"Hmmm..."

date: January 9, 2005

Wow! This wasn't quite something I was expecting! This is probably the best serious flash I have seen. I loved the graphics and the music(was that Enya?). Overall it was a great movie!

Author's Response:

Thats great, and yes that was Enya. It was from the Gladiator Soundtrack, Enya - Now We Are Free. It was a fitting song for this I think.

All that work paid off. Also nice to see a theme so original. Top marks, mate. Also well done to your friend who sat with you on the PC for all those hours.

Author's Response:

Yeah! Thanks mate, I am glad you think so. My friend Martin is a great guy, it was fun having him help me out and provide insight. We are going to make future animations, we jsut need time. He has been with me responding to a few reviews here, it was all fun. =)

"A job well done"

It sounds like you worked on this project very hard and after watching it, you really did. This was a fine piece o' work and I can tell that you'll be great if you keep at it (trust me, I've watched your other flashes and loved them). I can't think of anything that really needs improvement, so I'll just wait to see more of your work. lol Maybe it won't be a school project next time =P

Author's Response:

Thanks for the encouragment, I will keep at it and maybe someday I can be great, but thats many years to come becuase flash is a streneous process and requires alot of time and patience. I am glad you enjoyed it, take care!

"Not a bad go. Could be better, but worth the time"

First off, as a reply to Zentihx, you poor unromantic bastard, the aboriginal peoples of north america (to be politically correct) did not rely on drugs for their vision quests. At all. Unless said aboriginal eats some bad mushrooms. The vision quests worked because the people believed in them so MUCH. When the person, forced to rely on their own skills, gave in to hunger and fatigue, their mind would wander. And since they believed so strongly, they had a vison. Which was true to them. AAAaaanyways, not a bad movie nero. Try to do some more actual animation next time, though. A drawn picture which only moves slightly up and down as a backround slides by isn't as impactful as seeing the character actually move his legs. But I'm behind 100%. Hope to see your next one, man.

Author's Response:

Haha, yea the last guy was nuts, .. but the vision quest was maeant to be spiritual and for self reflection.. not about the visions. The vision quest is a metaphor, it is to see your own path in life. I will try to improve my animation, =) Thanks for watching.

"Was not that good."

date: January 9, 2005

First off, nice attempt at a story involving the vision quest of the Native American tribes. But let me fill you in on what a vision quest really is. You know what psychadellics are right? A vision quest is totaly the elder indians giving the one who is to go on said quest the psychadellics. The person stumbles around, seeing all sorts of weird colors and bubbly stuff and so on, then comes back saying he had a vision.

Also, indians did not dress that way, nor did they wear a bandana. Bah, what an insult.

Author's Response:

I don't know what you are talking about, and thanks for your "indians" reference which is a stupid stereotype people picked up after Christopher Columbas's mistake. I do not know what natives you are speaking of but you must be on the psychadellics, not the natives. Also, indians did have bandanas, (Juranamo.. ever seen that movie?)

I am guessing you jsut got an idea and thought it would be good to type it, thanks for YOUR insult.

"Nice job."

I know a little about vision quests in shamanism and some Native American cultures, so I have a bit of background on what's going on. ;)
I really like how you made your artistic style unique. You also did a good job on making this uniqueness uniform throughout the entire flash. However, the characters were not portrayed in a dynamic fashion, which took a lot of life out of the flash. I'm not saying your flash is dead and unfeeling, and it's definately not. You're learning, and you show a lot of potential. :)
Your beginning was okay. Its strength came when the boy and his father were sitting around the campfire in the longhouse, but it really hit home as soon as we found out he was going to his vision quest. The middle was strong and very well organized... we first see the boy trying his best to survive, making fumble after fumble. Then, the turning point in the plot comes: he receives an inspiration and an important message from the great spirit (in the guise of an eagle), that changes his entire life. He succeeds at hunting, builds a warm fire, and carries himself with the certainty and dignity of an adult. Excellent job with your storytelling! I feel the ending was the most powerful; not only do we see how he is welcomed at home, but we get a short epilogue with his son's vision quest. Very inspiring. :) :) :) Style = 8
I really didn't know Enya did this song, but it worked fantastically with the plot and style. Your timing was good, and it really brought out the cultural flavor of the video.
Not being intensely bloody with heads popping off, the violence score is low, and the few acts of violence that did exist were tastefully done. Violence = 4
Since you had a preloader to start the video, you get a 1 for Interactivity.
I was a bit amused upon watching the boy eat poisonous berries (nightshade?). But overall, his inner strength to overcome the harsh wilderness is very emotionally moving, especially at the end, with the initiation of his future son. :)
This is one of the better flashes I've seen. You get a 4/5 :)

Author's Response:

Heylo,

From my frist impression, I am assuming you are a creative writer because you wrote an extensive review that was well crafted and made me as the artist appreciate what I have done. Thanks for your warm words of encouragment and compliments.

It is true I am learning so this is a stepping stone becuase in this movie I experemented with a new art style and got to try new things with animation and flash.

Yeah, the ending was one of the key elements that came to me frist. To show it is (the vision quest) a tradition. The main element was to show the native spirituality and to show that the vision quest is an experience of maturity and growth.

Ooo.. yeah Enya did this song, I learned about it when I saw Gladiator, one of my favourite movies.. I thought it would fit well.

I am glad you enjoyed my little movie, thanks for your great review, take care and God bless.

"Good!"

Nice presentation on the subject. Very touching to see. Technically, you're animation could use some work... but on the other hand, it's more effort than is normally put in for a school project, so I give you props for that. The music is a bit cheesy, but it really fits the subject. Good job and keep up the good work.

Author's Response:

Heh, yeah I am still learning animation, I really like Bitey of Brakenwood, but the animator, Adam Philips is a professional animator.. and hes 30, I am only 16.. I hope one day I can be half as good as he is, and actually impress some people..
