"Great tut."

date: July 6, 2008

Very well done. I myself and learning flash and I never knew about the onoin skin thingy and that will help a lot. This tutorial was clear, with corresponding pics and animations. I liked it.

Suggestions: some ppl don't like music in tuts. However, I like to listen to music while learning. a choice to play music would have been great. since its optional, ppl who don't like music and shut it off.

"Great!!"

date: July 6, 2008

Great tutorial, and very helpful. Im sure this will help lots of upcoming sprite flash artists in the near future. We dont see too many good sprite flashes nowadays. :(

Ths tutorial was very clear, nice black bacround, coupled with occasional animation and pictures. It was very easy to understand and very clear. The lack of music was good, as i have looked through too many tutorials with annoying music in the backround.

Overall a great tutorial. Nice work!!

"I was pleasantly surprised"

by: Bezman

I was surprised and impressed at this tutorial - it seems well written; easy to follow and the web address was great.

I appreciated the lack of music - I feel more folk should do the same rather than wasting megabytes on an entire song. Lets us listen to our own music or learn in silence, if that's more conducive for our own learning.

It seemed easy to follow along - I knew most of the features already, but even had I not, I'd have been able to follow along no problem.

I'd disagree with a few of the choices you make - I'd personally either use the transform tool (q) whilst holding down shift to keep the proportions, or type in a number into the transform box. Similarly, I disagree that limiting the onion skin to one previous frame made it any easier and I'd use F6 for making new frames. Though folk don't need to know the shortcuts immediately, it'd be worth mentioning them!

The main point, though, is that your system worked.

I'd suggest you tell folk how to tween the movieclips to move Mario across the screen or just have a ore motivational end frame, maybe telling folk that they can now use those techniques to carry on and make a movie...

Though the tutorial seems good, it lacks gravity when it's your only submission - if you had a sprite movie that you linked to, or maybe a short 10s example movie to inspire us and show that you know what you're talking about.

Regardless, this is one of the better submissions I've seen. Good work.

Author's Response:

Thanks. Well the having no flash is a long story :p. 2 things manly. I don't have the concentration to work on things for a really long time, but I actually did a minute of animation, but had a harddrive crash. Hmm I'm thinking of remaking this tutorial with some things you mentioned and other people mentioned. Also if I add a sound, it will be a loop no bigger then 300kb or something. I could go into more dept indeed with movie tweens and backgrounds looping, but that's hard to explain. I know this tutorial doesn't prove I can animate, but I know I can :P Besides the main fact I made this tutorial, is wen I was looking at collabs to join, and collabs I joined (didn't want co-auth), these basics were done wrong. And wen these things go wrong, these basic things, then nothing good will come out of it. Sorry for ranting xD, thanks for the review.

"Nothing New"

date: July 4, 2008

Pardon me for not really liking this or finding it all that intresting but from what I can say is that there is nothing really new here, there are many sprite tutorials around and well this might explain it a little diffrently, it isn't really all that new to me. That's the major problem with it, other than that though, the presentation seems okay, but I question the use of the Wright sprite.

The lack of audio although does make it smaller, it also makes it less intresting, try to find a small loop and use that for audio and add a mute button for people who don't want to hear the audio. Everything else seems to look okay and explained pretty well too, although I'd do it a diffrent way, everyone is diffrent.

Some parts ARE new. I checked almost all sprite toturials and they skipped a few things. Oh and almost no constructive criticism in sight.

"Very nice"

by: Shanus
date: July 4, 2008

A very nice tutorial, packed with lots of tips and easy to used information.

I really liked how you did the layout, worked very well and the contrast between the text and the background worked very well unlike most other tutorials I've seen. Really liked the high quality pictures you used and the hand animated ones too. And the sprites looked well too. :P

It was missing sound, I know you said you didn't add any to keep the file size down but it would've been a great addition and kept your mind off things.

Overall, an excellent sprite tutorial, one of the best I've seen, hopefully you'll do more :D

I've never really been one for tutorials, as I've never really had much of a use for them. I think that you've given a nice selection of information about the use of and manipulation of sprites.

I would have given better information about the how to, with animations of the mouse pointer moving about the screen and showing where to click in an animated form - I'm not really one for seeing the sprites move as they should on an endless loop, to show you what you should be after completing the instructions.

Some sort of musical addition would be nice as well - you can find plenty of ambient in the Audio Portal that you would find suitable

An example and further information on animating. Might be an idea. Yea I could have added a ambient loop to the thing, I will next time.

"Very Helpful"

This was a solid tutorial, lots of good content. It may not have had all the bells and whistles that you'll see in some other tutorials, but the content was just as good, if not better and that's all that matters. :P
You really did a good job of taking someone who wants to learn how to animate sprites by the hand and showing them the step-by-step process of how its done. A lot of tutorials I've looked at skip out on certain steps, or explain things in a way that is a bit "hazy" but you managed to avoid that weakness. I enjoy writing walkthroughs for video games, so I know a good explanation when I see it! XP
The only tiny little criticism I have is with the audio. There is none! You should slap a good, catchy looping song in this thing and it will really be complete. :)
Overall, this was an above average tutorial for its content alone. You did a great job on this. Good work!

Author's Response:

Thanks for the compliment :D. I know I should add audio, but just with a mute button for people who want it. This tutorial could help so many flash newbs with their spriting xD. Cool that you write walktroughs for games, I don't have the patience for that :P
