Most people go for the instant hits, the pop songs with the catchy, repetetive tune and the simple lyrics. And all the pop songs that go for the slow tempo "deep and meaningful" style just fail horribly "oh no my life's so hard/oh no the world sucks because that's what people like to hear". I have no problem with decent popular songs, but when it's all people listen to, then that's when it starts to get on my nerves.
My brother thinks he's above pop music, but he only listens to "the classics", rock and metal that were made before he was born. Now, there's nothing wrong with that music, but there's no variation in style. And he goes around bragging about his awesome music tastes.
A little while ago I bought a few electronica CDs and played them in his car. It didn't take him long to tell me he thought the music was terrible. I find that a lot of good music can't be picked out from one or two listens, it needs to sink in.
Yes, I like some mainstream music, yes, I also like some music that others hate. But I actually listen to the music, I actually give it a chance.
I've been thinking about adding some dissonant/avant-garde music to my collection just to prove to myself that even the most hostile sounding music has its merits.
If I have to listen to a song several times over before I like it, well, that just makes me like it even more.
