PSP Help

PSP Specific Help

The PSP can be a fickle piece of hardware at times, especially when it comes to transferring data or downloading content. Don't worry though, we've got you covered! For all of our downloads you'll need, of course, a Sony PSP, and a USB 2 cable. It might also be a good idea to update your PSP Firmware, which is easily done via your PSP "Settings" menu. refer to the subsections below for assitance with the media types you're having trouble snagging.

Most of the media that's available in the PC version of the PSP site is straightforward enough to download — for images you just have to right click on any thumbnail link and "Save Target As". Save the images to a location you can remember. The videos come zipped up and the .zip file contains two files: the .mp4 (movie file itself) and a .thm file (the thumbnail image your PSP displays to launch said movie.

Using PSP Wallpapers

Plug your PSP into your computer with a USB 2 cable, using the jack located at the top of your PSP and any available USB port on your computer. On your PSP menu, go to the very left menu, "Settings", and select "USB Connection." Your computer will now have a removable disk showing up. (If not, which is rare, try another USB port; for example, if you were using a port on the keyboard try locating one in the back of your computer to use instead.)

Now, open up this removable disk and navigate to /PSP/PHOTOS. If these directories do not exist on your PSP you will need to create them. (Better yet, upgrade your firmware.) You could now either copy whatever wallpapers you have downloaded to this directory/folder, or to keep things neatly organized you can create a folder called "Wallpapers" (or something similar) on your PC. Drop the wallpapers you've downloaded into this folder, then drop the entire "Wallpapers" folder into your /PSP/PHOTOS directory, which the PPSP will automatically recognize as a subdirectory of your "Photos" in the PSP browser chain.

To then set the images you have downloaded as your PSP wallpaper, close the USB Connection from your PSP and then go to the Photos section. From there, select the image that you want to set as your wallpaper. While on the image, click the triangle button to bring up a list of options. Then navigate to the "Set as Wallpaper" option.

Downloading PSP Movies

Plug your PSP into your computer with a USB 2 cable, using the jack located at the top of your PSP and any available USB port on your computer. On your PSP menu, go to the very left menu, "Settings", and select "USB Connection." Your computer will now have a removable disk showing up. (If not, which is rare, try another USB port; for example, if you were using a port on the keyboard try locating one in the back of your computer to use instead.)

Now, open up this removable disk and navigate to /MP_ROOT/100MNV01/. If these directories do not exist on your PSP, you will need to create them. Better yet, upgrade your firmware. Now, extract the .zip file that you downloaded. Copy both the .mp4 file and the .thm file included in the .zip bundle to the directory above. If you're wondering what the .thm file is, it's just a thumbnail image that identifies the .mp4 file when you're looking through your collection of videos. Without these files, there is a blank-styled icon that identifies the movie, which is not very useful if you can't remember what the animation is about without actually watching it.

Movie names on the PSP have to follow a strict naming convention — M4VXXXXX.mp4 (where XXXXX is a five digit number). The .thm file has to be the same name as the movie, with the exception of the extension being different. You may run into a situation where you have two movies named the same, so you will have to rename both the .mp4 and .thm files to another random number in the XXXXX part of the filename if you want to keep the files that already exist on your PSP as well as import the new files that you have downloaded.

Still having serious issues?

It's called Google. We didn't build the PSP, nor does Sony pay us for customer tech support. It's not our problem that you can't get shit to work, when our PSPs work just fine and do what we want them to, when we want them to. Maybe the problem lies somewhere between your inability to finish grade school and your staggering level of general ignorance when it comes to anything more complicated than building a sandwich. If you send us PMs asking how to use a wallpaper, so help us God… Additionally, you can check out the help forums and we'll all try to help you out to the best of our abilities.
