Week 3: Pitch your animatic
This week is kind of an unusual weekly and it may need to be split into multiple little pieces in order to get it to work how i envision but here goes..
In this Flash-off your task is to pitch your 1min movie in the form of an animatic. I was looking at Michael Davis' Animatics for the movie Shoot Em Up, and I thought that i would be fun to do something similar as a challenge.
So in an attempt to make it easier, I ripped the audio from Michael Davis' pitch and zipped it up for you to use. The goal is using that audio piece to create a rough animatic of your idea of what you would envision doing with that pitch.
What is an animatic? Well for starters look at the link above, its basically a really roughly animated 'storyboard' of sorts where you just show your train of thought quickly and in a loose manner. Its a fairly quick 45 second or so snippet of audio to work with, so you SHOULD be able to generate a quick animatic out of it.
The cool thing about this flash-off is that its pretty hard to get it wrong. You just want to show your ideas here... it can be really rough, definately uncolored .. etc. You want people to be excited about what you came up with as opposed to being blown away by the craftmanship. Again look at the link above for guidance.
This week we'll concentrate on the animatic. Next week, maybe we can have a quick and dirty poll on which animatic was the most fun to take into production, and so the next flash-off will be taking someone elses animatic (maybe itll be your own if you end up winning) and making something a bit more polished out of it. That may take more than a weeks worth of flashing to accomplish, we'll see when the time comes. And at the end we can put them all together as one entry and end the year with a nice collaborative study on working under someone elses direction and being able to pitch your ideas to a team of animators/clients waiting to work on it.

* Remember, all we want is an animatic this week, no polished work. I recommend you close your eyes and just listen to the audio a bit and start to generate a quick 30 second storyline out of it. Its a pretty open sound snippet. Theres no reason why you should be coming up with something that is a copy of the youtube clip provided.
