"There's a fine line between casually experimenting"

by: sqykly

and taking WAY TOO MUCH ACID. Don't ask me to draw it.

This is what happens when the Mario brothers (a la their GBA game) get together with Doctor Seuss to watch Fear and Loathing!

But seriously, there are some really neat, and completely original, mechanics here, and you get many, many points for that. The view switch in battle for the different characters I have never seen before. The timed turn system vaguely reminds me of the WORMS series, but is unique in its implementation. Like some other reviewers have noted, I did feel that there's a lot of un-tapped potential there for more interaction between characters. In fact, I was a little disappointed when I didn't have to blow the boss's mask off with the bomb shot combo before I could damage it with the hammer. I also agree with the other reviewers that the controls felt a little awkward. The WASD/mouse thing is in right now, but when you throw in character switching and different views, it just feels like there must be a simpler way to do it.

The art, man! I can't get over it. I've never seen anything like that, not even when I read Dr. Seuss all the time!

The bottom line is that you've got something unique here, and I think I speak for everyone's curiosity when I say that I want to see it developed further. With all the creativity in these environments, characters, and gameplay, you can definitely go further with the mechanics you've introduced. I want to knock stuff over with the hammer, use the gun to drop a chandelier on the giant worm's head... blow the mask off the boss's face! If you can make something like this, then you can definitely make something where I can do that.

Author's Response:

Wow! Yes I felt the same way when I was developing the battles, but it's also a huge challange for me, since Im not a programmer beyond what I learned to make this game.

Development for Ch.2 started in January, and it should be out by fall 08. Its a much larger game!

"Unique for a casual game."

date: October 26, 2007

Very unique for a casual game. I thought your 2 character - different genre of play system was unique and very risky (in a good experimental kind of way.) Bottom line it succeeds in some ways and feels lacking in others. For most of the game the side scrolling system is enough to get through 99.99% of the play and I only used the 1st person to finish off the end boss. Maybe it would be more exciting to see what kinds of limits you can push to make both play styles integrated more deeply into the gameplay and necessary without being just there for the sake of...

For example - what if in 1st person view, the player has a greater view of the battlefield, enabling certain actions that the side scroller view alone can not achieve. Maybe he can interact with the environment in clever ways that allow the other player to execute actions otherwise unavailable. This might give incentives to "explore" the very interesting dreamscape through the eyes of both characters instead of leaning heavily on one.

The only other critical comment I have has to do with the interfacing of the game. I had to actually play to figure out all the nooks and crannies of control. If the system of switching between players is to be a big portion of the game experience, the transitioning (how players interface with the game to make seamless transitions) will probably be an important one. Not that this was unplayable - far from it. But I think it can be polished even more.

The mood/style of artwork paints a very surreal dream landscape that works for your narrative and although I didn't play the previous game I didn't feel too left int he dark either so good job.

There is an awful lot of stencil work going on in casual games... basically the same game with different graphics and stories but your game stands out.

Original and Refreshing. Which is why I was motivated to write this very long commentary on how I felt. (^_^)

I hope you continue to work on this experiment. I'm really looking forward to the next installment and seeing the improvements based on what you've learned with this project. Great job!

9/10 (reserving the 1 point in anticipation of how you guys change the next version.) (^_-) /

wow, this was an amazing game, i hope you do improve a little bit on the drawing, dont get me wrong i love your style of drawing, its kind of like trippy but unique, just saying it it was smootehr itd be great, also the free roaming was a good idea but didnt work out to well, i got stuck a lot and its was a bit sloppy, another thing i found a little tough was the controle scheme hitting z and x to chang chars was a hassel, i ende up switching to hunk and shooting all my enemies except for the boss. which looked pimp. wow i wrote a lot :P (ps hate to be a nagger but are you going to put in something like a leveling system, i think it would work well for this great, great game!)

I really liked it, it enabled a kind of free roam thing, (which i love in turn-based games) and the music was great

"Great game!"

date: October 21, 2007

Man, this game is amazing. If it wasn't for a certanin BSS post, I would have never found it out. However, your link to the comic doesn't work, so if there is any other way to find it, then the info would be appreciated. All my 5's are belong to this!

P.S. Level100, when you shoot the bomb shot, it imbeds itself into the enemy like a normal shot, but when you hit that enemy with Zeke's hammer, they take heavy explosive damage which is designated by an explosion effect and a boom.

"Glitch"

date: October 21, 2007

This game is amazing. The gameplay is genius and entertaining, and the art and music left me mesmerized. The sea of games in these days is buried in grimey coal, and I always love to see a glowing diamond of originality emerge from the dark. Thank you for letting me play.

Also, I found a strange glitch: I ran over by the stairs that lead to the blue ledge at the start, and Zeke sort of ran through the side of the stairs and on to nothing. I couldn't get back onto the ground area to finish the game, but it was amusing to run all over the walls and sky nonetheless.
All in all, pleasantly surreal game. Good job.

"Great game! I love it!"

The only problem I have with this game is that I don't understand how the bomb shot works. How do you hit the bomb with Zeke's hammer when your using Hunk?
