"You Have Potential!"
date: December 15, 2005
You can draw, so that's a definite plus. You can animate to some extent, which is another plus. However, there are a lot of things wrong with this video.
>>First, I would like to mention, like just about everybody else who has reviewed this, that propeller-driven planes require the propeller to *turn* when they're flying. ;) But that's just a technicality.
>>Second, never in the history of man have there been so many bombers in one place. I mean, think about it. Bombers are slow, and easier to shoot down than some planes, and having them packed up there makes it a LOT easier to hit one - like shooting fish in a barrel, no? Also, this seemed to have a WWII basis, but I'm not even sure if that many bombers were even built during that time.
>>Third, that was an extremely anticlimactic explosion at the end. Sure, it had its humor, but it wasn't that funny, since there's a plethora of videos that end like that on Newgrounds. Not to be blunt, but be more original next time! :)
And DON'T say, "Oh, but this was my first Flash video, I'm still learning!" Such a lazy excuse. You can get away with that on animation and art, but not on content.
Somebody mentioned earlier that it would have looked nicer, during the part where the bombers were flying over the city, if you had put a 20% or 30% alpha white layer over the ground. You said you were new to Flash, and didn't know what they were talking about, so I'll let you in on it, unless you've already learned through experimentation. Alpha refers to a color's level of transparency. This can be changed by opening the Color Mixer toolbar. See the "Alpha" setting beneath the "R," "G," and "B" settings? It's set at 100% by default, which means that it is opaque. (This is all based off of Flash MX, by the way, not Flash 8!) The lower the alpha percentage, the higher the level of transparency. So, what the earlier reviewer meant was that you should have made another layer between the planes and the ground and put a white box over the entire screen, and then set the transparency (alpha setting) to 20 or 30 percent, to give the illusion of distance. I hope that helps in future submissions!
Speaking of which, I think you're only going to get better. You have potential, I'll give you that much! I look forward to your next submission!
