Yes... while Hiro Shitaku is fictional (means, not real...), the remaining goodness in this "edu-mation" (at over seven minutes long) is accurate, and with a bit of comedy, will explore the history and techniques of the Japanese animation industry. I had a lot of fun making it, and I hope everyone enjoy's watching it!

** Disclaimer: to avoid confusion, Hiro was not a real person. However, all of the techniques discussed in this film were instead created by the industry as a whole to deal with their insane production quotas. Learn, laugh, but please don't take this film 100% seriously. Sorry.

Excellently Done, but...

This flash was excellently done, but I'm worried that mixing historical lessons with fictional ideas is dangerous. It was not always clear what was real and what was your creation.

For instance, while swooshy background do indeed make for simplier animation, I doubt they were invented for that reason. Scott McCloud explores this subject in "Animating Comics" -- his reason for it is that using speedlines allows the "camera" to focus on the character, connecting the viewer with him or her. This is unlike, say, an American superhero cartoon, where Superman zips by the "camera" almost unseen.

Now, I know this, and you might know this, but someone else might not. And they might walk away thinking that swooshy backgrounds are just a cheap trick. They tell their friends, their friends tell their friends' friends, and confusion spreads.

If you were to update this Flash animation as a serious exploration of Anime -- its motifs, its icons, its history -- it would be one of the best things Newgrounds has ever seen. I hope you consider doing so.

Wow! You sure really know a good deal. I love Scott McCloud's work and agree with you whole-heartedly. I never really meant this to be a definative work, but more an interesting and humorous launching point into more education. I hope your butterfly effect of misinformation does not occur that harshly, but I will certainly include a sort of disclaimer on any future films I do. And thanks for the kind words!

I would have given this a higher rating if I hadn't had to rate it just to read a review to find out HOW to get it to play.. It was frustrating to say the least.

Bravo!

Well drawn! This pointed out to me alot of things in anime I saw, just never took note of because it fits so well! Did realy good!

-Note: Thes one little thing! The preloader loaded up, and no play button showed, and the movie didnt play! Some people who dont know how to rightclick and play are gonna be a little cheesed off, but its easy to fix!
