My Fight Against Westboro Baptist

Hey everyone.

While browsing various Marilyn Manson songs on YouTube, I came across a group called "Westboro Baptist Church" protesting a Marilyn Manson concert.

Eh... nothing new, religious fanatics raving about Marilyn Manson. Nevertheless, I decided to check them out. What I found was extremely startling and somewhat disturbing.

These people carry signs around and protest all over the country against various things, including Gay Rights parades and even dead soldier's funerals.

They carry signs that say "God hates fags" "God hates america", among several others. At soldier's funerals, they carry signs that are pro 9-11 and are happy to see dead soldiers. Some of their signs proclaim such things as "10 soldiers died... we pray for 10,000 more".

In short, they're basically anti-world. Literally. They hate America, Canada, and China. (At least, those are the ones I have found as of now)

They hate the Catholic religion, they hate all gay people, and. they hate politicians. Hell, they probably hate the average US citizen. And what's worse is that they're getting their kids to hold those signs up as well- it's being passed down. And it has to stop.

I'm surprised they haven't been all shot- I'd do it myself if I could find them and I wouldn't get arrested.

But anyway, I found out that these fuckers are coming to Pittsburgh, my town. I was browsing their protest dates on their website. specifically looking to see if they were coming anywhere near me. Well, they are on the twenty-fifth.

As a matter of fact, they're going to several locations at once. There is only one that I know of- St. Paul's Cathedral- one of our politician's passed away, and they've come to protest her funeral. I don't know what kind of shit they'll be saying, but I'm going to try my best to stop it.

My first obstacle will be getting out of school. I'll have to check, as we may be on Thanksgiving break. That'd be ideal.

My next obstacle will be getting down there- it's a good distance away- I'll need a means of transportation.

And finally, I'll need something to repel them. I was thinking something along the lines of icy-cold water balloons or paintball guns. Anything to repel them before the funeral starts. I'll need a couple of my friends as well.

What do you guys think of this group, and how do you think I should handle the situation? If I can get down there, I'm not giving them a moment of peace.

I think you should stay in school. Ideally, you will have Government that day and they might be covering the Constitution. Perhaps the first couple amendments. You might have to do a worksheet on the 1st Amendment, maybe.

I heard of these guys, some soldier died, and during the funeral they stood outside holding up signs like you described.

Get a bunch of people to wear a Guy Fawkes mask (from V FOR VENDETTA), go to where they are, and protest their protest by Rickrolling them, Chocolate Rain, etc. While you're doing this, have someone record it on a video-camera, then upload to youtube. Be sure to tell us you did it!

Some people may call you a newfag for it, but don't worry. You'll show the world how much the Westboro Baptist Church fails, by trolling them with newfags (or newfag look-alikes).

I honestly don't get what they are trying to prove at the funerals. The person they don't like is already dead, so why don't they just fuck off and go celebrate in their joke of a church?

I'm debating whether or not I should call the church and notify them that those fuckers'll be there. Protesting at that sort of thing would be extremely disrespectful, and maybe it can be stopped formally.

1) An anti-gay religious group is holding a protest against a politician near the district represented by Rick Santorum.

In all honesty, the desire to silence a person or group is more dangerous than people that only spew out rhetoric. Really all they are capable of doing is getting attention so that they may just have one more person hear them and agree. What does that lead to? One more person spews stupid rhetoric. Guess what? Nobody is going to die because someone thinks a dead soldier is revenge for an aborted fetus. It's all shock value. Shouting "God hates fags" at a dead Marine's funeral serves the same purpose as why people listen to Howard Stern; shock value.

Silencing them takes freedom away from everyone. If you can prohibit a viewpoint just because enough people don't think it's popular, what's to stop someone from silencing you as long as enough people side against you? What if truly, the majority of Americans sided with the church and now it's unpopular for you to differ in opinion? Limiting a person's freedom of speech only justifies taking anyone's freedom for no real reason other than contrasting viewpoints. It's a necessary evil.

I have heard about these guys, and it really is disturbing how they can do the things they do. I suggest (not well liked) just keep them from where they going. Block them far enough the people aren't being harassed by them. If you want to get rid of them passively keep them from doing their goal at the funeral without sinking to their level.

Yeah, that was my plan. I don't intend to harm any of them, just repel them. Keeping them away entirely, however, would be quite hard. They ride in some sort of large bus- one would have to intercept the bus to stop them.

I have the means, but I would get caught within a matter of seconds, as I'd need some sort of pellet rifle or something. Those can't be concealed, and they certainly don't have an orange tip.

Another option would be to literally block the protesters from the sight of the funeral. I know of a group of about 20 that stand right in front of them with American flags so that the funeral can carry on peacefully.... perhaps I could contact that group and they could block 'em.

Alternatively, we could block them ourselves. That would be legal, as far as I can tell.

The outlook, however, is looking grim for me. I'll be stuck in school on the 25th while this is going on. Unless I can find a way to get out, I may not be able to be down there, at least during the funeral.

And to the other people- I by no means have anything against freedom of expression and speech and such- I never have a problem with any protesters. But when there are scumbags who say that kind of shit at a peaceful funeral, that's where I draw the line.
