"Pretty good."

date: February 11, 2001

I enjoyed the game. Graphics could have been better though. Also if you die in battle and just right-click, play you won't actually die.

Author's Response:

Yes, that's true. Newgrounds policy is such that the right-click menu is forced into being shown for all movies, for the benefit of people who have trouble programming preloaders. You'll need to play the game on the honour system..

"Fucking Genius"

date: February 9, 2001

This is fucking awesome, even if not the first Flash RPG, it's definitely the best one. i haven't played part 2 yet, but i think it will kick as much ass as this does, no offense to Street Life or VGDC(they kick ass too) but this i have to say is the best fucking portal entry yet

"1000 lines of coding my but!"

date: January 24, 2001

thats what i call bullshit, i've seen people use 50 lines of coding in 20 level RPG's! trust me coding is not needed much in things like this, this person is trying to show off and brag about how "hard" (more like... easy) it was to make this, people, people, don't be fooled, flash is not that hard. gimme a break

Author's Response:

A quick estimation of the FLA file gives about 1,650 lines for the engine. There's probably a few hundred more in the map data.

I don't think you understand as much about programming as you claim to. It might be easy to say, "Oh, a person walking back and forth on a scrolling map, and occasionally they're interrupted by an encounter! That's so simple!", but there's more juggling of information than meets the eye here. You have to program hitting the edge of the map, determining each area's particular monster set, turning the item menu on or off when the character moves or stops, and hooking hitting the map edge together with turning on the item menu; a checklist of little things that add to a game's complexity. Likewise, there's a lot of things going on in all parts of the game just to make it look smooth and easy on the outside.

But perhaps I'm giving the benefit of the doubt to an obvious troll who seeds Newgrounds with crap reviews and has never submitted a movie of his own.
