. The background, with words moving here and there on a blue screen, is not all that pretty to look at, and a simple blue screen would have probably looked better. The sounds, I don't know, because I didn't have them on. The interface is what sealed it, though. I thought Swain's color-choosing scheme might have been pulled off better, but loopooi did one worse. Dragging the colored ball of your choice from the right of the screen to the left is in poor taste. If you had 1 ball of each color right underneath your guess input, that would have streamlined the game more. But hey, this is Mastermind, this game is originally a very low key affair to begin with, there's no flashes, no bells and whistles with the boardgame, so should we really expect it with the video game version? Actually, yeah, we should.

Oh dear, i dont know what happened to me in this one i was only able to crack the code on the ninth try but i guess that is better then not passing at all. I thought that your actionscripting has been done really well, and besides the first version i havent seen any problems at all. I thought that the way that you slightly improved the design was subtle yet a nice touch. Music controls were also a good added bonus. I would like if you had alittle congrats flash after you have correctly identified the code and maybe have a bigger celebration the quicker you guess it.

"should have been"

Started. Almost didn't bother playing after reading the bug. Played anyway and won on last peg on my last go.

- The intro is a bit slow. Text should pop in, not take a second to zoom in.
Annoying if you restart it.

--- Sound controls don't seem to work.

- Screen is a bit boring. Maybe add texture.

+++++ I like the game mechanics (the way it's meant to work).

------ The bug you cite is really a game-breaking one.

The bug really should have been sorted before submission.

Once you've done that, maybe consider adding options for # of colours, length of code...

Author's Response:

the sound seems to work fine. maybe its your flash player?

I reviewed your first mastermind, and you said to read the instructions. Well when I have two reds and 2 whites then change my answer to something that I would normally do in a game of mastermind with my friends, it reveals bugs. So not only did I read te intrustion but I've been playing mastermind for yearrs
