"Wow."

date: March 14, 2006

That was a really great flash, and my review couldn't possibly do it credit. Everything about that was superb, very well done. My only question is, in your notes, you say that he made one mistake and paid severely for it (or whatever). Was his mistake hitting on the mobster's wife or steal the briefcase of money?

"A New Classic With A Few Nods To The Past"

date: March 14, 2006

This time, I won't spoil anything in my review so even those who haven't seen the film can read this one.
First I will speak in an attempt to convert virgin viewers of this flash and then I have some words to the author who created this masterpiece.
To The Virgins: This is incredible and much worth the time spent waiting on it to load. This is actually in color unlike his past two efforts (Composer & Edge of Darkness). Those were both amazing and B & W fit well with the stories but his choice for color was excellent and you, the viewer, will truly appreciate every moment of it. There's action, romance, good music, and a typical but fun to follow stroyline of a sax player getting gripped by trouble and trying his best to slip out of it. But I do suggest seeing the Edge of Darkness and The Composer first so that you can spot the little nostalgic moments in the music and certain scenes made just for the fans of this particular author. He threw in a lot of stuff old fans like me will remember and will laugh and look back on. Great Stuff!
WARNING: This NExt SeCTIon ConTAins SligHT SpoilerS!!!!!
To The Author: I love the little moments that seem to be thrown in for viewers of your past flash films. I don't know whether you did it on purpose or not but you have quite a few nods to the past such as the scene at the end at the dinner where the Billie and our jazz boy talk is a nod to Composer. The girlfriend dying is a plot nod to Composer. The fact Chillz is a musician is a character nod to Composer. There's one song that plays when Chillz is about to come up to some doors or corridors in a dark place that sounds like a deep grungy feeling and this song is straight out of the Composer. Even the Billie character is a direct nod to The Composer because of her full name being Billie Holidie which except for one letter or two is the same name as the singer on the poster that sits on a wall in both The Composer and Edge of Darkness. You also have a nod to Taxi Driver with the main song from the movie playing while Chillz rides in the backseat of the Taxi with a taxi driver that looks like Travis Pickle driving Chillz around. That made me bust out laughing. I was just tripping the whole time. You really interact with your audience in a real way and not through audible words or choose your own adventure crap. You get us, the fans, through emotional response. I love your work.

"Very good"

date: March 14, 2006

Whilst the general type of story is a well-trodden path (i.e. protagonist undergoes a struggle but eventually prevails), this story is the best example that I have seen. Everything about it was great - from the clever and tasteful avoidance of verbal dialogue to the genuinely unexpected 'deus ex machina' ending. This story managed to evoke strong emotions in me - which is an excellent thing and gives it real depth and meaning, features which I consider essential for most works to be classified as true 'art'. I highly praise your work.

This flash has content, and a lot of it! This story was touching me to the heart, and the graphics and style is soothing for the eye. It's nice to hear some jazz as well. Thumbs up, mate!

"Now thats animation"

by: nina1
date: March 13, 2006

Now see this is the type of animation people come to newground to see, because not only is a graphically good looking but it also provides a very well told story that didn't have to include any voice actors or text to get the story across. Which by my standard makes you a very good animator.

By the way you're definitely going under my favorites list, so keep up the good work and hope to see more of your great work:>

"Wow! Another classic just like The Composer!"

date: March 13, 2006

With this, your most recent submission, you have set a new standard for yourself as an author. Now after this and the Composer, you are very respected as an artist. Many things are now expected of you, all of which are good. Your stories now must always be well developped, the length of your movies must always be as long as these were, and your movies now must be presented in this way "film noir". But this is definitely a good thing because every who has watched these two movies knows what youre clearly capable of. All of the aspects in this movie were just great, or sometimes better. Here is my review.

The graphics were filled with style and great moments in this movie. At first glance they are very impressive and almost perfect or as close as you can get to it. But when you break it down there are in fact some negatives, even if there is only a few here and there. The only negatives i could find when i paid close attention is sometimes the animation wasnt quite as fluent or clear as id like and what i mean by that is sometimes it looked as though some motions were skipped. An example of this is where the big saw Chillz with the money and he ran out of the hallway. And only occasionally the detail wasnt quite what id hoped it would be like the whole way through. Other than these there were only little flaws here and there. I loved the character design a lot, i admire an artist who can give away a part of their characters' personalities just by the way they look. The whole movie had a cool feel to it thanks to your animating style, which consisted of a dim purple glow it seemed in many of the scenes. The style was without a doubt the strongest and most prominent aspect in this movie. Your animating style was just a small fraction of the components that made up the perfect 10 i gave you for this aspect.
The feel you were able to create remained strong the whole way through. It definitely had that Film noir style i mentioned earlier as well as a very "jazzy" look and feel to it as well. This has not been done in any other movie i have ever seen on Newgrounds. This was not the only thing that made this movie extremely creative and original. The story was amazing, it was very similar to a real movie id say in the sense that it was very well developped, complex and had a good point to it. In other words it could pass for something made by a professional. The sound was also a very strong aspect in this movie. It was also very important to give the movie the feel it had. Its just a few sound effects were i guess a little awkward, again when Chillz had the money and bolted out of the hallway is an example. But the music was amazing. Very jazzy, very diverse and very cool!

Overall this was an amazing movie for a number of reasons. Despite its few flaws it came out very well and i as an author would be completely satisfied if i created this. As of now the score is definitely there to show with this truly deserves. I wouldnt be surprised to see this linger around the top 50 submissions for a very long time. Really nice job!

"A hip cartoon disguised as a film noir."

date: March 12, 2006

This was a pretty fun movie. The style was the best thing going for it. It was vivid and surreal and the characters were quirky and fun to look at. The animation was pretty decent. Sometimes the animation was a little stiff but it kind of gave it a fun cardboard cut-out flair to it so it worked. The way you told the story by replacing dialogue with music and animation worked out very well and I'm really impressed by this piece.

"Hell yeah"

date: March 12, 2006

Absolutely brilliant story. It really gave me that old jazzy feeling. I almost felt sad for Chillz when Mongo & Jerry kicked his ass in the alley :P Keep it up!!!
