I used to spend hours a day in Cubase. Then I started to spend less and less time, and in the past week I've opened the program only twice. I just feel like I would rather be playing video games or doing something else.
But I don't want to completely lose interest in it, because I'm getting a lot better. The things I've made recently have been a huge step up from the stuff I was capable of just a month ago. I don't want to give up on it after 2 and 1/2 years.
My main question is what do the rest of you do when you start to get bored of making music?

I close the program and go do something else.
if you aren't enjoying making music, what you are doing is making yourself sit down and stare at the screen thinking "i have to make a song"
if you aren't feeling it, save the file, close the fucking computer screen, turn it off, and go do what you would rather be doing. then come back later. if you still feel like shit, go do something else again.
never force yourself to make music or you have already lost. what do you do instead. leave and come back later lol

Hmmmmmm ok.
I guess I shouldn't force myself....
Plus its not really a writers block, more of the opposite lol, Im at my most musically creative point, but I don't feel like making songs....
But yeah, I guess I'll try not using the program for a while. Thanks for the response.

lol it isn't about leaving your computer only to come back later and have the same thought proccesses
you need to adopt s complete music production change. whenever you are feeling not like making music. leave. come back later.
it may be hard. you may think "but i gotta finish this and upload it to my website!" or "if i leave now i wont be able to get these awesome ideas out of my head into the song"
bullshit.
when i started saving and leaving mid song, a funny thing happened. i never needed to do it anymore. but you have to do it the first few times. if you cant bring yourself to close, take control of the individual proccesses.
"im moving my mouse to the file button. alright, move down, select save, alrighty, move mouse to x, alrighty, close button, move mouse to start menu, alright, select shut down, alright. flex leg muscles, get out of chair. check. walk out of house. check., keep waking, check. avoid tree. check. i see ocean. alrighty, turn around. alrighty. keep walking. lright i see ocean again. turn around. keep walking...etc."

Yeah but If I force myself not to use the program for a while, will I eventually regain interest in it?
Wouldn't I just forget about it after I while?

You'll never lose interest permanently. Never. Seriously, all these threads that are like this, the author's out of the block/lack of inspiration stage in a week or two. If you force yourself, it's going to become a job moreso than a fun expression, and by putting pressure on yourself to finish tracks its going to make it even harder for you to regain interest.
If your work isn't worth fighting for, it's not worth uploading on NG, period. (JrHager84)

If I'm bored of my music but I still feel like writing (which really happens a lot), I usually try something really crazy and different. Some experimental stuff. Or I try to writing in a completely different genre then I'm used to writing.
See normally I write rock/metal stuff, but recently I've been messing around with electronica. Now some of my newer rock has a strong techno influence that my older stuff doesn't. Creating new sounds keeps me from getting bored with it.

I hardly ever make music when I'm at home. I'd much rather be out drinking, chilling, partying, etc. etc.
I spend time at college making demos, unfinished stuff, but when I do occasionally feel like making a song, it has my all go into it.
Also, if you find a social side to music, that's a lot of fun too. It's more fun jamming some ideas and tunes with your mates than sitting by yourself trying to do stuff.

If you can't write music at a particular time, just don't write music. Come back to it another day; don't fret it.

Sometimes I just feel like playing around with a program when I come up with something, and other times I try and nothing good comes out of it. I completely understand the frustration you're talking about; I've had it before as well.
I've never hated making music, though, it's just that sometimes it doesn't seem to work and I can't get the creative process going.
Honestly, the best advice I can give (which is what most people are saying) is to just leave it for a while. You don't necessarily have to go back and try again later. You might benefit from simply waiting for inspiration to arise. I get sad sometimes when I haven't been able to write music for a while, but it feels so great when I haven't touched FL for weeks and all of a sudden I get a great idea.
I let my inspiration control me rather than trying to control my inspiration.

Hell - I go through dry spells of months without submitting anything. I might work on a few things, but get fed up with them... but I try not submit stuff till its ready. Try not to force music, or else it comes off as a repetitive piece of garbage with no creativity. [/cynicism]
You will lol, and you will like it.

If the feel for the creation of something drifts away, it' a part of life. Whether it be music, or writing or anything, if you just get bored with it, not much you can do.
The reason I don't have any submissions is because I hope to get reeeeeeeeeeealy good, and then submit some of my stuff. Then people will be like "OLY CRAP DIS GUY IS EPIC!", or at least I hope.
Also I want to create another account with a less gay user name...

you won't get to your best without input and suggestions from other musicians, you should post regardless or you won't be learning what does or doesn't work along with the mass of tips you can get from others

Not worthwhile. I have nothing on this account, so I'll just start another one.

Well, if you get bored and need inspiration, I guess you can do what I do. Go to a keyboard or a piano roll, and punch in random notes. 5 good random notes tend to do the trick for me. And then take those notes, and make it a challenge to yourself to make the best song you can from that. That's what I did for Journey, and see how that turned out! :D
