Well, I feel quite safe to call this one GODLIKE.
Despite having a bit boring interface it packs an incredible amount of info and proves itself to be extremely useful (the only one in my faves now, yay).
Definetly deserves a front page and a place in the top 50 which is sadly quite far away....:(

One small thing: a printable version would be nice so you could read this anywhere, anytime.

"It's finally out ;)."

I've Pmed Tom, to put this on front page, it thoroughly deserves it. Loads of info, well explained and brilliantly laid out. An enormous amount fo effort went into this, and you deserve a lot more recognition then you have.

Nice work.

"Very informative."

date: March 1, 2007

Thanks for writing this tutorial. I hope it will be recognised, put in the tutorial page and at least placed on the frontpage. I obviously haven't read all 800 pages, but i did read the things that interested me and it was a good read. The tutorial tackles many subjects and can be useful to a large audience of flash animators. This is also the first time i read about storytelling and introduction techniques in a flash-tut.
If you're a flash animator, there is always something that you can still learn from this!

"nice BUT"

date: March 1, 2007

i liked it, nice tutorial. but it didnt have anything i searched for, (this will make me sound a little bit scary) it didnt have explosions, blood, gore or special effects and thats basically what i want to find out more about so in version 2 can you put some in?

graphics: well there wasnt really any

style: i like tutorials

sound: nice choice of music

Violence: no explosions, blood, gore or special effects

interactivity: obvious

humor: its not supposed to be funny anyway

nice just needs what i said and it would be perfect. im somewhat an experianced animator now though. (1 year and about 3 months)

Author's Response:

Its about scripting, so any talk of violence would be a bit out of place.

I realize an actionscript tutorial won't appeal to everyone, especially people who are into the graphic side of things. Thanks for the review nonetheless though.

"The Tutorial of all Tutorials"

date: February 23, 2007

Wow that was amazing, if that tutorial was in book form I'd buy it in a heartbeat. It had everything a person needed to know in flash. It was like I was in the flash class I always wanted to be in. Awesometastic job.
Are you gonna make it downloadable?

Author's Response:

Thanks. If I do ever put it up for download, I'll be sure to make it bigger (since file-size doesn't mean as much) and add some other nice features.

If there really are people who would have bought it as a book, I've really made a big mistake. I should have been talking to publishers :)

At some point in the near future I might make a security tutorial or maybe make a more interactive tutorial (where the user can type in code and get a response). But this is probably still a ways away. I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for the review.

"Epic indeed... but too much like a book perhaps"

You can't possibly question the quality of the information here, the only thing you could knock here is you not making more use of interactivity flash can offer. You strike me more as a theory/coding based flash user which is why there isn't more visual explaination beyond some screenshots. The information is good without question it's just your method of presenting it might need revising. I'm favoriting this for obvious reasons, but if you were to team up with someone like the people behind "The Big Fat Tutorial" you'd have the best tutorial flash movie on the whole website!

Author's Response:

I considered screencasting during the development, but I opted against it because I don't really think that's what I'm best at. I think I'm more of a verbal person.

One idea I've had that seems interesting would be to allow users to type in code, and then have a system that analyzes it. For example, if the user typed in "function r(password:String) {
if(password == ;
}
it would tell the user that there's a security threat because the user could enter in the text: "1 OR true" and have the if finish as password == 1 OR true, which will always be true, meaning the user need not enter the right password.

Also, I could have a system which analyzes the code and tells the user if there are any pitfalls, and allows them to test specific functions and debug them. Maybe...

But that's all very complicated, and I'd probably make a whole new project for that, since it'd be quite an undertaking.

"I felt like giving you 10's :D"

date: February 22, 2007

simply because of the effort going into making 800 PAGES OF TUTORIAL just to help us lowly flash noobs :D

All my 5 are belong to this :D

Author's Response:

Thanks. It is quite long... My only real goal is that I get into the flash tutorials collection and get some kind of award (that would be neat).

Now, although I do not have flash, I must say this will be the first guide I look for when I'm in need of assistance. It was very informative, and could help me understand the basics at least a hundred fold better. You must have put a lot of effort into this for 800+ pages, and for that we all owe you thanks for lending a helping hand to some. Wonderful job, your time was well spent.
