3.80 / 5.00 4,200 ViewsIs it true that the PS3 is not backwards compatible? I've been reading online that the old 60gb ones aren't, and that the new ones are. What about the old 80gb PS3s that were sent out before they cut the price (which I happen to have.)? Does this mean that I won't be able to play anyone of the epic PS2, ps1 games that I've loved as a kid?
I just need some feedback on this because right now, I'm pretty pissed off.

What..?
And I had meant that the old 60 gb PS3s ARE backwards compatible, but the new ones, 60gb and 80, aren't.

My 80 gig is backwards compatible and i got it 2 years ago.
If you have ps1 and ps2 games I'd assume you had the consoles before that so its not that big of a loss.
Your supposed to be buying a ps3 for the new games. If all you wanted to get was old games then just a buy a ps2.
I am buying a ps3 for the new games. Why do you think I bought it..?
But that still doesn't take away from the fact that I would like to be able to play the old PS2 classics along with the new age hits. One of the reasons I bought a PS3 was knowing I would be able to play PS3, PS2, and PS1 games on it.

Isn't there an add-on or something so you could make that happen?
some models of ps3 just dont do it. thats why i kept my ps2. no loss here. anyways, youd have to start all over on your ps2/1 games since the ps3 doesnt have a place for the memory cards...
stop being lazy and just switch the video cords to your ps2, assuming you have one. lol
Well that's another thing.
Some of the games get to a certain part on my ps2 and don't work. So I use them on the ps3.
For example, I have this one game, Rogue Galaxy, that wouldn't even load on my ps2, let alone be played on it. But when I put it in my ps3, it worked great, no glitches, no freezing, no nothing.
It's not like I'm saving ALL my ps2/1 games onto my ps3. Of course not. Only the games that don't work on my ps2 I'm using for my ps3, which aren't many. Probably like 2 or 3 games. And most of the games I'm saving to the ps3 are ps1 games, to be honest.

Like, when you mean add-ons, do you mean updates?
Because whenever I turn on my ps3 and there is a new update, it in forms me about it as soon as I'm on the main screen. If there are updates that I have to actually go look around and search for then no, but that shouldn't be the case.

When it first came out, the 80 gig was backwards compatable, but the 40 wasn't. A rather costly download was needed from PSN to play PS2 games, but it could still play PS1 just fine (as they're CD format).
I don't know what kind we have, but we can play PS2 games (I don't think PS1), but we had to buy some thing that goes where the controller charger does, which allows us to save data on PS2 games, we can't without it. No matter what, I will always have the PS2 hooked up, even during next generation as I doubt the next Playstation would allow PS2 games either.
I usually frequent the VG and collaboration Forums. If you find me anywhere else, I'm lost and can't find my way back.

u mean the adapter that allows ps2 memory cards on the ps3?
There should be a section where you can emulate ps2 and ps1 memory cards right in the menu of the ps3.
Maybe it all had to do with whose actually downloading the system updates.
Some models aren't backwards compatible.
I know the 60gb is backwards compat.
i think all game companies should just give up on HD discs and just go back to cartridges, i mean, seriously, who here actualy ever had problems with them?
me...

Tell me, I must know. When were you gonna say this? This is something that was discussed a year and a half ago. I'm sorry man, but you're incredibly late.

If you're using a sniper rifle, it's called sniping. When you're NOT using a sniper rifle, it's called camping.
I got the new 80GB. No PS2 compatability, nut it will play some ps1 games. I have a working PS2, so no problems there. To play PS2, or PS1 games, you need to download "save data utility" from PSN. It's basically an internal memory card for older games. You cannot cross over save data. That's all I know, they may change it soon with a new patch or something.
My PSN ID is xscoot. Crazy, huh?
My 80 GB model is backwards compatible.

I think the old 80 gb is backwards compatible. Mine is about 2 years old and it can play all my ps2 games. Not sure about ps1 though, I don't have any.

I have the MGS4 version, though. I was playing MGS3 earlier today. :P

Sorry, but not everyone can buy a new videogame system the year it comes out. Some people have to wait a year or two..
Sorry, but I bought my PS3 about 9 months ago, so this is all new to me.

Nope, I play PS1 and PS2 games on my 60 all the time.
All currently in production PS3s are not PS2 compatible. Unless you're buying it preowned, you will not be able to play PS2 games. However, all models are PS1 compatible, so you'll be able to play them no matter which you get.
i may be wrong but i saw an add on on the palystation store so you can play ps2 games on newer ps3s im sure i saw that so download that shit

Why do you need it to be backwards compatible? Unless you wanna be an old schooler again!

And not only that, but you can buy some classic PS1 games that you might have lost, or didn't buy before.
I don't know why you're so angry; it's only a minor problem that most people fix by keeping their PS2's around.
the PS3 is an epic fail. xbox360 ps3 emus ftw

new ps3s are not.
old 80gigs are.
No, who told you that? My friend got a PS3 with some old savings bonds last Friday, and the first game he played was Jak 2. I know for a fact mine plays the old PS1 games though, I've played Metal Gear Solid and FF Tactics on it.
