In the summer of 2000, Jose Ortiz submitted an amazing short about the character Robocop. The art, animation and audio were all superb (Jose is a professional animator), and it quickly became a newgrounds favorite. It was a credit to the Robocop name, which has been tarnished after a run of sequels attempting to cash in on Paul Verhoeven's masterpiece. If anything, this Flash animation was a great tribute to the film and served as promotion to a character that has been forgotten by many.

Unfortunately, the goons at MGM don't wish to honor the character the way Mr. Ortiz has. Here's the letter they sent me:

Subject: ROBOCOP Animated Short

Dear Mr. Fulp:

I am writing on behalf of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. ("MGM") and Orion Pictures Corporation ("Orion"), the owners of all rights, worldwide, in the ROBOCOP character, including, but not limited to, the right to create derivative works based on this character or on any of the Robocop motion pictures.

It has come to our attention that resident on the "Newgrounds" website is an animated short created by Jose Ortiz which features the Robocop character. Please be advised that this work was created without our authorization and violates our intellectual property rights. Consequently we must demand that this short be immediately taken off your site. Failure to do so will cause us to pursue all available legal remedies against your organization.

Please also provide us with any information you have regarding Mr. Ortiz, including contact information, so that we might contact him directly concerning this matter.

The foregoing is not intended to be a full recitation of MGM's or Orion's rights. Nothing contained herein shall be deemed to constitute a waiver of any of MGM's or Orion's right, claims or remedies, at law or in equity in connection with this matter, all of which are expressly reserved.

Note that Orion Pictures Corporation went bankrupt in the 90's, so I doubt they had much say in what is now owned by the blackhearts at MGM.

I wish MGM could just open their eyes and get it - people make stuff like this because they are FANS. Jose wasn't selling tickets or merchandise related to the character, he was just making a fun short film because he's such a big fan. People have gotten so uptight about this sort of thing. I doubt there is ever going to be another Robocop movie, so why can't the fans continue to enjoy the character?

Up yours, MGM. I'm never seeing any of your shitty movies again.

Subject: The Removal of Robocop

I would just like to invite you to take a stroll over to them MGM website and notice that there is not even a listing of Robocop in there archive ! They were stuck up and selfish enough to rob us of one of Newgrounds most beloved and prized animations , yet they werent proud enough of there own work to put it in there archive of movies ! When the soon to be blockbuster movie X-Men arrives in the theatres and the endless flow of X-Men shorts hits Newgrounds , will we be robbed of our right to view and createour own ? I strongly protest what MGM has done and plead with you to not let there bullying tactics push you around . Your site reminds people that they do not have to put up with the bullshit of people who think they are "higher" or "more powerful" . Allow Jose's masterpiece a place on Newgrounds . In fact .... If it is possible . Give it its own page posting any letters you have recieved about its greatness . Show Jose that "corporate america" cant rob us of our own creative geniuses (which Jose's short was), and our right to celebrate it !

p.s. I sure as hell hope that MGM doesnt have any part in X-Men , cause i plan to create my own X-Men movies as soon as i save the cash to buy the software to create them ! LOL ...... Who knows how long that might be though ! LOL

p.s. I would also like to give you praise along with the rest of your team on the outstanding job you have done in creating and recreating NEWGROUNDS .
