"good music lesson"

date: March 16, 2008

pretty much everything I learned in the first week of music theory. I agree with the guy a few reviews down about the note value names. While those names are older names that have been around for a long time, and to some people it would be easier than thinking in terms of number measurement, the standard is using whole, half, quarter, eighth, and so on, so it could be confusing to some people if they learn it as semebreive, minim, crochet, and quaver. Also, I prefer no echo with the piano notes, but that's more preference than anything else as I like clean tones rather than what you have which is pretty and can be used just as well, but using a pedal on the piano is definitely not a beginner lesson. Overall I liked it a lot, good lesson, I really knew all that stuff already, but I'm glad that maybe some people with little knowledge of music can see this and maybe learn a little more.

"Good job!"

date: March 13, 2008

I really like this, and am looking forward to more. I also agree with the previous statement that this series of tutorials needs a qwerty piano interface, and if you don't know how to do that and aren't willing to learn, PM me, and I'd be willing to code it in for you because I think it would be a great improvement for this series of tutorials. It would also be nice to have the sound bytes stop playing when the key/mousebutton is released, which I could also code in if you like.

I highly suggest learning actionscript or getting a programmer. Other things that are possible using actionscript are "games" where you guess intervals by ear, guess notes by ear or by written note, try to play out written notes, write notes out and have the computer play them, try to get the beats right, etc. etc. etc....
If you had time, you could even build an entire sequencer within flash, though that would be a huge project if there were many different instruments with all available octaves.

I'm hoping you'll continue these as far as possible. Again, let me know if you need any help.

Thanks, I might just take you up your offer. I too think that the Qwerty interface would be great, as would a release mechanism.

Thanks for the review, I'll PM you if I need any ActionScript.

"Awesome"

by: Repost
date: March 12, 2008

Nicely done. The layout was clear enough so nothing was cluttered. The piano sound was nice. Perhaps in the next tutorial, you can include time signatures and the bass clef. Dynamics could also be included. Great job.

Author's Response:

Thanks.

All the things you listed WILL be covered in the next tutorial, so nothing to worry about.

"Music Theory for Newgrounders"

date: March 12, 2008

Recently, I took a college course in Music Theory. Your tutorial covered the basics of what was covered in the first week.
It would have been nice to have covered more than one cleft and one time signature, and showing an example of the two-handed piano staff (called the Grand Staff) would have been a big plus. However, you can always cover that in future tutorials, so no biggie.
The "try it out" parts were the best parts of this tutorial. It is important in learning music that one get the ear for it by listening to what the notation sounds like when played.

By the way, the names my course gave for the note values are...
SEMEBREVE = Whole note
MINIM = Half note
CROTCHET = Quarter note
QUAVER = Eighth note

The names you give might be the historical names of the note values, actually.
Anyway, keep up the good work. MUSIC ROCKS!

Author's Response:

Thanks for your input!

As you said, I'll cover those things in more detail in future tutorials.

The way you named the notes is right, I used simpler names to begin with. I'll add the ones you said in the next tutorial.

Thanks for the review.

MUSIC ROCKS!

"Sounds good"

date: March 12, 2008

A little piano like interface(Qwerty instead of mouse) and the ability to record the keys we press would be nice features to add to the following chapters.Anyway I think this is a pretty neat and clever tutorial.

Author's Response:

Thanks for the review.

As for the QWERTY and recording features, I would add them, but I can't write ActionScript. I learned some basic features while making this, but your suggestions may be beyond my level. I might try the Flash Forum.

Thanks for the ideas.

"Is a good tutorial"

by: serio
date: March 12, 2008

I give it a 10 because is a good tutorial, not as begginer friendly as I tought but is very clear. The piano is a good concept and the explanations are very easy to follow. Graphics are OK since is just text, the sounds are very nice, and I also vote 5 because having tutorials on music helps a lot not only here on the flash side, but on the audio portal as well. Keep it up dude! Why not trying a guitar instead of a piano for the next one! , and maybe some tabs, chords, etc!

March 13, 2008

Author's Response:

Thanks for the review!

The one problem is that I can't play guitar, so it'll be more difficult for me to write.
That doesn't mean I won't try, though!

The guitar won't be covered in the next tutorial, but I'll use the idea in the future.

Thanks for your input.

"Good start"

I would definitely like to see everything put into different selectable sections, especially if you do get into more advanced stuff later.

I'll think about it for the next one.

"Very Good!"

date: March 12, 2008

I played The Metal Gear Theme on the Piano that you can Play, Though not the Full theme.

the MGS theme is: B, A, G , A, B, E, B, A, G, A, B

you cant go Farther, because the Keyboard is Too Short. :P

"I'll keep watch for more. :D"

date: March 12, 2008

Yay, I learned something.
I think I'll continue to look at your tutorials.
I've always wanted to make music, but I don't really have anything to play any on.
The little interactive piano was fun.

It was good, and I understood pretty much all of it. Keep at em, I'll be using them. :D

"Functional and informative"

date: March 12, 2008

This is quite a novel idea, and your tutorial is works well and is fairly easy to understand, but I feel it's somewhat lacking in depth and structure.

Be careful not to jump ahead of yourself and use terminology or concepts that you haven't already covered. You should plan and write out the structure of all your tutorials together so as to create something that's comprehensive and easy for beginners.

Try to spend a decent amount of time explaining each aspect as opposed to skipping over things quickly, and try to remind the user of previous lessons where required.

March 13, 2008

Author's Response:

Thanks for the ideas.

While making this there were several times I had to look back to check if I had covered something, finding that I hadn't.

There was much final editing done to try and keep it as streamlined as possible.

For the next one I'll make sure I don't skip myself ahead.
