"Decent game"

by: Kenrae
date: April 3, 2008

The game is simple, but good for a one go. The first half is too easy, then it becomes a more interesting, but it need some more options so that you must change tactics from monster to monster. Oh, and I liked the end, now I want a second part ;).

Author's Response:

Cool, thanks for the review and the suggestions. I will keep them in mind. Glad you liked the game. I am making a sequel at the moment. It might take a few months though...

"good but...."

it gets sooo boring when you are constantly killing things with nothing to make the game better
it needs upgrades to your character and a mute button as the music gets very frustrating.

March 18, 2008

Author's Response:

Wow, you are the first person to complain about the music. Well in this game the music is a part of the game and very much like a movie, if you dont like the music you will have to turn your speakers off, just like with a movie :)

Lots of people have been saying that upgrades and more moves would make this much better. I agree and will take it into consideration with my next game.
Thanks for the review :)

"Great feeling, bad execution."

date: March 23, 2008

For initial criticism, I have to say that too much of the game involved running. I swear, there was a 15 minute long run with only three monsters (slight exaggeration, but you get the point).

The intro idea was great. I'd go as far to say it was a perfect concept. It just took too long. I just watched tv while holding down the right arrow key until I got to something interesting.

One thing that stands out is that the special attack bar refills too quickly. When you use it, it's practically at 25% already from the one monster you just killed with it. Also, the quick-attack is far more powerful than the "strong" attack. Since the enemy has poor hit-recovery, it's just too easy to spam A (holding it down, even) putting the target effectively in a stun-lock.

On a more major issue: when trying to jump over arrows or axes thrown at you, it would never work properly. The projectile would go underneath me, but suddenly it skipped to an animation of me being hit. Terrible collision detection.

For a melee-combat side scroller, having to hold down the arrow key was annoying. It should've been more like the old arcade versions of Simpsons, Ninja Turtles, Xmen, Gauntlet, etc where you move a bit, get attacked, move on, etc.

More customization content needed to be added to the game. It's very, very easy to include item drops, different weapons, and/or a skill system with the foundation that you have in the game so far. Why do you think World of Warcraft is so popular? It's because you get a sense of instant gratification when gaining levels, experience, or points. In any event, some instance of this would be nice in this type of game.

Great review, thanks!
I agree with all your points and will try to improve on the flaws and include some new elements into the sequel for this game. The foundation is set, and I can build on it and try to fix some annoying bugs like the flaw with jumping and the terrible hit detection...

"Not bad; needs some work."

Here's the monster's patterns, and how to kill them:
Small Tree Guy: Runs at you, swings twice. Kill him by hitting him with a heavy slash while he's still far out, then crouch. Wait for his TWO hits to hit your shield, then pop him a new one.

Small Dark Guy: Runs at you, rolls under your heavy slash, bites you. Kill him by crouching as soon as you see him, let him bite your shield. Swing lightly, he'll roll by - hit him with a heavy slash on his way past you.

Wolves: These guys LEAP at you! DO NOT TRY TO HIT THEM AS THEY'RE COMING IN! Crouch as SOON as you see them, then let them get up next to you. Then just repeat a pattern of block-quick-block-quick until they die. Four hits.

Spiders: Drop from the ceiling or run at you on the ground. Very light, so any hit knocks them far back. Crouch as soon as you see them, let them hit your shield. Knock them back with a light hit, then follow up IMMIDEATELY with a heavy hit to kill them.

Goblins:
Goblins are a huge threat if you get several of them waling on you in a pattern such that you don't have time to lift your shield and get in a hit. Other than that...

Little guy with a shield blocks immideately after he gets hit. Best way to kill him is to strong hit him while he's still far out, then crouch, wait for him to hit you, and light-hit him to kill him.

Guy with a spear is a bit of a pain. Crouch and wait for him to hit you, then fire off a light swing, but let it finish - don't crouch until you see blood. Rinse and repeat.

Tomahawk throwing guy is a pain in the ass, as is the shortbow goblin guy - they're essentially identical, just different pictures. They stand away and shoot at you. That's it, really. Move in while you can, crouch, and then light- swing them to death while blocking their hits.

Big fat guy with the spiked-ball-and-chain is an annoying PITA. He has a HUGE hit range. Crouch and move in, then hit him while he's recovering, which fortunately is also huge. Go ahead and strong hit him if he's all that you're facing.

Big fat guy who rolls spiked-balls at you is an annoying PitA. He's like the tomahawk/archer guy, but stronger and more durable. Deal with him the same way. He's also the only enemy who's attacks you CAN jump over. (Don't even TRY on the others.)

The gubbin chieftain is dirt-easy. Just crouch, wait for his hit to be blocked, light hit him. Fire off your LIMIT BREAKER!!!!! when you get the chance. Rinse, lather, repeat. I did it without him even HURTING me. Goblins are only dangerous in numbers, after all, and he's alone when you fight him.

Cave of Darkness Dwellers:
Yellow drip: Yes, it's DANGEROUS! Don't be hit!

Spiders: Just like the forest, but now they try to flank you. They can be a pain in the ass.
Boss Spider: Fuck if I know! He's HUGE!.....

And at that point I lost interest, because this got boring and lame. If someone wants to pick up from here, be my guest.

March 18, 2008

Author's Response:

Those are sure some good ways to get past the different enemies. Too bad you lost interest at the spiderqueen. This would have made a good walkthrough :)

it was alright for a game. But if this is going to be the only game for rise of a knight ill have to give it a lower score. The ending of the game is so lame, it needs something else to follow it.

May 4, 2008

Author's Response:

The ending was so weird because I had to cut the game off somewhere because the filesize was getting so huge which would make the loading time unbearably long. A sequel is underway with lots of improvements and new stuff as well as a conclusion to the story off course :)

"No Masterpiece"

date: March 20, 2008

This game showed that some effort went into it, but not enough to raise above the masses. It was nice for what it was, a hack'n'slayer with some storyline to move things along, but there were some botherments. For example the guards attack range. I could slash stuff that was a good foot away from meeting with my swords point, whats up with that? Also the light attack animation was not good. The way he was doing it would have probably popped his shoulder joint. I liked the heavy strike though. The ending was not all that bad as well, although it openly screams "SEQUEL!" all the way. One thing I think you should improve were the bosses. The only one that was slightly challenging was the spider, the others were way to easy, compared to the difficulty of the levels.

Author's Response:

Very good points you make. Yeah, there's a sequel under construction, and Im trying to work on all the shortcomings of this game and improve upon it for the sequel. Thanks for the review!

Smooth Game play but the story was a little stale....

March 19, 2008

Author's Response:

I agree the storyline was very classic and not original even though there are some twists in the end. I didnt concentrate tto hard on the narration either. I just had fun with it and saw where it was taking me. Anyway, thanks for the review :)

"Mediocre"

date: March 22, 2008

and here's why:

1.) very un-origional storyline, a dude saves a princess, whoop-dee-doo.

2.) art was very basic (but backgrounds were ok), the character looked very easy to draw and not very detailed, we don't even know his name or if he knew the other guard well.

3.)gameplay wasn't very creative, all you had to do was block and spam the "A" key to kill everything, most of the other attacks took too long and just got you killed.

4.) too much walking, not enough action, sure it's a very pretty background, but this is an action game, not an art gallery.

5.) music was good but you didn't make it now did you?

Overall this game was far too generic to be of any real entertainment value.

May 4, 2008

Author's Response:

Sorry to disappoint. No I didnt make the music. The amazing MaestroRage did that. His music rules! Anyway, I agree that the storyline was a bit unoriginal in that classical save the princess kinda way, but that's the way I wanted to go, and a lot fo twists comes in the end that changes things a bit. Hopefully I wont disappoint you so much with the sequel...
