"you haven't done"

Watched it. Smiled at various points. Chuckled very slightly.

Then skimmed through the reviews. Listened to it once without watching. Found it to be exactly as funny as before. Then watched it a 2nd time.

It seemed similar in style to Seinfeld (which I watched the first 4 episodes of and wasn't amazingly impressed with).

-- A lot of it is predictable stuff (though the end took me slightly by surprise).

++ The delivery is good though.

I think the pauses and the drama you inject into the mundane was the only real humour for me.

++++ I'd call the audio mixing an awesome achievement. Really clean, and the way you mixed in the laughter and kept filesize fairly small is awesome. Technically, it seems pretty much perfect.

--------- Music or sounds before we click play? Don't do it. Stuff takes time to load. Folk sometimes load stuff whilst listening to other things. Really, it's something that I hate about so many flashes.

++ I really like the bg - the wall texture in particular.

- It would have been a nice touch if you'd made yourself brighter when within the spotlight.

++ I like the title and 'comedy club' fonts.

- The other, not so much.

--- During the line about standing on a box and the 3 foot dude, you rotate yourself horribly from one angle to the next. It looks unnatural and it doesn't really fit in with your semi-naturalistic mood.

-- The lip synching is a bit wonky. Your mouth shapes are off I think.

- I agree with Skaijo - drawing frames between the various arm positions would be good.

+ I liked the attention to the eyes.

+ Also the fact that he was a lot more active than he could've been, moving around and unexpectedly moving forwards near the end.

+ Clean lines in gfx

- Shading would be nice.

It's a cool movie. A little slow, but brings a bit of diversity to NG and I enjoying it overall.

I hope to see a similar Flash of your best material. A little disappointed that you haven't done that yet.

Author's Response:

Yeah, there's a lot of room for improvement, huh? :)

The next one will be 24 fps, which will smooth the movements and make more room for more accurate lip-sync. I barely knew how to tween when I did this, so the movements will be SOOOOO much better. And the lighting will be interactive too.

This is why I waited to use my funniest material - I didn't want to blow it with lousy animation. :)

Glad you liked the audio. On the next one, I'll be adding the option to mute the loading theme. I just can't get rid of it completely - I like the theme and the file size is next to nothing.

P.S. I hate Seinfeld. That is all. :)

"Not that funny... but not bad at all. :-)"

date: July 26, 2006

Okay, it seemed like more an "observation of life" session than an actual full-throated knee-slappin' gut-bustin' make-ya-snort-yer-Dr-Pepper-through-yer-nose-all-over-the-s
creen laugh riot. (Though your list of recess options at the end WAS an honest LOL for me. ;-D)

But the main thing is, on your first flash-toon try, you actually TRIED. And practiced until you figured, OK, that doesn't look like a junkfest. Much better than the insipid "ZOMG" stick-figure bloodfests that get my Blam-of-the-Day on my vote quota.

My suggestion? Grab a writing how-to-book from Zucker, Abrams or Zucker, keep working on it, and I hope to see your next work soon. ^_^ d

Author's Response:

Yeah, it's not really my best material, but I am definitely a writer already. Go to my website, read some of the scripts I've written, and then get back to me.

"Good for a laugh."

Yeah, ah... contrary to most of the extensive reviews you've gotten, I enjoyed both the flash and your material. Sure, it's not Comedy Central grade mic-fodder (which I'm sure most of your audience is by now spoiled on), but it was very funny. Maybe it's the age-group that's rating you--I dunno. I was able to identify with most of this skit, so maybe my sense of humor is biased.

But I read one review that had a very good idea for you to try, and I'd like to expound on it: the one about making flash toons of your stand-up actually happening instead of a guy walking the stage. In fact you could keep the stand-up part... but imagine instead of watching this awkward pencil puppet weilding the mic on stage, an animation of exactly what's being said playing out as the comedian narrates. With cartoons you have the grand addition of "visual humor" to add to your stand-up arsenal. I've recently watched your "Imaginary Friend" submission, and I know you're more than capable of pulling off some more great toons, be they comedy or tragedy.

Good luck in the future. Keep the good stuff coming. =)
7/10

Author's Response:

Thanks,

I'm actually planning on doing that for my next one. And now that I have some more experience under my belt (and funnier material), it'll be much better.

My review of Micheal's Stand-Up:

It's really promising to see a new genre take place in NG. I find this idea unique and it paid off quite well amoung some slight technical set backs.

Graphically, the movie was good, but only good. The main character was well drawn but not very well animated. For one thing, the movement was a bit on the jerky side. I'd suggest adding more frames in the main character movments as "inbetweens" so it won't seem like his arms are teleporting into different positions. I also suggest that you bump up the frame rate. That withstanding, the character still moves in a fashion that keeps me interested throughout the entire animation. I like the fact that his eyes are essentially his glasses--it's a very well likeble character.

The sound is unbelievable. I'm surprised that this isn't a 1 MB + animation. I guess with the amount of symbols your using, you can afford to optimize the audio to this quality. The use of sound effects was also very, very well done.

The buttons could use some work. They have color now but it's still apparent that your using the NG Preloader. I'd be nice to have buttons and a preloader that appear to be all your own. I feel bad mentioning such things on your first submission.

The humor was nice--not sure if it would have gotten you through an night at the Improv--but charming all the same. I appreciate the fact that you didn't force yourself to work blue or resort to toilet humor in order to gain some cheap laughs.

Overall, this certainly and truely is an exceptional first submission. You've got some small items you may want to work on a bit more, but you're on a promising track.

Author's Response:

Thanks,

Obviously you were a big help, teaching me the ropes and all those fancy techniques. :)

About the audio - what a lot of people didn't realize is that I mixed all that myself. Every little bit of laughter had to be timed exactly to my voice track. Lots of fun...

I'll definitely be keeping your opinions and advice in mind when I get to the next one. Thanks again.

"I don't think I'd recommend doing this again"

date: June 19, 2006

The material was funny, but I listened to it with and then without watching the animation, and to be honest, it was much funnier without the animation. Not sure what it is, but flash doesn't seem to be very conducive to the humor of stand-up routines. Maybe if you surrounded yourself with battling stick figures or something. Or if you're determined to do this in Flash, perhaps show an animation of the events you're describing instead of just you moving around on an otherwise empty stage. Just some suggestions, take 'em for what they're worth - the material was funny either way. Good luck! :-)

"pretty good."

date: June 19, 2006

this is getting close to good meterial, and the jokes were pretty good. a little slow at first, and there isn't really any need to do any animation. this could work as an audio file.

"Good start."

date: June 19, 2006

Since this is your first start, I would like to congratulate you on a job well done. The part I din't like though was that there were only three parts for his mouth.....wait, four. And I felt like it was too simplified. But other than that, this was a good flash. The jokes were good. But the drawing of your teacher's death was my favourite....Since I used to do that....<<....>>....
