Hey everyone...

So I have a chainsaw that I want to animate and I need to know if there's an easier way to do it. My plan is to make the teeth of the chainsaw move in a frame-by-frame sequence but if there's a better way to do it then I'm going to skip the long hassle of having to FBF the thing. Any advice?

you only have to animate each blade on the chain moving up one more blade. So like three or four frames of movement and loop it. Makes it look like the chain is rotating. Then add some smoke and shaking and your all set!

ok?

You could animate ONE tooth of the chain.

Make it a graphic first of all. Turn onion skin on, make a new frame. Put the tooth (the one on the new frame) right next to the transparent one (the one of the old one), and animate in between. You'll basically get a tooth moving to the left and that's it.

Now, if you put a bunch of these graphics together, you'll get the illusion of the chain moving.

Here's an example of what I mean:

Well the teeth on a chainsaw are just little things moving back and forth, so your best bet is to just create a movieclip on the chainsaw of the teeth moving back and forth.

Crappy example of what I mean:

just pretend it looks like a chainsaw.
