"Good introduction for beginners"

by: Vorpal
date: August 10, 2006

The one problem I heard was in the introduction. I was taught NEVER to introduce yourself as "name"+san or kun or chan or whatever. Those are only to be used for other people. I could be mistaken, since I'm not a native speaker, but that was grilled into me during the first semester of the several years I took Japanese.

Author's Response:

Yes, you're right. That was a big mistake on my part. At first I was just thinking that I needed a way to help people get used to the idea of titles like kun or chan but when I was writing the script, I kinda got ahead of myself and put that in there. Then when I recorded it, I thought, "hey that shouldn't be there...well, nobody will really notice anyway." But now I'm not so sure it was right to just ignore it. I'll bet some people who speak Japanese really well start watching it and think, "What a moron! And he's in charge of teaching all these people who are going to be watching this piece of crap!?" lol I'll just make sure not to make that kind of mistake again. Though, I really kinda do feel like I shouldn't be teaching people because I'm only self taught. I've never taken any Japanese classes or even known any Japanese people. So I hope I can make the next installments without teaching people the wrong stuff! lol Thanx for the review.

"good"

date: August 10, 2006

i've been learning Japanese for quite a while now, and I haven't practiced for a few months, so I kinda forgot a lot. This helped me pick up the basics ^^

One mistake, though: you treat 'desu' as a verb. It may look like a verb, and even share some verbal forms, but in Japanese, desu is not a verb. It's more like a particle to either make a sentence polite or -as has been said- to express 'to be'. It has more uses, but i kinda forgot those, too ^^"

For the rest, great to learn the basics, or practice them. Make lesson 2 ^^

Author's Response:

Thanx for the review and I will try to make lesson 2 as soon as possible. As for the desu not actually being a verb, thanx for telling me that because I'm self taught so some of my info easily can be wrong. I think I will end up learning more Japanese from reviews than the people will who use the lesson. lol

"wow nice..."

Starting in September, thanks to a persistent friend of mine, a group of us are allowed to start doing Japanese at school. This will definately get me familiar with the basics of he, she, they etc. and I found it pretty useful. I did get a book on Japanese and I think if you had done he, she, they etc. and greetings in the first lesson, like in this book, rather than the random bit on animals then that might have worked a little better.

Still a great help nonetheless and I think it will be useful for a lot of people. Great work.

Humours 2 cosve the pooping cow :D

This has been wanted for centuries by people.
An interactive learn Japanese program, finally!

I've been wanting to learn Japanese for a while now and haven't had the chance because of leaving my school club of it last year (We hardly learned any language, it was all about their way of life really.)

I've learned a bit now so bring on the next lot!

I believe there were a couple of simple corrections:
Grammar instead of Grammer
Also when I wanted to concentrate on the final part, I turned the music off but it didn't turn back on, don't know if it's just me...

Anyhoo, good work!

Author's Response:

Yeah, I think I got the word 'grammar' wrong on my spelling tests in school. lol And about the music, I'm still a noob when it comes to flash because I haven't been working with it for long so I didn't know how to turn the music back on once it's been stopped. lol

I want to learn Japanese for some time now, but the free sites suck and i didn't have the money to learn it properly. Just one question: i read on a site that there are different ways of counting depending on what type of item you want to count. is that true?

Author's Response:

Yes, that's true. I'm gonna include that in the second lesson. Most of the numbers stay the same, but shi(4) becomes yon and shichi(7) becomes nana and kyu(9) becomes ku.

"i live in japan,..."

date: August 10, 2006

I live in japan (shibuya if you know where that is...) ive lived here for 7 years. I can read hiragana , katagana and i know about 80 kanji...i like this it was preatty well explained and for someone that doesnt know japanese at all its a good start. You should make some advanced ones. Maybe on calligraphy.

Keep it up!

P.S. Bokuno cincin totemo okii desu. wakarimaska?
私はそれを見た&#1

;けた。 :D

Author's Response:

Then you know a hell of a lot more Japanese than me. lol Nothing I make about Japanese lanuage or culture could possibly teach you anything. Unless I made something that teaches kanji. I could just look those up then make a program about them, even though I don't know them myself. Or I could teach chinese if you're interested. Anatano chinchin wa totemo okii desu keredomo bokuno chinchin wa totemo totemo totemo okii desu yo!! lol

I liked it :D I'm learning japanese at highschool, and I have to say that you should teach others to the alphabet in the next episode ;)

Author's Response:

I most certainly will. I wanted to do it on this one, but I figured that would be getting to far ahead.

+This is SO good.

+I totally approve and support this submission.

+this is the only tutorial in my FAVOURITES. It will be used over and over. I did some Karate and picked up a few scraps, but not enough to build on.
Thank You
-You might get your sensei to pronouce the whole sentences at the end.
-Grasshopper is used here as a name and should, therefore, be capitalised. I will contact the other Dragons & Spirits- I feel certain they will support this

Author's Response:

Thanx! I actually don't have a sensei. The voice of the sensei was just sounds I took from a small program I had. lol When it comes to stuff that I don't have in my current collection, I may look elsewhere for authentic voices but if I can't find any that match what I want to teach, I may have to resort to saying the phrases myself. I don't consider myself bad at pronouncing Japanese, but it's just for safety that I search elsewhere before I make my own sounds. I could end up sounding really foolish to a native and teaching people how to speak -Japanese with an English accent- lol

"Hm.. ok but not great.."

Let's go with + and -

+ You worked hard
+ The interactivity is nice
+ The sound is not agressing either
+ The actual Japanese pronunciation is excellent (You don't sound like a foreigner with a bad accent)

- Your Yamada-sensei looks more Chinese than anything
- It is very basic Japanese as in you don't explore a lot
- You are trying to teach different things at once which don't make sense until you study further

Being that I have been speaking Japanese for over 6 years and that I live in Japan, of course my view is biased a little. I have learned nothing new in this but some people will, although very simple.

While I understand that you teach the Keigo form (polite Japanese with the form "desu"), it is however not very common in reglar conversations and although people will understand you, you however will not understand the reply.

But hey! It works to impress your friends a little! ^^

And I admit that you have worked really hard on the presentation!
