I really liked the animation in that, it was a nice piece of work. Made me think though was that purple thing suppose to be part of the little girl??

I think what is happening is the heartless monster that is terrorizing the city hurt the little boy and is now destroying everything and everyone he loves. His heart and feelings manifest as a hero, as he bleeds out, that then enters the monster and destroys it by giving it what it hates the most and is probably missing, a heart. Am I right? I hope so :D

Also I really enjoyed this, it takes a bit of deeper thinking and appreciation but that only adds to the movie for me.
