So today I decided I was going to clean up my computer for adware and viruses. However, I had a trial version of Norton Antivirus 2006, which is SUPER old and the virus definitions were outdated. So I decided to uninstall it for AVG Antivirus. However, part way through the uninstall, it got a fatal error and stopped uninstalling. It pointed me to a help link on Norton's website, only to tell me that I needed to download and install Norton 2007. I tried many times to uninstall Norton 2006 afterwards, but nothing was working, so I did what the website told me to do.
So I download 2007 and ran the installer, telling me to restart before I can install 2007. So I restart and install 2007, then run the uninstaller, which after finishing tells me to restart again.
TL;DR version: To uninstall Norton 2006, I had to download Norton 2007, install it, then uninstall it.

Yeah - for being so highly recommended, that software really screws with your computer.
My parents wanted security on their home desktop, and went to the electronics store to ask for advice. The guys there said that Norton was the best, so my parents bought it, paid the fee for a year's membership, installed the software, and now the computer runs like its a Lite-Brite. I don't even bother trying to go online while I'm at home - it's completely useless.

There are other ways to uninstall things than the uninstall application, but I guess it's too late now.

upon reading the title, I had a sudden moment of forgetting everything I knew about computers and thought this was about a man named Norton, and immediately I thought
"yea, fuck that guy!"

Norton is an awful product. Sometimes it won't even let you uninstall it from your computer without a Norton user account and internet connection.
I've seen people whose computers were running extremely slow with an internet connection that kept on crapping out -- only to have all of those problems disappear entirely when removing Norton.

Yeah it is horrible virus protection software that seems to cause more problems, one of the few things i bought for the computer that I regret.

Such is why I upgraded to 2009 when I had 2008, it automatically updates the signatures, and will retry after failing to uninstall.
Plus it has customisable backgrounds :3

Honestly, it's one of the worst antiviruses out there. Not to mention it costs as much as the good ones.
The user interface sucks. Once your 'subscription' runs out, you can't run full system scans (only retarded little quick scans) and it chooses to notify you about 3 different things every time you turn your computer on (subscription, spyware definitions, virus definitions) in three different windows.
AVG was the best one I ever used on my old computer, Norton came on my new comp but I can't wait to get rid of it.

I don't even want to begin listing all of the frustrations I had with Norton Systemworks 2004. It came with the computer I bought back in '03. Basically this 'computer solution' from Symantec caused more problems than it solved.
Until recently I made a point to staying clear of anything Norton. What changed now? I decided to give the Norton 2009 version a trial run. So I installed it and to my surprise it actually was much faster. I didn't notice any slowdown in start-up, everything ran just fine. I never thought there would be a day where I actually compliment a Norton product instead of bashing one.

The same works for AOL. The person that had my computer before me put AOL shit all in my computer. The only way I can get rid of it is downloading MORE AOL stuff and running the uninstaller, which, in turn, puts EVEN MORE AOL stuff on my computer.
It's a never ending cycle. Fuck you, AOL. Fuck you.

Norton is retarded.
I hate these antivirus programs that close you out of whatever programs you have open and ask you if you want to update every 30 seconds. Gah!
Some fear death, others pray for it...
