"Heavy on the Portal there... [749]"
date: August 21, 2008
And yeah, you mentioned that in your comments. And I claim Portal as my fave game from Orange Box (it's listed as my fave game on Steam, as well, though I have 25 games, including the great Bioshock, therein) even though I have 10x more playtime on HL2+eps and Team Fortress 2.
So... yeah, nothing wrong with Portal, it is brilliant gameplay condensed into a tiny gem... but I have a feeling that more people who'd love your flash would find it if you had named this "Still Alive" or "Portal song" or... anything more accurate/descriptive.
"ANYWAY... this [flash] is great."
You rely upon ye olde lyrics scroll a bit too much in parts, but then again the final credits of Portal rely almost entirely on lyrics scroll during this song (the ASCII art Valve put in... adds a lot, though), but I liked your use of a super-simplified monitor face during much of it... interesting assemblage of "still alive" dead folks at the end of your flash, too.
But the main reason I'm actually reviewing this... and the main reason I enjoyed your flash... is that it introduced me to Coulton's Skullcrusher Mountain, which I hadn't heard. My gf and I loved Portal and Still Alive, of course, and I've heard through the nerd grapevine that Coulton is the MAN. A geek musician right up there with Flight of the Conchords, Moxy Fruvous, and They Might be Giants.
But... sadly... I only had heard Still Alive, the remix, and his acoustic version with his own singing. i.e. three versions of one song........ until now. Finally... FINALLY, I have heard a 2nd song by him. And it is excellent. Both in terms of its folksy/rock/country hybrid feel.... but even more especially due to its lyrical genius. It's like watching The Venture Brothers (a show my gf is even more fanatical about than I am myself).
You, sir... have done us both a huge service by putting this song in your flash as a 2nd bonus song during the credits.
:::listens to it for the fourth time in the past day::: Win. Pure win.
