actually, It's a reference to WWI. The main fighting tactic of WWII was NOT the trenches, That was WWI. The main cause of this was the invention of the machine gun, troops had to stay low or else be mowed down. He also calls it the great war, this is what WWI was called before WWII, because you can't call it WWI if you don't know if there will be another.
Anyways, great movie, nice and creepy
He's definately refering to WWII, the song at the end is "We'll meet again" by Vera Lynn, she sang it to the troops to keep moral up.
First, I think it's more of a wwIII which began with a nuclear missle launch which explains the barren landscape.
