"Thank you for this Tutorial"

by: Oddler
date: April 20, 2008

It was very informative and is helping me learn the basics of Action Script. I was so intimidated to do this Action Script stuff and finally bit the bullet.The way you present it makes it digestible and the music was good too :3

I recommended this tut for the tutorial collections! Thanks again!

"Awesome!"

I've read other tutorials, but this is the first one that mentions the While Loops. I was wondering what the best way was to keep the game running continuously :)

Many other concepts are explained in a very simple way. It's much easier to understand than trying to read the Actionscript documentation. Especially when all you need to know are basic game concepts.

very good but i found a glitch in your code. in your platformer advanced movment area the code you put up has three errors. 1. you closed the enter frame to soon and gives a glitch saying that the statement
if (this._y == stage.height) {
vy = 0;
gravity = 0;
needs to be in onClipEvent handler.
2. all of your
if (key.isDown(Key.RIGHT)) {
the first key isnt capitalized and the program doesnt understand that key and Key are the same thing.
3. your hitTest you said to make a line and name it ground yet you programmed it
if (_root.guy.hitTest(_root.floor)){
when if you name the line ground it should be
if (_root.guy.hitTest(_root.ground)){
otherwise awesome job learned alot from this tutorial

"definitely a great actionscript tutorial."

i didn't find any of it helpful, because i already know it, but i can tell that it would be helpful if i was less experienced in flash. i love how you didn't stray to "COPY AND PASTE THIS IT WORKS CUZ IM AWESOME LOL" and you sticked to teaching code.

i noticed a mistake in the advanced section, though. i dunno if anyone pointed this out, but arrays are zero-indexed, so Array[0] would point to the first element, not Array[1]. great job on the rest of it, though. i liked the inclusion of debugging and classes. i don't think many people include that in their actionscript tutorials, so it's good that you did.

i skimmed the beginner bit to see if you would actually teach the concept of coding, rather than arbitrary easy scripts, and lo and behold...you did. more people need to see this tutorial before they go on the flash forum, whining about why their code doesn't work, or "CAN U GUYS CODE MY GAME 4 ME LOLZ"

also, at the end of the advanced tutorial, i couldn't click the "menu" button...unless that was just intended to bring up the navigation thing. i think a menu button would have been a bit better than three buttons with numbers on it, but that's a very petty gripe and i'm not holding it against you.

all in all, excellent tutorial.

(also, i looked back in some of the reviews...i must say, i enjoyed your response to IaReFrEaKeeee. some people just don't seem to get that this isn't a silly comment box \: )

Author's Response:

Heh, I never encountered the 'menu' issue, but as for the Array thing... I'm not exactly how that bug slipped through :) I think it was from my Visual Basic days... Ah, that language taught me so many bad habits ;)

Thank yee for the review.

Thank you for making and releasing this tutorial! But I didn't really get the hang of mapping in tiles using arrays. I did get the concept, but I didn't understand how to make one.

Otherwise, this is the best tutorial ever!

This is an excellent tutorial man, very detailed and organized. The interface was easy to use an your instructions were relatively easy to follow. Thanks! This should help many people who are trying to learn this programming language.
