"nice but,"

date: March 13, 2008

Uh oh I'm cornered next to my castle with no life left... Oh, whew, holy shield is done recharging.
Holy shield!
.... holy shield?
...holy shield!?!??
*DEAD*
*6 giant skeletons get 15 free seconds to rape my castle, they only need 3*

I agree, great concept but ruined by the wait and bait thing... Everything was going great until i got raped by the aforementioned bug... It's way too easy, but difficult in bad ways... The enemies have too much life... So it becomes: use all of your spells (fire wall with holy shield, and fuel with fireball work great) then alternate slashing, and pressing down to dodge his attack, then back up to attack again, all while you wait for spells to recharge... rinse repeat for five minutes.

I'm somewhat pissed... I leveled everything so that I could unlock fire angel, then got rpaed by a bug, and I'm not going back through the entire game. Can someone at least tell me what fire angel does?

$20 says that this game will be on the front page within a week!
You just need to be able to move a little when you are attacking, or at least have the attacks take less time.

"NOT BAD"

date: March 13, 2008

beat it on my second try, very good concept but needs a bit of tweaking, one thing that bugged me a little is during wave 39 i leveled up again and had no more spells to take, also after about the 20th wave i dont think i ever really swung my sword it was all running around till spells recharged,

maybe some character stat increases too, or just a little more in depth overall and this would be perfect

"Just needs polish"

date: March 13, 2008

Great graphics, good sound and some nice AI, everything a good game should have.
Problem: Game balance. It has timing problem up the wazoo!

To beat the game I ignored the damage skills. After you have the healing side you get lightning. With Holy armor and lightning you have the game beat for a while. I could jump into a crowd with my temporary invincibility and then, once they were in a nice group I could zap them all.
From this point on the big bosses weren't bosses but time wasters while my lightning recharged. I love the fact that they pull back and swing, giving the nimble adventurer time to get out of the way. It lets you bait them back and forth across the bridge taunting them.
The problem is that when you get a group of them the strategy doesn't change, except that you might need to heal or use you invincibility again it one of the group strays from chasing you and decides that the castle is more interesting. In the later levels I actually used meteor and fire angle because getting them was like cutting lightning's recharge time in half. I used used all of them for the last level.

I guess the point of this is that the recharge rate are all so slow that the game isn't about swinging your sword, it's about slowly running in circles while your real weapons recharge. This meant letting monsters live, while I danced in circles.

I liked how you were trying to switch things up with the green mages that turn you into a pig and some of the little men that could run fast, but unfortunately their differences were minor when considering the overall game.

In general defense games have two things that the player has to balance:
How quickly enemies approach and how much damage they can take. Consider how long it takes you to respawn (10 seconds). This is enough time for every kind of enemy to get from one side of the map to the other. Consider that fireballs deal easily 1/3 the damage of a sword but take 15 times as long to recharge. These numbers aren't close so there are no decisions for the player. There is A winning strategy, just one of them (which is bait and recharge).

How to improve it: I don't think that just cutting all the recharge times in half would solve much. I would suggest making each more reasonable. For the damage it does fireball could go from 15 to 2. Healing was well paced as were the upper end, but waiting 20 seconds for a barrel that looked big but did little was disappointing. By then end I had all but given up on the sword for doing anything but landing the killing blow one everything had recharged. Making your sword improve might help.

Still 7/10. Still awsome.

Thanks for the great detailed review. Most of the problems you mentioned are probably to do with the whole overall game, and no snmall change is going to fix them, I should have had it better balanced from the beginning.

"Ok,so like..."

Idea is good, although it would be awesome to add some things here, and change others. Most likely You wont do those anyway, but I will list few.

What do we lack? - Idea of knight growing in power with each level is easy, but would be cooler to see it like this:Lvl up,You get 5 stat points to distribute, choose what You want.Either that,or some upgrades to equipment.
Skill points and skills are ok.

Balance - as others stated before, bosses are somewhat ridiculous, sure they are strong, and thats ok.But amount of hp they got and exp You get for killing them does not match too well. For guy it takes 3-4 min of evading and slashing, one small raise in exp is just unfair.

Adjustment - I got feeling that for opponents there is no difference where are You pointer at vertical lane,as long as You're near them. What do I mean?
Check out bosses for example, they are preparing to hit me,I rush down below them to other side of bridge, and still got hit, interesting.

That's nearly all....last ting,I passed the game without sweat, while others had problems with opponents, strength difference and so.How?
"Beware of my mighty pause button!!!" - this is interesting bug,it stops time, but not the counter for Your skills recharge.Need Holy Armor often?Np,just pause and wait 30 sec till till recharges. So You can use it right away.Try it,You will know what I mean.

Thats all, don't take that whole bashing personally,I liked Your game and idea alone, but it needs a bit more work to make it great stuff.
It would be really pleasing to see that You upgrade it.Good luck with it man.

Clo

Author's Response:

Yeah balancing was the hardest part I found, and I still haven't done it well enough it seems. If I gave more exp for the bosses, than I'd be lowering it for the other units, so in the end you're getting the same amount really, but I guess the illusion of getting more for bosses should be there. I'll do this from now on.

Fixed the pause glitch now.

"Good Game!"

date: March 13, 2008

I like enjoy a good defense game, and this gave me what I crave.

A few issues that I found.

Slow. I don't mean it wasn't difficult, because it got pretty damn hard later on, but its speed was lacking. I think it might of been the attack and how long it took him to swing each time.

Mana Pool. Instead of using cool downs use a pool of mana, I like the idea of CDs, but sometimes it was a pain, because at the end it was pretty difficult to keep alive while the baddies where rolling me on the bridge. Or maybe a mixture of the two.

Assistance. Everyone loves a hand.

Power levels. Instead of having two healing spells, have one that is tiered. Same with all the spells, higher tier higher bonus.

Ease up on "Boss" difficulty, your giving no more exp for a boss, yet your making them really difficult. Bump up the exp or lower the difficulty.

What I liked?

Good concept, having a hero that defends his home. I liked the use of spells and very nicely animated very appealing to play. With some balance and some tweaks I can see this becoming a very popular game.

Keep on creating!

"Melee sucked"

date: March 13, 2008

It was an okay game, but by about level 15 or so melee became useless it hit for so little. It came down to just spamming your spells to win, and the Satan's Touch and Ball of God were basically "Beat the wave" buttons so no real strategy was needed for the game at all.

A good idea might be upgrade the melee each level, make big baddies worth more experience as everything seems to give the same, and make those last few spells harder to get or far longer to charge. Also, that little ending you give is like something from an NES game, at least a nice visual or something of a real close on the attack would help. If you gave the game a story, then you could give it a real ending. Lastly, a boss for the last level in a game like this is always cool. One that you would have had to deflect his spells or something to hurt him could have been neat.
